Looks like you didn't rinse the gravel before adding it to the tank.
Get yourself an Aquarium Gravel Siphon and a bucket.
I have an Inkbird temperature controller to help prevent these heart attacks.
It’s a separate temperature monitor that you can set. Once it detects a maximum temperature (that you set) it shuts off power to the heater/connected devices.
Yes! Air pumps and stones are cheap. You can even "double up" on filtration with a sponge filter.

If your pump is not vigorously agitating the surface, an air pump is the way to go.
First of all, thank you so much! :)
I got my shrimp stick at amazon, i got 4 varieties of it (protein, astaxanthin, mineral and bee pollen) The one they are munchin is mineral variety.
Here is the link

And the birds in the background are outdoor :) Always hear them in the morning, they are my beautiful alarm clock 😂
I have a blue multiset with something similar. Works great. Does what it says - no complaints. I'd assume that the one you show would be about the same. I use a couple other attachments as well. Handy to have when ye need.
Yeah, and if you wanna get cheap plants, try checking out r/AquaSwap. A lot of people sell plants there for a lot cheaper than they sell them in stores. For you, I suggest Java Fern and anubias cuz you can glue or tie them to rocks, and if you don't want to get a lid (bettas are jumpers btw) you can get 'floaters' aka floating plants, which are super cheap and also really good at eating up nitrates and nitrites in your water so the better water quality you'll have and they'll prevent your fish from jumping. Plants help keep your water clean, so the more you have, the less water changes you have to do! (but of course always keep an eye on your parameters ;)
However, with plants, the one thing you do have to buy is a light. But these plants are low-light plants so you don't have to buy one of those super expensive ones, this one should do just fine https://www.amazon.com/AQUANEAT-Aquarium-Light-Spectrum-Multi-Color/dp/B07T9Y7LQ4/ref=sr_1_9?dchild=1&keywords=aquarium+light&qid=1601182657&sr=8-9
Hope this helps!
the calico is the shubunkin and the black one is a common. i could be wrong though because it’s hard to see from the picture. good luck! i would suggest either using sand or just having a bare bottom tank because goldfish like to sift through their substrate but can easily choke on gravel. also some plants would be good for these guys, like java fern or anubias. this is my personal favorite fake plant as it’s very tall, wavy, and my goldfish loved it in my old tank before i switched to all live plants. if you have any more questions feel free to pm me!
If you want to go really science y get one of these https://www.walmart.com/ip/Mainstays-Flavor-Injector/14964956 put a little tape on the top hole of needle it also makes it real easy to get just the 5ml in the glass vials. Actually this is the best tool ever for testing as you gab 30mil and go sit down and test.
Some type of prefilter sponge like this has helped keep my shrimp from getting sucked in. Though this one is pretty fine so it can clog up quick if your filter is strong. Good thing is, shrimp love to eat off of it!
Here's a silver for the lengthy comment, thank you. I'm sorry to hear about the first dude, I this fish does much better. You seem to care another about bettas, can I suggest a book? The betta Bible by Dr Martin Bramah is a hidden gem if you're interested. It's taught me a whole lot about about bettas but it can be a little hard to find. Good luck anyway!

costs a bit more on amazon australia but heres the story, bought tons of fancy new filters in the sub $300 range, they all stink badly. Looked under my dads 30+ year fishtank and see this under there all yellow and purring so quietly. it's a Chinese clone that is still to this day made by quite a few people, believe marineland makes one too. The UV bulb is the real game changer, I only see algae when i drop some in to feed bottomfeeders. also, you fill it with many bags of material to change your ph/kh/whatever and it adds a gallon of water.
there is also a 700GPH version i dont see on amazon aus but when you see clones of this with the bulb you'll know.
I use a syphon hose. Right here on amazon
I would like to add that I live in Spokane,WA. And use tap water every time.
After every water change I treat my water with Stress Coat
I own 1 Oscar, 1 Red Jewel Cichlid, 1 Convict and 1 Pleco in my 75g.
