yeah there's a little miscommunication between unicode and the emoji standard there. According to unicode it is "Face With Look of Triumph". The emoji standard doesn't interpret the emotion of the emoji (anymore) and calls it "Face With Steam From Nose" and its description reads: >A face with air coming out of its nose, in a proud yet disdainful way.

Same here. HTC emojis look mild and neutral expression wise while being simple and easy to read (this is the first time I see them and can't form any opinion).

I'm partial this one but they are all so good. I also liked the neutral faced tongue sticking out. The smiley tongue doesn't convey the same message. I need an emoji that expresses sticking out your tongue at somebody without a smile dangit!
The smiley ones look like a dog panting, while the old ones say "neener, neener." Totally different message, and I don't have use for the panting dog message.

Actually, the official name is Person With Folded Hands which was approved as part of Unicode 6.0 in 2010 and was added to Emoji 1.0 in 2015. Praying hands is a common usage but it's only one of the usages of this emoji.

I think the faces have a potential to look nice, but the way they've done them is ugly. They should keep the flat colors where possible. I think Microsoft's emoji is a good example of how to do this right. Hell, just making the blobs round would be sufficient.

It has been fixed in Twemoji 2.4. Now Discord just has to update their Twemoji instance.
The premise was made because certain emojis look different on other phones. Just look how different 😪 has looked in the past. There's even a screenshot of a Facebook mom using that emoji sending her condolences over someone announcing a family member had passed away, thinking it was a cry emoji.

What is actually does is insert I and a character known as "variation selector 16". This character is normally placed after certain other characters that can be displayed as either an emoji or plain text, like a heart. When placed after a character whose default representation is plain text, it indicates that the character should be displayed as an emoji instead. When placed after a character that has no other representation, you get any one of several "missing character" glyphs instead, and sometimes the letter I is shown as an A for reasons I'm not sure of.

Comparing it with all variations on this page make it seem like the new one is more in line with what people on other platforms (iOS mostly) will see. I think that's a smart move, because like you said, it looks kind of cute and flirty on your device, but if you send it to someone with an iPhone, it will look more psychotic.
It makes total sense that Google redesigned their emojis to fit in with the rest of the variations. More consistency is a good thing IMO.

Before there were skin colours the default wasn't yellow, it was white.
If you go to, for example, https://emojipedia.org/thumbs-up-sign/ and click any of the styles you can see what it was in old versions: note how in most platforms it was white.
When they decided that was a bit... you know... not cool... they decided to add options for other races, and they figured they should make the default a "non-standard skin colour" (the specification doesn't say yellow, though that seems to be what most platforms adopted*) and nobody stopped to think "hey, why don't we just do that and not bother with a skin tone option".
*Microsoft actually tried grey to start with before realising that made everyone look like zombies.
Many pieces of text-to-speech software such as the one included with Windows 10 can actually read emojis and use the names found on Emojipedia.

Microsoft has the best emojis right now in my opinion. Simple, flat, clean and better designed for the small size emojis are displayed at.

Maybe. It could also be a case of change just because they haven't changed them in a while. Or they feel like these better "match" the new face style?
Personally I like iOS's style of emoji (which has a gradient but much more subtle than the new Oreo emoji) for faces/people and Android KitKat's style for animals. I would take the mash up between the two if I could and don't see any problem with there being a sharp difference between detailed people and simple but fun animals.
You know, for all the crap Windows 8 got, their moon didn't look half as bad as the others.. Of course the android 4.3 - 7.1.2 creepy moon is the benchmark here!

Apple is actually behind this time around. Windows, Android, Facebook and Twitter have already added the new emoji in Unicode 10. You can see them all on emojipedia.
for the most part it isn't a worry that people will be confused about what they are, but that the slight differences in appearance between what you're sending and what the other person sees can change perceived meaning.
This has been happening for a while - here is a chart of the changes Google has been making over time. You can see that the face with tears of joy, for example, now matches more closely across the board.
The other consideration is that Google wanted consistency within their own emoji pack - as they updated the more detailed emojis to match the new standard it started to clash with the look of their less detailed blob emojis (covered a bit in this article), which is what pushed this big overhaul.
So, as a by-product of trying to match look and feel both within their emojis set and cross-platform, certain things just got uglier. I do think that they could have kept the cuteness of a lot of their animals without sacrificing design consistency, but maybe they'll update with the next release if people are vocal enough about it...
Since we're on the general topic of emojis, I have to say, having used Windows 10 for a while now, those are my favourite looking emojis. Every single one of them is consistent with every other and they all fit into Microsoft's emoji design language.

