Someone else mentioned Graham Chapman's funeral and John Cleese's eulogy. Here's a quotation from it that I particularly like:
> Well, I feel that I should say, "Nonsense. Good riddance to him, the freeloading bastard! I hope he fries. "
> And the reason I think I should say this is, he would never forgive me if I didn't, if I threw away this opportunity to shock you all on his behalf. Anything for him but mindless good taste. I could hear him whispering in my ear last night as I was writing this:
> "Alright, Cleese, you're very proud of being the first person to ever say 'shit' on television. If this service is really for me, just for starters, I want you to be the first person ever at a British memorial service to say 'fuck'!"
> You see, the trouble is, I can't. If he were here with me now I would probably have the courage, because he always emboldened me. But the truth is, I lack his balls, his splendid defiance. And so I'll have to content myself instead with saying 'Betty Marsden...'

It has been suggested that when gambling first originated, it was associated with predicting the future/fate and divinity:
>The origin of gambling is considered to be divinatory: by casting marked sticks and other objects and interpreting the outcome, man sought knowledge of the future and the intentions of the gods. From this it was a very short step to betting on the outcome of the throws. The Bible contains many references to the casting of lots to divide property.
>However, in ancient times casting lots was not considered to be gambling in the modern sense but instead was connected with inevitable destiny, or fate. Anthropologists have also pointed to the fact that gambling is more prevalent in societies where there is a widespread belief in gods and spirits whose benevolence may be sought.

Japan's history is really fucking cool, it really feels like it's out of a fantasy novel at times. One example is how the term kamikaze was coined. Most people recognize it in the context of suicide bombing, but the term itself just means 'divine wind'.
The year is 1274. At this point the Mongol Empire (established by Genghis Khan) controls a large portion of Asia (as well as parts of Europe and the Middle East). However at this point his grandson, Kublai Khan, is in power. He decides it's about time Japan is conquered by the Mongols. He gathers a force of about 40,000 troops and sails toward the island country. Once anchored in a Japanese bay (Hakata Bay), one-third of the fleet gets wiped out by a typhoon and the rest of the fleet flees.
Seven years later Kublai Khan tries again, this time with two separate forces containing about 140,000 troops. The forces meet in Hakata Bay and incredibly are once again hit by a massive typhoon. Over half the Mongol force was killed by this storm and the survivors were wiped out by Japanese forces. The Japanese most likely would have been defeated by the Mongols if it weren't for the typhoons since they would have been vastly outnumbered in both instances. It's no surprise this was seen as an act of divine intervention.
Honestly if that interested you at all I highly recommend reading up on Japanese history; it's fascinating.
TL;DR: The term 'kamikaze' was coined after two large Mongol invasions of Japan were thwarted by typhoons.

The Latin word for left is "Sinistra", which is also the root word for Sinister. Thus, left handed people have historically been considered unlucky or evil. The same is true in Sanskrit, as the same word means both "left" and "evil".
Additionally, in many third world countries, the use of the left hand is considered unclean due to the hand's practical uses in lieu of toilet paper and it is considered extremely foul and inappropriate to use one's left hand for eating or greeting someone.
Also, in many cultures, left handed people have historically been linked with witchcraft and Satan.

The darknet has two sides, and people seem to mainly talk about one. The illegal markets (/r/DarkNetMarkets) have made headlines, and child porn is a real problem there; these both make the news a lot so everyone is very aware of this side. I believe both of these are very real problems that need addressing, and I'm sure there's more of this side that I just don't know about. But I want to talk about what less people seem to talk about - how people like journalists use Tor, or how people in oppressed countries like China can access information their government would rather block, or how people like Chelsea Manning use it to protect themselves, or how military personal have used it to protect themselves on the battlefield, hell it can be how you can talk to someone without the NSA knowing you sent it...I think these are hugely important things. Much like how when you give people people pseudonymity on the the regular internet by letting people hide behind usernames some will do bad things, it's just a reflection of the people using it. The internet isn't bad because people do bad things on it, and neither is the darknet. It's a tool, used for both bad and good. The difference here is if used correctly, it can offer arguably absolute anonymity. You can access the darknet using Tor, a special web browser configured to hide your IP address. Here's a page on their website about who uses it and why. This is also a really interesting talk on how darknet users have been caught out if that sounds interesting to you.