As far as moving the fish, nothing changes when you go bigger. The steps listed above are perfect. My best advice is, if the fish store can hold the fish for you until you set up your tank at home, do that. Other than that you're just at a race against time from the moment the fish go into the bags. You benefit from being close to your LFS, so don't worry! And post pics when its done!
You need a refractometerto measure salinity and amarine test kit.
When doing water changes mix salt into RO or demineralized water to the desired salinity. DO NOT add water and then salt
I was having a hard time with my tank recently. It got knocked off its cycle somehow. Ammonia spikes and any time I did a small water, a bacterial bloom would appear for a day or so.
I added one of these and I saw a pretty good change in the water quality.
Jumping right in here for a sec. I was in Walmart the other day looking through the Christmas decorations aisle and found a pack of plastic clips with suction cups that are meant to hold candles to smooth surfaces, like someone’s window. I was thinking of trying to use a couple of those somehow to hold some plants up near the top of the tank.
I'm British and looking at the amazon entries for the US site on this was a bit surprisingly bare. Maybe check ebay too?
There was this for sale in the US, and while it's still cheap as declorinator goes it's about 5-7 times as much as I'd expect to pay for this in the UK.
If it’s new, in my experience, it can take a few weeks to calm down as bio film grows on the impeller and housing. That being said, I’ve always found HOB filters to be ‘noisy’. I have a Fluval 207 canister filter on my 29 gallon and I can’t hear it at all. It’s not even in a cabinet.
I recently changed the sponge filter in my 9 gallon shrimp tank and it’s very quiet. Though filtration is minimal compared to other filter types. This is what I bought.
AQQA Aquarium Biochemical Sponge... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09P83X6RK?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I keep Crystal Black Bee Shrimp in a fluval flex 9 gallon, but I used a slightly different solution.
They sell foam "pre-filters" that go over filter intake pipes to keep small fish/fry out of your hang-on-the-back or canister filters. I bought one, and cut so that it fits into those half-round, grill-slit covers on the fluval flex. The baby shrimp climb over the grill and munch on the sponge without getting sucked in.
Every month or so, I pop off the cover and wring the sponge out in the dirty water during a water change.
There are trace elements that coral use for color. Also, for coral you need to be testing your alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium as your corals need that to grow. If you haven’t done a water change because you thought parameters were fine without it, I’d start there.
Okay, couple thoughts:
Do you already know about the nitrogen cycle and is there a heater and filter on the tank already? If not I can talk you through fish-in cycling. My first betta years ago died slowly because no one had ever explained it to me and I felt awful.
I’d see if you can exchange the mollies & guppies for 2 more corydoras (get the same types that you already have). Shoaling species prefer to be in groups of 6+, and this community can be a touch intense about this “rule”, however, from my personal experience a group of 4 cories is generally pretty chill and not freaked out and stressed and will be fine until you have the space to get a bunch of them. They’re also a nice choice to stick with because bettas usually tolerate them really well.
You can often get used big tanks for dirt cheap on Craigslist or fb marketplace. Someone is giving me a 40 gallon with all the stuff included for free just because they don’t want it in their house anymore.
Live plants really make all the difference and if you get a bag like this you can literally just like push plants into it and they’ll get enough nutrients. Floating betta logs have been really popular in this community too, bettas get kinda tired when they have those big flowy fins so they take little naps inside the logs and it’s cute :)
Amazon sells the replacement parts. You can get the whole new uv light assembly, or just the sleeve.
It's a product called Wonder Shell. It dissolves and releases into the tank, but I'm not quite sure how to control it or how much it releases.
Many people do not know the other part of aquasoils. The buffering capabilities. It's parroted all over that aquasoils is great for plants, which it is, but this important aspect is also missing from the equation.
If you constantly fight against it's buffering capabilities, it will eventually wear out. I don't know how long it takes but I've seen some people say months.
(2HR aquarist site is incredibily good. I'd recommend browsing his blog articles. It's all updated and modern take on planted aquariums)
I would quarantine and add this not a vet just an opinion
Even good heaters fail. It’s so frustrating because we almost never consider it as something to fail until it does. You’ll want a temp control sensor that turns off power to the heater when it’s thermostat finds the water is too warm.
