You're not a failure. Please don't give up.
This book contains questions very similar to the VTNE's. I'd recommend buying the paperback version and doing a few questions from it every night. Find the correct answers, then use your textbooks to look up the incorrect choices so you know why they're incorrect. It's a very painstaking way to study but it definitely helped my score.
When I first decided to make them, I used some vials with cork stoppers (like this one) that I had leftover from a different project. I really like them, but the vials are bigger than they look in the picture and can fit more fur than I anticipated.
Currently I am using;
Vaccine vials (just washed out with soap and water).
These buttons (for the top, in place of a cork etc)
These tags (there are so many cute mini tags on Amazon!)
And the charms I get from various places- Amazon has a good selection of low priced, bulk, dog and cat themed charms, but if I see some at a craft store or even Walmart I like I’ll snag some. I’m always looking for cute charms for my angels.
I recommend getting yourself some textbooks off of amazon and reading up on animal handling, behavior, and restraint. That will make you much more useful once you can start volunteering after you get your drivers license. I’ll link a couple to get you started.

I agree with you. I used to make comments about chihuahuas too, then I read this article.
https://www.huffpost.com/entry/the-truth-about-chihuahua_b_8217314
Sorry, I don't know how to format it pretty for reddit, but the truth is chihuahuas do get passed up and do die in shelters because of stereotypes about their breed.
As a community, we would collectively lose our shit if people came in here talking about pits the way some people here talk about chihuahuas. I feel the same way about both breeds. They can be great dogs, and they deserve better than their negative stereotypes.
At least here in Oregon I have seen this type collar mentioned above at petco if that helps! Or Amazon has one :) CollarDirect Leather Cat Collar, Cat Safety Collar with Elastic Strap https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071QWHNPY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_DeHCAbD74YQAG
I don't know if any clinics allow the ones pictured here, but you CAN get completely enclosed Crocs. I have some - like these. Ugly as heck, but I wear them for necropsies (large animals) and other things that might be particularly messy/disgusting, and for international work where I might be exposed to something I don't want to bring back to the US. A quick toss in some disinfectant and they are clean as can be.
I don't wear them on a daily basis like some people do, though.
I just recently bought this beauty after my last vet trip.
I thought my hard plastic carrier was good. It has those circle locks on the side so it's easier to take the top off, right? Eff that. My cat is too big for it. I had to tip it up and drop him down in it. Then they could barely get him out at the vet. I had brought dishonor to my profession.
I actually showed this carrier off to my co-workers. It's like the Cadillac of carriers. It's big enough for my cat to be comfortable. It's soft sided so easy to maneuver, but still has enough rigidity to not collapse on itself like most soft carriers. I like that it has a shoulder strap and arm strap. And obviously more zippers than a pair of Hot Topic pants! Whatever side you want, just unzip it and go.
I would totally be a sales person for these carriers. But let's be serious, these babies sell themselves.
Spray on a towel or blanket, let it air for a min, then put it in the carrier. And/or, on a towel or blanket over the carrier. And going together may help as well.
They are available on amazon too I've seen some crazy cat restraint concepts but this just seems wrong on so many levels. Owners that want something like this need to be educated about healthy scratching behavior outlets.
I'd like to suggest an online course to you that I found incredibly helpful & informative of how to learn things. It's called "Learning How to Learn," & it's free on Coursera. There may be something in there that can help you master your anatomy course even if you have a poor instructor.
As far as feeling disheartened, if you want to do this, you will figure out a way to do it. I'm sure it sucks to be waiting around extra time for one class, but think of it as an opportunity to prepare yourself for it next time around. Study your textbook, pursue independent education (there's another Coursera course called EDIVET that I found quite informative) that you can use for the anatomy course, or just in general in the vet tech program. Focus on your own learning, further your knowledge of things you enjoy to recharge your interest & passion in being a vet tech. :)
It is like 280 bucks for the new version on Amazon, but here is a link to abebooks, which sells the previous addition for 5 dollars. =P
I inherited mine from my work. I have both editions thanks to asking my fellow technicians if I could borrow them!
Yes, the clips attach to the pads. these are my favorite. and I bet they’re small enough for cats!
link to paw print charms link to vials
Here are the links to the supplies from when I made these! 😇 keep on making the end of life process easier for clients!
I only very recently heard of the term "veterinary technologist." I just checked on this site and it's really weird how only one state gives a separate term to people who get an additional 2 years of school. I feel like vet med has to make things confusing for no reason sometimes.
I’d personally just hand that lady a copy of this book along with her dog when she comes to pick up. 🤦🏻♀️
Karen Becker SPECIFICALLY says that you can’t and shouldn’t do what this lady is doing.
This carrier has changed our lives with our cats! Pet Gear Carrier & Car Seat for Cats and Dogs https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VFFBPBF/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_735HZ5VGFJJYPMMGKA0M?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
We spent years fighting carriers that were just awful and after our usually chill girl lost her mind heading to the vet, I decided enough was enough! We actually leave these out in the house open at all times and they will jump in them and nap.
These are the buttons I use. Honestly, I think any kind with the “button loop” on the back would work though if you prefer something different. Basically I just use a craft type super glue, add a couple of drops on the back around the loop, and stick it on! They fit perfectly, and I was relieved when I ordered them because I didn’t know what else to use since I couldn’t find corks to fit them. I’ve been using those for a couple months now, but I definitely want to experiment with other ones as well. I hope this helps!
The fact that you’re getting an A despite struggling shows you have the dedication to make it through school. I found A&P difficult because it’s just so much to memorize. I got the veterinary anatomy coloring book, copied the pages, and put them in clear plastic sleeves and then repeatedly labeled the parts with dry erase marker.
One thing that I’ve found, 6 years after graduating, is that it’s important to keep reviewing to keep my memory fresh. But also keep in mind that when you’re in practice, if you forget something you can always look it up or ask a colleague. We’re constantly learning in this profession and there’s no shame in that!

