You need to give up on the idea of using the birdhouse again. There's no way to get rid of the wasps and have that birdhouse be a place that 1. is safe for birds and 2. is a place where birds will want to be. Kill the wasps, savor the feeling, dispose of the birdhouse and start anew.

Raid takes a couple of minutes to kill them. If you need them to go down instantly, you have to use something like this. https://www.amazon.com/Pt-Wasp-Freeze-II-Aerosol/dp/B01AO2TT64
This stuff is amazing. It foams up, immobilizing them and kills them in seconds. And it shoots like 20ft so you don't have to get close.
Maybe this?

I wonder if you could run a weak electrical current through it?
The two concepts are not mutually exclusive. I feel like there are better choices than using a package for it, but a phobic reaction is what it is.
One of those better choices might be to carry a weapon designed for the purpose. I'd suggest something like https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000MU2MJA/
I wouldn't count on them not realizing it's you.
Once you spray them they're going to go into attack mode and start attacking anything nearby that registers to them as a threat. They're specifically primed to recognize mammals as threats by various factors, including our eyes and even the CO2 that we breathe out; so if you're there, they'll attack you.

That said, given that this appears to be an exposed nest, I'm guessing these are -not- yellowjackets or hornets, and thus are going to be somewhat less aggressive. Accordingly you're probably fine with your plan to spray them and run. Do it at night or in the early morning; don't shine a flashlight on them; make sure to use a proper wasp spray; and make sure to get the nest soaked well.
If you really want to be cautious, you can get something like this -- https://www.amazon.com/Pt-Wasp-Freeze-II-Aerosol/dp/B01AO2TT64 -- which is supposed to be able to instantly paralyze them so they can't attack you at all.
Recipe and link to traps. Warning- this worked vary well, so you will be emptying frequently. You could use this recipe in any "drown" trap, i would think.
I would just add some soap to kill them faster (helps as it gets full)
2x cheap $6 pumpkin traps- bait is
2x tablespoons sugar,
2 x shot glasses water, splash of grenadine, smattering of fig jam,
1x shot glass of apple cider vinegar (very important to keep bees away) ,
1x shot glass Wernesgrüner Pils, splash of apple cider. --
What has worked VERY well for me is maximum strength Alocane Emergency Burn Gel, 4% Lidocaine Maximum Strength Fast Pain and Itch Relief 2.5 Fl Oz https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EM4G7LG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_RtyrFbPXSP9ZP
It says burn gel but one of the uses listed is for big bites and stings. It has 4% lidocaine and if you get even a tiny little bit on your lip your whole lip goes numb lol. It works wonders really.

They are amazing. Wasps flock to them. I catch 80ish on a single trap before throwing it away. edit: they work better without the guards attached.