Inkbird ITC-308S Aquarium Heating... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07R195CQF?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share is what I have on many of my tanks after some.. unfortunateness very similar to yours. Came back from a vacation and only the loaches survived. Just about everything else was dead including many plants. I imagine if I didn’t get there when I did the loaches would have died too.
I would get something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SGX244K
It has two sponges plus some ceramic balls for extra filtration. They are very low maintenance. I have shrimp so I don't clean those sponges for a very long time and leave them for the shrimp, who munches on the biofilm.
OK noted.
I would still recommend adding at least an airstone in the corner. Orb sells a very tiny airstone which is almost invisible: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000S5JNBE I've bought this but haven't had a chance to use it yet!
Also regarding the hacking, I would recommend not using bio-rings, but instead using one compartment each of the following:
Matrix (pumice stones)
Eheim sintered glass
Biohome
Nano tech biospheres or other nano media https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09LQLZDBW
Since you are only using the O600, you should use the best media possible and I think all of the above are better than simple biorings. I have all of the above except for the EHEIM and Biohome because I already have more media than I have space for :-)
The most frustrating part is thinking you have them all gone and then eggs hatch about a week later. Since this is a shrimp tank No Planaria will also take care of the snails. No harm will be done to the shrimp, just make sure to remove any snails you do want in the tank.
Oh wow, yeah fuck that, it's totally worth it just to not do that!
I think this is nearly identical to the one I got from the UK amazon site https://www.amazon.com/Submersible-Aquariums-Fountain-Statuary-Hydroponics/dp/B08X4BWT6Y/ref=pd_aw_ic_dpcp_m_2_m_6?pd_rd_w=U5u1g&content-id=amzn1.sym.255344a1-da2c-493a-b885-2be08e7e7e94&pf_rd_p=255344a1-da2c-493a-b885-2be08e7e7e94&pf_...
I use this for fry and eggs and have always had pretty decent success. My cories laid eggs and I was able to get 20 of them to hatch and develop in there. Has the benefit of circulating many more gallons from the main tank than I would be providing in a hatchery tank!
Hatching fry and babying them up close is really amazing, but gets stressful really quickly. After I have an established colony, I'm just going to shrug and let it happen however it happens lol
Usually some prime fixes that problem, I use prime freshwater&saltwater by seachem https://www.amazon.com/Seachem-Prime-Fresh-Saltwater-Conditioner/dp/B00025694O
I would trash that lid and cut a new one from some polycarbonate or acrylic sheeting. Then you can use something like this that clips on the rim, and also enjoy looking at the fish from above.
It's hard to point to anything specific not seeing answers to the other obvious water based questions. If everything is indeed "fine" I'd suggest monitoring what food and how much you feed the fish.
Try get your next betta from a different store and get a new fish food there as well. I'd just get a tropical flake over a betta specific pellet as i've had issues with our betta's overeating pellet food that then expands in their stomach making it appear like swim bladder issues.
I'd recommend Fluval Enhancing Tropical Flakes - All my community fish love it including my betta's
No worries, keep an eye on him. Hard plastic plants can sometimes hurt Betta fins (like cut them if he swims too close) so just keep a casual eye out for that. if the tank is unbalanced that could also be leading to some lethargy
yay!
Totally fine, just means more work to manually remove waste while your tank cycles :P I'd recommend these test kits (ammonia) (6 other good things to know) like I mentioned they're not perfect, and if you get deeper into the hobby / more technical you'll want to upgrade, but these are great for beginners and super easy / fast to use.
As far as water changes/chemicals, I've never found a bottled bacteria to help speed the cycle. was just reading today that most of the cheap ones dye in the bottle long before you buy them and the expensive ones have short shelf lives and complicated storage instructions. I'd guess you need like 2-3 water changes a week but honestly, you won't know how many you need until you can get the test kits and see what you're dealing with.
The way that works is:
• Fish poop / food / dead plants rot and dissolve into Ammonia (poison)
• Bacteria turns that Ammonia into Nitr*ites (with an 'I' and also poison)
• Different Bacteria turn the Nitrites into Nitra*tes (with an 'A' and less poisonous to fish but food for plants)
• Your plants can eat the Nitrates and remove them from the water
If you see Ammonia or Nitrites*i* in the water you need to do a water change.