Many languages, particularly Asian ones, do not have any conjugation of words. For example, in Indonesian, plural forms can sometimes be created by repeating the noun, so 'child' is 'anak' and 'children' is 'anak anak'. In Thai grammar, they use often modifier words to indicate past or future tense, so instead of "I ate" they might say "Phom gin laew" which basically translates to "I eat already".
Cambyses II of Persia used cats to fight a battle.
He was fighting the Egyptians in the battle of Pelusium in 525 B.C. and as we all know, the cat held a high place in Egyptian society as sacred creatures and the Achaemenid Empire sought to use this to their advantage in the invasion of Egypt.Cambyses ordered his men to paint felines on their shields, and he brought hundreds of actual cats into his front lines. The plan worked: The Egyptian archers refused to fire on his felines, fearing that they would injure the animals—a crime punishable by death. Instead they retreated, and most were massacred by the pursuing Persians. This ultimately led to the capture of the pharaoh.
The famous Irish playwright Oscar Wilde has a little-known writing named "The Soul of Man Under Socialism", which is considered to be an incredibly important writing in the history of libertarian socialism, which anarchism is a form of. Weird connection but follow me on this one. Crayola was created by Edwin Binney and Harold Smith. Binney had a daughter named Dorothy who married a man named George Putnam.

Putnam decided to manage a young up-and-coming female pilot named Amelia Earhart, but the two fell in love so Putnam eventually divorced the Crayola heiress to marry the aviation pioneer.

In the 17th Century, the tapestry of small, autonomous principalities in what is today Germany was torn apart by the Thirty Years' War, a struggle between France and the House of Hapsburg, a dynastic family which was royalty in Germany, England, Russia, Spain, Portugal, Hungary, Ireland, Mexico, etc. It was one of the deadliest per capita wars in history, and estimates put the death toll between 25 and 40% of the entire population of Germany.
A series of treaties called the Peace of Westphalia ended the war in 1648. The treaties famously laid the philosophical and legal groundwork for the modern concept of a world made up of co-existing sovereign nations, and is one of the most important events of the Early Modern Period-- the centuries of change which connect the Middle Ages and Renaissance with the Industrial and Modern Eras.

"The oldest archaeological evidence of the Celts comes from Hallstatt, Austria, near Salzburg. Excavated graves of chieftains there, dating from about 700 bce, exhibit an Iron Age culture (one of the first in Europe) which received in Greek trade such luxury items as bronze and pottery vessels. It would appear that these wealthy Celts, based from Bavaria to Bohemia, controlled trade routes along the river systems of the Rhône, Seine, Rhine, and Danube and were the predominant and unifying element among the Celts. In their westward movement the Hallstatt warriors overran Celtic peoples of their own kind, incidentally introducing the use of iron, one of the reasons for their own overlordship."

Sound can have various different envelopes that can change the timbre (sound quality/tone color) of the sound. It consists of an attack, decay, sustain, and release.
In terms of musical instruments, instruments that generate a large attack, large decay, little sustain, and quick release are percussion instruments and plucked acoustical string instruments (snare drum, pizzicato strings, harpsichord).
Instruments that generate a moderate attack, small decay, long sustain, and full release are more wind instruments (clarinet, flute, oboe, trumpet, voice, etc.).
Instruments with a large attack, moderate decay, moderate sustain and long decay would be a piano (or an amplified electric guitar/bass).

Although U.S. laws do not specifically prohibit hiring one's relatives, studies show that between 10 and 40 percent of U.S. companies maintain formal policies prohibiting such a practice. Many of these anti-nepotism rules were instituted in the 1950s with the aim of preventing the hiring of incompetent male relatives of male employees. In the 1960s and 1970s the same rules applied but failed to reflect the change in the workforce as more women entered the job market; females were often the victims of these rules, however, and many were forced to quit.

The granddaddy of capitalism is Adam Smith, a Scottish philosopher who essentially invented economics with his 1776 book The Wealth of Nations. In this book, Smith argues that the various self-interests of every individual, when viewed as a system rather than individual parts, reveals a self-correcting, self-perpetuating, self-improving system where each village and city will tend to have just the right number of blacksmiths, coopers, doctors, etc. based on the demand for each profession, who, on average, will tend to offer their services at precisely the most acceptable price. These trends are driven by the market for their profession. This is sometimes called the "invisible hand" of the market.
Smith's thesis can be summed up as follows: "It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker, that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest. We address ourselves, not to their humanity but to their self-love, and never talk to them of our own necessities but of their advantages."

The historical lineage of the group Russia is named for, the Rus, is very much in debate. Northern European scholars in the 18th C. argued that the Rus were an offshoot of the Vikings, based mostly on philology and linguistics. However, Russian scholars and others contest this hypothesis, and claim that the Rus were a Slavic tribe which predated the Baltic Viking presence.

A lot of people have the false impression Walt Disney animated all of his films himself by his own hand. He was an animator in the early days when he formed Silly Symphonies but as the company grew, he did less animation work and by the time they started work on Snow White, Walt had given up on drawing altogether and nothing drawn by his own hand ever made it to screen afterwards. The only time Walt ever exercised his drawing skills was when he was in production meetings working on story boards and layouts, where he would point out changes and corrections he wanted made.
There are several biographies that cover this extensively, but I think the best would be Disney Animation The Illusion of Life written by Disney's Nine Old Men of animation.