Look for pinch/dash/smidgen measuring spoons, like this one https://www.amazon.com/Pinch-Dash-Smidgen-Measuring-Spoons/dp/B000E8OPVS
A "pinch" is 1/16 tsp - although frequently they don't say that on the packaging.
Amazon, or other online store, is usually the easiest place to get them, although I have seen them at Bed Bath and Beyond and Walmart. I got mine from Walmart, but when I wanted a second set and went back they didn't have them, so not sure if it was just my store, or if they stopped selling them, or what. Bed Bath and Beyond depends on your local market and what they decide to carry there.
Before I had that, I used half of a 1/8 tsp spoon, which I had from Walmart. It was close enough for Miralax, which doesn't have to be super-precise.
I just got some good pet nail clippers on Amazon. Here's the link:
Safari Professional Stainless Steel Nail Trimmer, Standard https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002RJM8C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_DLfuyb0KR2RNH
They look like they come in different sizes too, so whether you have a cat or a dog you should be good to go
My textbook, Anesthesia for Veterinary Technicians by Bryant is pretty straightforward and informative. I'd rather learn from a textbook / teacher than the shortcut version from someone in the field who is used to doing things the quick (and not always correct) way. You can find it on Amazon for about $30 used, or $60 new. Here's the link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0813805864/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I personally love my littmann light weight. Comfy on my ears and you can hear everything just fine. Plus 40$ on amazon and comes in a bunch of colors is nice. Had it since 2015 at this point. I got a little clock attachment with the seconds hand on it and people love to steal it since our ICU room does not have a clock so if you don't have a watch your SOL. Plus its LIGHT WEIGHT who needs neck problems, not me.
https://www.amazon.com/JYHY-Muzzles-Adjustable-Breathable-Training/dp/B07FBDFJ95 we've used ones like these. They always look like aliens.
We just bought this and we love it! Maybe he will feel better if it's one of these cat "muzzles"?
There's a book on Amazon that focuses on veterinary cardiology! It's amaaazing. The images are so clear and nicely labeled, it's well organized and it has a ton of test prep questions for when you're studying for the VTNE. Plus it's not wildly expensive like most textbooks. Can't recommend enough
I also wear knee pads under my scrubs. These are very comfortable, easy to slip on/off, and safe to throw in the wash/dryer. Some of my coworkers were surprised when I mentioned wearing knee pads, so they're low-profile. It also helps to not wear skin tight scrub pants to keep them discrete! That said, please do not be ashamed of wanting to keep your joints healthy and pain-free.
A few girls wear these on their dominate knee , under scrub
For the VTNE the only study tool I used was the VetTechPrep app and it was SO so helpful. Well worth the money. Felt like playing a game on my phone instead of trying to make my way through a prep book.
For anatomy, I got this coloring book:
It was a fun way to study and I could do it while watching tv or whatever.
Otherwise…flash cards for sure. Also for prasitology I basically re-wrote my textbook in a notebook. Devoted a page to every species and wrote out all the details I needed to memorize for tests. Writing it out by hand helped with memorization.
Also Quizlet has a ton of vet tech quizzes and flash cards and it has an app! I could tell some of them were based on my school’s classes or textbooks because they matched my material exactly.
I don’t have any specific site, but depending on what topic you’re currently on, I may be able to provide resources/links. One of the textbooks I used a lot in school (for myself and while tutoring) is An Illustrated Guide to Veterinary Medical Terminology. It explains the basics incredibly well (not necessarily A&P specific though, but does go into some anatomy)
get Purina Cat Chow Gentle
It won't break the bank and most cats do really well on it
They make empty capsules in different sizes
Seconding the puzzle feeder. My cat isn't obese, but I got her one to *prevent* her becoming obese when her diet changed and also because she's the best kitty and I thought she'd have fun with it. She LOVES it :)
Sophia Yin has a great book on behavior and restraint (it was part of my tech school curriculum); it’s a bit pricey, but definitely worth it, especially if you can find it used. https://www.amazon.com/Stress-Handling-Restraint-Behavior-Modification/dp/0964151847/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?crid=HA5RXSVR380&keywords=sophia+yin&qid=1657709785&sprefix=sophia+yin%2Caps%2C140&sr=8-5
We use some similar to these. I wouldn't recommend these personally based on the reviews but this is more or less what our cat gloves look like, but ours they can't bite through enough to break skin.
Yeah, absolutely. If you're serious about the paying part, I have most of my notes from anatomy, parasitology and I believe microbiology (my favorite subjects, clearly). PM me for more info.
Also, I tutored prospective RVTs for just under 4 years, so I can help with that as well. When COVID hit, I wasn't able to tutor folks as much anymore, so I wrote a VTNE prep book instead that's basically like a bunch of my tutoring sessions condensed into one place. The goal is to do a series based on each organ system, but for now it's just the cardiovascular system right now since that was what most of my students struggled with.
I don't know if I'm allowed to link it, but it's called Veterinary Cardiology for Small Animal Medicine and it has a ton of great resources not just for cardio stuff but also for studying other organ systems as well. I put a ton of test questions in there to help cement the material, and I tested it on a handful of RVT students to see if it helped them feel more prepared for the VTNE. (Go figure none of them left reviews!)
Let me know if you have questions or if you're interested.