Edit: tl:dr : The Unicode Consortium is the only reason that you are able to read this text on any modern device that you can access this text with.
Unicode is the standard by which we are allowed to communicate in english.
Computers operate in binary, right? 0's and 1's.
So Intel builds some computer parts that say '01' is 'a' and AMD builds some computer parts that say '00' is 'a'.
Now they can't communicate without some sort of translation layer, and since it's far far far more than just a couple of companies that might make binary-english standards, that translation layer would be very complex and expensive in terms of both time and money.
Unicode (and other older standards) attempt to fix this by having a unified code (uni-code) that everyone can use whether they want to represent a pile of shit, afrikaans, or mandarin.
We have emoji in unicode because Japanese folks used emoticons often enough that some devs started hardcoding them. In order for those emoticons to be sent to english speakers (since a smile picture is a smile picture and smile pictures had become a routine part of japanese communication), they had to be included in the standard so that every receiver would get the intended message. (e: a vast majority of current emoji are just made up by the unicode consortium based on recommendations. I'd rather the consortium be a dictionary. Set a standard for what people are using so that I can successfully receive their message. There's a smiley emoji because people used :) a lot and I think it should be left to those instances.)
It's not perfect. There are occasional controversies/confusions like the fact that some software vendors render U+1F52B as a pistol, and some as a water gun. Those that receive a water gun may have been sent a pistol where the transmitter intended to send a pistol.

They have been released but different platforms choose when they roll them out - Apple hasn't updated the iPhone emojis yet, they'll probably do it when iOS 12 comes out next month.
They've already come out with the emojis that are planned to be released next year and the trans flag isn't one of them. But the LGBT flag already exists 🏳️🌈

That's fucked up and ignorant. Yeah he needs to accept change but giving him this "macho hard truth" shit is not how you see an end to this problem. If it is a mental health issue his brain isnt 100% wired so some things are not clicking. It makes him feel like going into a deeper hole, AKA eating and ignoring his feelings of sadness and emptiness, is the only way especially with his lack of motivation. I went through something that it looks like what Demetri is going through (we are just watching thru streams no one 100% knows you armchair psychologists) but if he is feeling depressed and anxious I have been there. I was even 320 pounds and now i am 80 pounds lower and still going (im 6'1'' so im not fat anymore) but when i was at my heaviest i was feeling so low and it took me a year to tell anyone. After many people around me showed me love and MEDICAL help I learned how to control my anxiety and took meds for depression. Once he does this initial big step of accepting professional help with his mental health and now psychical help since he is so big then nothing is going to change. Why am i telling you this? Cause I have a feeling you guys are young so you don't know much about this topic so if anyone is reading this and feels like similar or down; ask for help, it gets better. If you want to help Greek show him that you are there as a fan and not as his psychology doctor telling him he is crazy and he needs to lose weight while you sit there and do nothing.

Let's talk about PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian System)
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a condition that affects a woman's hormone levels. Women with PCOS produce higher-than-normal amounts of male hormones. This hormone imbalance causes them to skip menstrual periods and makes it harder for them to get pregnant.
PCOS can also affects women during their childbearing years (15 to 44). Between 2.2 and 26.7 percent of women in this age group have PCOS 🌼 🌼 🌼
I've had it for 7 years now and as it varies from person to person, my most common symptoms are; hair growth, acne, sparse periods, extreme bleeding, painful periods, mood swings, and painful during intercourse.
It effects my day to day life but Its just a portion. Currently there is no cure for PCOS but there's options to help deal and improve.

Emojipedia actually stores high-quality image backups of old emoji versions. Just click on one of the rows for the different emoji sets and it will show old versions, from which you can then view its info and download a high-quality png of it for use as a Discord emoji.
If you want one that fits, I'd recommend Twitter's old gun emoji or Google's flintlock pistol.
The biggest problem with emoji is that they don't render consistently across platforms.
Have a look at all the different renderings of smirky face and notice that Samsung smirky is half asleep, Microsoft smirky looks worried, LG smirky looks specifically quite worried about getting to the toilet for a big 💩 and Mozilla smirky looks like a DreamWorks baby.
😪 is another one that's often misinterpreted although that's also cultural because Japanese people actually talk about the fact that when you get sleepy some people's noses get runny. When you yawn your eyes might water and the water might drain down your nose. Samsung adds zz to avoid ambiguity but that just makes it look like he's already asleep. So I send you a sleepy face and on say Microsoft, HTC or Messenger you clearly see a crying face.
This bothers me more than it has any right to, but I really hate how the same emoji has a range of different facial expressions depending on which vendor it's from. Like the monocle face that ranges from surprised, to inquisitive, to kinda smug. It's just so unnecessarily confusing.
I've had people misunderstand what I've said, because on my screen I sent an emoji that looked slightly surprised, but on theirs looked out of its fucking mind, almost offended (https://emojipedia.org/astonished-face/ the Samsung one. What the fuck were they thinking?!). Or the emoji which on my screen is grinning happily, but on theirs is making an awkward grimace.