If you see no Ammonia or Nitrites, but some Nitrates, then the cycle is complete
If you see too much of any of it, you need a. water change
Good luck!
Use those hard plastic coolers, worked wonders for me. Like one of these I mean.
very good for moving fish
I use an air stone bar and a water fall hang on back water fall filter make sure the water level isn't too high so the water can cascade and disrupt surface tension for better gas exchange and oxygenate your water
Maybe look into a gang valve. You can control the pressure that way.
This is just a visual example. You can find ones with mounting brackets.
I wouldn't use it in place of the main filter cartridge. Purigen is a form of chemical filtration, like carbon, it just pulls a lot more out of the water than carbon does. You still need your mechanical filtration or you're likely to stall your cycle when you pull the purigen. I'm not wild about the filter cartridges that are meant for this filter personally. I always use something like this https://www.amazon.com/Master-Pet-Supply-Filtration-Freshwater/dp/B08P638D1S/ref=mp_s_a_1_16?adgrpid=114811971316&gclid=CjwKCAjw4ayUBhA4EiwATWyBrh_NZ_3EO14SgH78mKJiJvC6R9sgAbwFWquGAc80gRQhI3YeFethuBoCopcQAvD_BwE&hvadid=485080045136&hvd... and cut it to fit. This kind lasts much longer and handles being rinsed and reused for some time. Most filters recommend you replace them every couple of weeks or every month, but you're actually pulling a lot of your bio out of the tank instead of just removing debris. So I get this heavier duty stuff and just rinse it in dirty tank water at water change time to remove the trapped dirt and debris. Saves your bio bacteria while removing gunk and dead plant matter that eventually decay in your water. The cartridges that are meant for these filters start falling apart after about a month, so you're forced to sacrifice your bacteria. Regardless of which type you choose though, you should be able to get this stuff at any lfs or big box pet store.
I looked briefly and I'm a bit surprised no one else mentioned that the bowl is probably not the best living situation for the fish-fry. I understand that the fish-fry likely need to be kept separate from the adult fish for their safety, but I am concerned that the bowl has zero filtration, and that it's not easy to put a filter into a round small goldfish bowl (essentially you have put the baby fish into an uncycled tank, and the water volume is small so it would accumulate toxins faster). It would be better if you had one of those fish breeding nets which is a mesh net around a square/rectangle plastic frame - keeps the babies safe from the other adult fish, but still lets them have filtered water from the rest of the tank.
You need to get them something like this that goes in the main tank attached to one of the sides of the tank - and keep the top of the mesh/netting about an inch or so above the water level: https://www.amazon.com/Breeder-Hatchery-Separation-Incubator-Suction/dp/B09BFJ3TY7
That is bacteria bloom, probably cuz ur tank is not cycled yet. Sometimes it takes more than a month to cycle a tank depending on its size. I had the same issue when I started and I solved with this thing https://us.amazon.com/Deep-Blue-Laboratory- Freshwater-Aquariums/dp/B07D7HMTGT or if you get ceramic rings to set up your bacteria
I’m having the same problem and am considering this…. Commercial Chrome Wire Shelving 18 x 36 (2 Shelf Unit) 18" Height https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JPL9RNJ/ref=cm_sw_r_em_api_i_MZCDVNBPYCGD4CY61D6X?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Thanks! You can buy the clips in different mm. So you’ll need to find the mm thickness of the glass of your tank and match the clips.
This is what I bought, the 5mm version. Mine did rust a little where water did accidentally sit around the soft bumper piece, so you’ll want to make sure they are dry after taking the lid off. It’s nothing major though and you can’t tell unless you look down at the spot intently.
Lefunpets Sponge Filter Breeding... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B085HQ32GK?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share This sponge filter is made for 80 gallons. It’s always better to have more filtration. $9
Aquarium Air Pump, Rifny... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B083XQ2GTL?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share This air pump goes up to 100 gallons $19
It may be more expensive now than buying a normal filter, but it will last you a long time and you dont have to keep buying filter cartridges. I have both and they cause minimal surface water movement
I've heard a lot of flack about these not being good testing kits, but I've never had a problem with mine. It will put out the same results every time and I've even matched it with my LFS testing kit. I would 100! recommend it.