My previous clinic had globe-style cat restraint hats - thus I lovingly refer to the cats as space cadets.

Hi! I have ADHD, too. I left Penn Foster because the admin staff was too difficult to get ahold of when I needed them, and the method of the school itself wasn't structured enough to keep me on task. I completed three years with of work over 5 years before I abandoned PF for SJC, where I was actually able to stay on task and graduate.
That said, there are apps (some are even free!) to help you study A&P. I personally used the VTNE prep app to study for the actual exam and passed on my first attempt. Make sure you keep that one in your back pocket!
They're not joggers, but these Cherokee Infinity pants ate so comfortable. They're listed as low-rise but they pull up over my mom-pooch belly really well.
I'm sure Cherokee has jogger pants with a similar fit. If you have Prime then I definitely recommend using prime wardrobe try before you buy to make sure the fit and style are what you like.
Here's a section from my favorite book :) used copies go for anywhere from $8-20, new prints & revisions are >$70.
I bought my own set of clippers and I love them. They're the Wahl cordless rechargeable clippers without battery packs. Honestly you can write it off on your taxes as a work expense. I was also tired of not having blades or clippers that worked for catheters or surgical prep. People will ask if they can use my clippers now and I only let people I absolutely trust use them or if I am standing right there. Only for catheters, and I get them right back.

