If you have a smartphone, even a low spec one, you should be able to download the Android TV remote or Nvidia Shield TV apps. You can use the keyboard on a phone then.

a simple search leads me to believe that is not an issue nor the question at hand.

Just for clarification, I bought this one from Amazon about 6 months ago. Not sure if the model has changed at all, but as I said, it was simple plug and play (connect via bluetooth) for me.
