This stuff works wonders and is completely organic. I apply it liberally 1-2x a week depending on green worm activity.

Well, I have friends and neighbors who offered for free (kids free...and I want to make clear, I love kids, but this is not parents with kids. This is grandparents with kids...sometimes grandparents can be a little more liberal in their dealings with kids). But it's too late now. They'd be super offended if my family friend didn't do it. They already know im crazy about my plants. So they'd assume I found someone I thought could do better, which would be true lol.
Also, in regards to your situation. I just bought these self watering stakes. The small ones only give like 2.5oz a day but they sell xL. Also, Amazon sells these stakes without the reservoir, and instead you use a wine bottle upside down. I can't say how well the first link works...haven't used it yet, but the 2nd link I listed uses about 1/4 of a wine bottle a day.
Also, I've read about taking a milkjug. Putting a hold in the bottom. Keep cap on milk jug. Add rocks to the bottom of jug if you're worried about wind. Then place the filled up milk jug directly on the soil. The theory is that the water will solely drip out of the milk jug.
Like I said, I can't vouch for how any of these work.
DE will take care of them. You’ll have to reapply if it gets wet / moist. I laced ours with sugar so they would take it back to the nest. On top of that (we had black ants everywhere when we moved in but formerly TX resident) if you have birds that frequent your yard sprinkle some seed along with the DE. It’s harmless to animals if you get the food grade kind and the birds ate up the ants.
Takes about 24 hours for the first kill. I can still remember my first encounter with the little fire fu$&kers as I was talking to a friend on the phone while I enjoyed a nice cool 90 degree Texas night and they attacked the hell out of my legs.
Also turned our leaf blower into a giant DE spreader for the back yard after the grass browned off and ticks were partying (away from the garden and flowers) Load up and go!
FYI DE is harmful to insects that have exoskeletons like ants but also bees so “bee” selective where you place it. Some DE comes with a puffer (turkey baster works) you load up and squeeze to spread it- maybe shoot directly into their “Castle of Stupid”
~ “Castle of Stupid” that is so brilliant OP. I can think of a giant house that could be renamed that.
In "All New Square Foot Gardening" Mel Bartholomew has a section that talks about how much to grow. Link to book on Amazon
One 16 sq box will give you a salad a day for one adult. A second box would provide a dinner a day for an adult. A third box would then be extras for giving away or preserving. It would all depend on what you put in each box. For my family of three i would theoretically require 9 boxes that are 16 sq.
I'm doing planning for next years beds and i think for my family i would realistically need at least Two 16sq boxes of just tomatoes but my growing season is very different from yours. We also wouldn't eat a salad a day but i may do the salad bed and share extras with friends and neighbors.
I use this tapeto scare them off, worked well so far! All my seeds sprouted and haven't seen signs of birds or other critters in my beds. I have it loosely stapled to the sides so it can flap around in the breeze. Strong winds can rip it since I'm creating a hole/tear with the staples, but there's plenty in the roll I just replace as needed. I also use it on my kids playset to keep the birds from building nests and crapping all over it.
I use this
Probably an easier way to make one but I was lazy as I needed to get stuff in the ground ASAP. I don’t use anything else besides this.
Don’t need to. When I planted I used a Seeding Square and just moved it like stamp as I planted. Where I planted seedlings I marked it then planted the seedling. Otherwise I poked a hole and inserted seed of choice.

Ooh, chickens! We’re not allowed to have them in my town but I do love the idea.
So far, at least, I recommend these! They were easy to install and seem quite sturdy.
Here's the two I use a lot:
Sunset Western Garden Book: Comprehensive Western Plant Encyclopedia (I think there's also a newer edition out)
and
The Color Dictionary of Flowers and Plants for Home and Garden, George Kalmbacher
(I have no Amazon affiliation!)
Maybe look for bulk suppliers of vermiculite or ask a local nursery if you haven't already. If you get it in small amounts from Home Depot or Lowes, you're going to pay. But I was able to get Palmetto for less than listed on amazon through a small nearby place who carried it.
Loads of info online for container gardening both indoors and out. This Amazon book is a good beginners guide with some good ideas for growing veggies in containers.