tbh we use a cat bag where I work and some of our kitty patients just, uh, do not like the cat bag and get even more stressed out when they're in it, lol. One of them absolutely hates the smell of other cats and so her owner brings her own cat bag with her to her cat's appointment for us to use since our cat bag has other cats' scent on it.
We don't use air muzzles but we use these muzzles for the brachycephalic breeds.
Puzzle feeders! Many, like this one, don't require much active movement. Make him work for those kibs!
Good catch. I linked the wrong thing. You want the actual textbook. There's a deal on Amazon for a textbook and workbook package, which may be great depending on how you learn. OMG yesss. Also, thank you so much for the kind words. I try to make sure I've got her best interests in mind! I'm investing in a three pack of these hunt-able, fillable mice (https://www.chewy.com/doc-phoebes-cat-co-indoor-hunting-cat/dp/179102) from chewy, and I'm looking into some sort of puzzle feeder. My girl is a surprisingly smart cookie (food pun intended) ...when she wants to be. I don't want to discourage her from eating her dry food, but I am trying to make her work for it in a fun way!
Slightly off topic:
Poor thing's got nuclear sclerosis developing though. Our vet said that we've caught it early, and I have motion and daylight sensor nightlights throughout our apartment for her. I'm just hoping if I introduce them to her and make it easy at first, she'll adapt to them, and I'm trying (but failing) to search for any clinical trials I might be able to get her into.
Our veterinarian also recommended looking into getting her a buddy. She takes naps while I work (from home), and will sometimes wake up and walk out of the bedroom wailing like I've left her on the side of the road. The vet thinks it may be either attention seeking or disorientation, but either way on they days I have to go into the office, her having a buddy may be ideal. I'm screening a potential candidate right now, he's medically complex with a heart murmur and unspecified "litter box issues," but he's historically been good with other cats, and is about her size and temperament. I'm still drawing up a strategy plan for keeping them separated during the quarantine and separation period. :/
Very close to 50 year old tech here, plus a car wreck that screwed up a knee. I like the kneeler pads for the bathtub for Moms. They're usually waterproof and easy to clean. I keep one in the treatment area and just pull it out when I need to kneel.

one of my old clinics i used to work at gave us all unisex Cherokee scrubs. they were decent but I didn’t like the way they fit me; I felt like i looked like a box. Definitely prefer the Adar pros!!

If you’re looking on Amazon, I’d go with something like this:
Stick with a name brand for healthcare stuff.
These are multi-use bottles, but you won’t be touching the bottle tip to the eye. Hold a gauze square or paper towel under your pup’s eye, then squeeze the bottle to produce a gentle stream. Rinse the eye and use the gauze to catch the excess that runs off. You may need a helper until you get the hang of it. Check out some YouTube videos or ask your local vet nurse to demonstrate.
My husband got these for me last year and I have worn them through, but they're comfy enough that I want to buy the same ones again. Slip resistant, cushioning for long hours on your feet and cute/fun pattern. Water resistant as well Sketchers
i ordered 6 pair from amazon, from a company called Adar pro. but however, i am 5’3 and have a B cup. they are very comfortable!!!! A treat bag that has a metal top closure (oh dear my words are failing me). Lots of times treat pouches are open top or drawstring and they suck cause you bend over and treats fall out. But there are ones that have slim metal open/close tops that are heaven sent!!

Hi there!!! I typically do all of this postmortem. I’ll include the link to the exact vials I bought on Amazon: hair vials I just found little paw print charms that I tie to the vials on Amazon as well! :)
Honestly, I really dislike lint rollers.
Mostly because the average person understands that you work with animals. A few quick swipes is enough, but unless you're coated in COPIOUS amounts of hair, it doesn't make a difference.
I think this kind are better: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00WQY9PHW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glc_fabc_A9YHKX0A28GW7VXP8YAB
I don't know about this brand, but rather the type.
You just rinse it off, dry, and go about your day.
I use these ones :) typically I also have the same problem even with thin socks so I tend to slather my feet in baby powder. Works pretty good!

not a vet tech myself but a carpenter (trying to get into a VT program fall 2021) so i can't say exactly how it would be accepted in the workplace but for good hearing protection and easy on/off you could try a band-style earplug like this:
3M - 90537-00002T Safety Band Style Hearing Protector, Orange Oranges https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000LNKDEE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_QRA-FbRR7R865
these are by far the best ear protection i have used on the jobsite, they do the job against saws, drills and hammers and i bet they'd do the job against a yapping dog too. goodluck 👍
Everyone should have a good watch. It's useful in clinical situations and just a nice fashion accessory.
You can get good watches under $50 too. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000B55AEA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_DKaZFbVWCAWEZ
My go-to is a pair of well fitting solid black scrubs with neutral sneakers. You’ll look crisp for the interview, and practical for the shadowing. I would personally much rather look like I’m ready to jump into the work than an office, given the nature of the job. If you don’t already have one, bring a cheaper stethoscope (no need to break the bank) $14 Amazon and don’t forget a pen!
Read up on current flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives, and common vaccines. Beyond that, just listen to what you hear the doc say and you’ll be golden!
Don’t be too discouraged by what you hear regarding emotional burnout. There are ways to prevent/delay it...you need to advocate for yourself and practice self care. You deserve vacation time. You deserve fair pay. You deserve opportunities for advancement. If you love vet med, don’t quit until you find a clinic that values you as much as you do.

