Hi there!

Is the intended app. Be aware that there are issues with it on ipads. Also, the default patrol logic is really bad. This app is basically good for spamming the droid’s emotes and a bit of Star Wars related fun. Once you have played around with that app a bit, I would recommend you migrate over to this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sphero.sprk
The Sphero Edu ap is far superior in practically every way. It lacks the Star Wars themed wrapping of the other ap but it controls the heading and speed in a far more intuitive way. More importantly: it lets you get to programming the droid. I was REALLY dismayed at how bad the default patrol function was. My BB9E just kept running into the wall and staying there. Despite no programming history, I managed to create a program in a matter of minutes that has my droid zipping around with tailor-made parameters. Again, I can not stressed how bummed I was by my droid until I got the second ap. It really unlocked its full potential.
Update:
The random charger that I bought from Amazon seems to be working. The battery is charging but it seems to be pretty slow at charging it. I left it charging overnight and it is still not full.
The current specification for the charger: 3.5mm 15V/1A barrel jack charger.

Check the images on the amazon page to see the exact sizing information and polarity of the tip.

Alright. I tried my third Android I have, which has Android 4.0.4 OS version https://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s_duos_s7562-4883.php
I've had same initial experience with pairing. But, when I opened suggested app it managed to connect and I had my first go on it.
I went back to my latest Android. And now I see that it actually alternate between "Connecting" and "FailedConnect".
In conclusion, it is paired, but not connected until an app tries to connect. For some reason my main Android can't do it properly =\
On android (Pixel 3), i was able to sideload the app after downloading it from: https://apkpure.com/sphero/orbotix.sphero
Other than that, i have read about using arduino with bluetooth modules, but i do not have time for that.
You might be in a strange state where the EDU app can't update the firmware. Give this APK of the old Sphero app a try, it was designed to work with that bot: https://apkpure.com/sphero/orbotix.sphero
I see, you need automatic motor control to keep the mass down, but also want no motor control to have the Bolt run freely downwards. If you have a spare Android phone, try building a sphere around it and record sensor data with Science Journal: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cc.arduino.sciencejournal
Post videos here :)
You can try this app:
