Honey, NO. NEVER LEAVE A TEGU UNATTENDED OUTSIDE. Or in a bathtub for that matter. These guys are lightning fast and WILL disappear.
I don’t want to be that person but you’ve just destroyed any trust you had built. This lizard is going to hate you for a while. He wasn’t a “little frightened”, he was still terrified. Reptiles get a build up of lactic acid and if under enough stress it can be fatal. The classic sign of lactic build up is lethargy; the tegu wasn’t aggressive because of a massive lactic build up, he just didn’t have it in him anymore. Plus he was half drowned.
Take him to the vet.
As for outdoor adventures, build the trust first. You can get a cheap UVB light from petco. Build trust inside, get him used to a harness, then go outside. And if he must go outside do so in a confined area he can’t get out of. We have a playpen like this for our boys, it’s plastic walled so they can’t climb out. You’re going to need extra zip ties with it and don’t use the connectors on the bottom, it creates a gap they can nose under. Use the zip ties instead.
In the mean time, get him to the vet.
We've found dog-puzzle toys to be lots of fun for a way to do feeding. Specifically, we fill this with blueberries:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08LZN28L8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
We got this pen from amazon and it’s great so far! I got a few cheap fitted sheets to line it and make sure they can’t burrow under. The pool is a $6 lasagna pan from Walmart with a small aquarium heater. The pool is perfect and Merlin LOVES it! G’utagnan had a soak and his newest she’d (6” in 2 months!) is coming right off. The key rig box has a heating pad in it and they pretty content in there. All I need to do now is figure out a basking light.
It’s wonderful because we love having them out, but it’s hard to have them out at the same time and want to keep them acclimated to each other. Plus they’re too small to free roam wherever they like. There’s plenty of panels to expand the size and we can easily break it down and put it away (one corner of left untied). We can hang out out with them, or just let them chill.
And when the weather heats up we can go to the park for picnics and not have to worry so much. Leashes are great, but they’re tiny and this is pretty great peace of mind!
It's this one...I cut off that suction cup part so I could just hang it with a carabiner - it came with a ball too but the ball is a little small, I didnt want to risk a choking hazard so I gave that to my cats =P
It's this one. Looks like it's changed slightly from when I bought it though
This dog collar works, but it's not perfect:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072HHFK87/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
My tegu can slip the collar sometimes if I leave him leashed to something while I work in the yard. But walking him is not a problem with this leash. It's when I'm not paying direct attention to him and he decides his leash range isn't enough and tries backing out of the harness he will sometimes slip out of it.

That’s fine! He doesn’t need to be awake, he just needs to be around you.
Eventually the boys outgrew the tub and we bought a playpen like this one. We got the 24 panel one. It’s great and we still use it; I’ll set it up all around the railing when it’s nice out so the boys can hang out on the porch. (The railing is already netted to keeps the cats in, but the boys can get caught in the net.
The playpen is freaking awesome, but the clips aren’t the greatest, so we use ones like these. You can get them cheaper at Walmart.
That's not a mistking this is down below
Foggers and humidifiers can be bad for reptiles
Same thing he eats now only ground up to baby food. Get a hand meat grinder.
We did turkey, calf liver, chicken hearts, scrambled eggs. Quail eggs ( cracked no shell- just the yolk and white) fish , plus fruits like blueberries and blackberries and veggies like kale and collards etc. ALWAYS RAW except scrambled eggs. And those should only be occasionally fed. Quail eggs are better for them but there is a current shortage. I was personally so scared to give him pinky mice when he was tiny because I was scared he would choke, but I'm a helicopter mom with my tegus. He gets baby mice now. You are welcome to chop up mice too if you like. Too weird for me.
They can eat what adults eat, they just need it mashed to a nasty paste. I used a hand meat grinder like this. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B088FBJ55P/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_JBC2GH73VSATP41ZTJDN?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
It's gross and messy but my baby ate like a champ and never had blockage issues. He's about 5 months now and he can now eat food from a food processor. ( small chunks) rather than Pureed. The link above is easy to take apart and clean , bit def clean it right away. I let it sit a couple times in a hurry and it was gag nasty.
Yeah you definitely want toys that are easy to clean or treats that don't leave much residue. The turkey and dried fish skins are good for in the ball.
https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07X2MD461/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_RVX160WHYSDTABN8ZR32 smth like this. Just make sure there is no way for your tegu to reach it. My torts cant really climb so it is not an issue with them.
You can find all sorts of log hides online in all sorts of sizes. Heres one I found that looks to be the right size for a gecko :D
Oh I'm sure it helps with the humidity with some splashing around. The downside is my girl likes to put her face into the waterfall sometimes and it lets water splash around everywhere, half emptying the tub and getting everything soaked. It's not perfect, but it really seems to add some interaction that she loves!

Here's the one I ended up using if you're curious:
Sorry, I missed your comment earlier. Here's his favorite. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JN9N8XU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00TBOT42Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_97hVFb4CRGZBR?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 I use these and they're much nicer. The wheels have real bearings and the grip is foam so it would be way more comfy for your gu.
Ha no problem. I use two of these 140mm AC Infinity fans inside the enclosure hanging just an inch or so from the ceiling (one on each side), they create a gentle air flow on the top half. They are set on high and are on the same outlet/timer as the lights. I just used some twisty tie that I have a giant roll of and a ceiling hook to hang em. And I have one single 80mm one mounted on the outside on one of the vents that I turn on low as needed when I have condensation issues (I'm not using it during the winter because it gets so dry but it worked great in the summer). I really like those fans since they are easily mounted anywhere and have 3 speed settings.
The light fixtures I got from LightYourReptiles - I absolutely love this store and unfortunately as you can see it's closed at the moment but should open again soon. The owner can make recommendations if you email him. He's great.
I strongly recommend at a minimum two tech items:
Those are the two I consider pretty essential in my setup
Other options:
So there are actually two components here: the sensor component with power shut-off and the actual humidifier component. The sensor component I'm using is the WILLHI WH1436H Mini Plug-n-play Digital Air Humidity Controller with probe from amazon - that's the important part. It lets me set a 'start' range and a 'stop' range. So it goes 'on' whenever the humidity drops below 60% and stops when it hits 75%. I had to calibrate it a fair bit because I've got the sensor on top of the tank rather than IN the tank (so readings of 50-65% actually match tank readings of 60-75% I've found) but after some fiddling it's worked like an absolute charm.

This works with any humidifier, which is great because those components break more - but the part I'm using for that is Evergreen Pet Supplies Reptile Humidifier/Reptile Fogger - 2 Liter Tank also from Amazon.

gnat explosions are normal/ common as a part of enclosure cycling when you first set it up. I put up sticky fly traps and hung them around my guys setup (and inside since it was large enough but you wont be able to do that). .. This style of gnat trap has also done wonders for me. Dont buy the specialty replacement glue boards though, just buy a bunch of normal fly trap sheets and cut them to size (way cheaper)
Reptilinks are great... I use them as a staple and then offer fish and other fruits along side them. For calcium Repashy SuperCal has worked great for me.