Thank you so much for all the help!
The techs are all very nice and know I want to learn, the doctors seem kinda hesitant and give short answers.
I’m not sure what they’ll think of officially shadowing, as I’m a kennel attendant we do go to treatment, but it’s more for restraining (and asking questions if I see something interesting, but 95% of the time it’s just holding for vaccines).
Thanks, I didn’t want to jump the gun on books. I downloaded the app and already love it, since I’m usually too embarrassed to ask the techs/people I work with since everything-even a rabies case- is new and interesting to me.
Do you think this would be too soon as well? I only ask because I’m so “new” to biology and anatomy (I took them in high school of course) but since I was never interested I never did well.
Thanks again for all the help, I’m sorry for all the questions. I really appreciate all the help!
this book is an excellent reference. the drug protocols are a little outdated, but the photos and diagrams of all the parasites, eggs and their life cycles are spot on. it's great to keep a copy near your lab area to flip through if you're ever not sure about something.
https://www.amazon.com/Veterinary-Parasitology-Reference-William-Foreyt/dp/0813824192
It's actually a really great book from what I can see just skimming through it. I would have loved to have this as a new grad tech.
I'll take my lumps. I follow the recipes from Dr. Becker. Complete and AAFCO compliant. My dogs have their blood work done twice a year and they're always perfect. I grew up eating steak tartar so the whole "it's not safe" thing doesn't fly with me. If I can eat raw meat and feed it to my family with no issues I can mange for my dogs.
For anyone interested learning more about raw diets or the recipes the book is now available on Kindle. The back of the book has a complete nutritional break down of the recipes.

So far my favorite are Filas work shoes with non slip soles and memory foam insoles. I have stood on my feet in concrete floors at 2 different veterinary clinics for about 14 years.

This was a great coloring book to use when you are learning and practicing anatomy. I may not need to be able to name the muscles, but it is helpful to understand how the body fits together. I used this during my animal anatomy class as supplementation and it really helped. https://smile.amazon.com/Veterinary-Anatomy-Coloring-Book-2e/dp/145577684X/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1488689066&sr=8-10&keywords=anatomy+coloring This book was one of our textbooks for the anatomy lab, I treated it like a coloring book too. Since it is all black and white, it was more helpful to see everything in color. https://smile.amazon.com/Pictorial-Anatomy-Cat-Gilbert/dp/029595454X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1488689245&sr=8-1&keywords=anatomy+of+the+cat
Hope that this helps!
These two books:
I found a lot of the questions on the VTNE were harder than the questions on the phone apps they have available. Mosby's came closer to the real deal.
For any interested, I found a similar mug on Amazon for less than $15
I have this watch and wear it every day. I've had it for almost 2 years. It's waterproof and shock resistant. It's very durable and easy to clean. It's not as white as it used to be though, but it comes in other colors as well.
The crocs without holes have been amazing! the Danskos didn't help me at all but I go my entire shift pain free with these and they are very affordable!
If you can take any non core classes (maths, science etc.)that don't rely on passing Anatomy in the upcoming semester. I highly recommend taking your time, don't go for the full course load. Most programs are designed to get it over with as fast as possible and they have unrealistic expectations. So if you can take the extra time do it! Also there's a fantastic Anatomy coloring book that got me through those classes. http://www.amazon.com/Veterinary-Anatomy-Coloring-Book-2e/dp/145577684X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1448610143&sr=8-1&keywords=veterinary+anatomy+coloring+book Don't give up hope, and feel free to PM if you just want to vent/talk.
i didn't realise things were already like that in NY, i'm from ontario canada haha, we havent quite gotten there yet but that is the way things are headed for us too. either way the test really isnt terribly difficult as long as you study for it. i used this http://www.amazon.ca/Review-Questions-Answers-Veterinary-Technicians/dp/0323068014 and ya its expensive but it was worth every penny for me. I was scared of blood draws too but trust me if you throw yourself into it and at least attempt every time you have the chance to it becomes less scary and much more natural. Just take a deep breath, its a lot to take in but there are tons of vet techs out there so its not impossible ;)
I am also graduating in June and studying for the VTNE, along with the Review Questions book recommended by the other person, our instructors also recommended this book to study from.