Ceramic rings seem to be the go-to. Make sure you have a sponge in there and throw a bag of these babies on top and you'll be good to go once the tank cycles. if this is a previously set up tank, make sure to keep running what ever filtration you have for at least a couple weeks, this will give your hob filter enough time to set up bio-filtration of its own.

I use this and it works well, definitely didn't kill my fish.
I’ve used the one below in a couple different tanks. I find some of the reviews of fish items, especially medicine like to blame the medication or the device etc for killing their fish, when in reality the fish was probably too far gone in the first place.

Edited to add, it’s pretty big and bulky and I did use it before I knew anything about the nitrogen cycle so I am not sure if it interrupts that or not.
Well then it's time to bring out the big guns:

Great, thanks for the tips!
I've added the air stone in there so hopefully that helps. Im using a canister filter with a lily pipe inflow and spiral outflow. If you look on the top right of my image you will see it. It' s quite small though so perhaps it doesn't create enough movement. I got this type on outflow because I used to have a betta in there and didn't want to create too strong of a current. Do you think I should consider swapping it out?
The outflow is similar to this
Your shrimp don't get caught in the openings at the bottom of that filter? I have never kept betas, but that makes sense that they would get stuck in filters. I have one of those (not sunsun brand, but same thing), I just have it in my quarantine tank.
When I said sponge filters, I meant something like this. It's run only by an air hose from a pump. https://smile.amazon.com/Aquaneat-Aquarium-Sponge-Filter-Breeding/dp/B071HVZVMP
They can’t climb or fly so unless your walls are just to low then you won’t have a problem. When I first had them I put them in to small of a container and had some escape, but they died fairly quickly. I’d keep them in a tub with some holes drilled in the top or just leave the top off Sistema KLIP IT Rectangular Collection Food Storage Container,236 Oz https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00284AG5U/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_52M528Z8T3FVPMSK39SW?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
if you want a self-contained unit this one is good, especially because it has no fine particle filter layer just sponges (it wont end up with all the crabs food stuck in it, and it has a bubble nozzle to do aeration.) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07TWD1P7X
what i usually see for semi aquatic crabs is a stack of slate to build up the height, a filter will change the landscape if its just sand below the waterline. hit some hiking trails with a strong backpack slate is not rare.
dirty filter bag material, that could contain ammonia and nitrates...which is perfect if you're gonna cycle a new tank, otherwise replace if going into a cycled tank. i see no water filter sheet for small particle filtration/water clarity, you can get a roll of it for a few bucks and cut to fit, put above the sponge, dense side up. https://amazon.com/dp/B00OF3FLTS/
depends what you plan to stock it with as far as plants, the smallness of your tank is a good thing in this case, you don't need a powerful light to go through a lot of water and bubbles, BUT if your light is shining through a glass lid it loses 2-5% of its power, and through acrylic you lose around 25%. you can get a 10Watt UV bulb and a cheap fixture at a home improvement store for like 10 bucks that will have PAR ratings. i also like the in-tank light bars like this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08R19G955
, but i have to use two for my 10gal (one front, one back) this uses the fact its underwater to avoid the light lost from water surface reflection and bubbles.
same thing happened with my girlfriend and i. it’s a little pricey but we got this chiller on amazon. i’m not sure how big your tank is, but that seller on amazon has a few different sized units to fit your needs. i’ve found that it keeps my tank around 65-67 degrees in 75 degree ambient temp in my room.
when my AC went out and the room temp spiked to 85, i took the hood off and had a fan blowing over the surface of the water. i’m not sure if it did much, but it seemed to help cool off the water a lot faster.
Its a shrimp stick. They come in different variety of flavors. This one is bee pollen flavor

high KH, lowish ph, and normal GH. that should still cycle...
better if you lower KH though
have you ever done a test like this on your water or sent a sample out?

It's essentially a straight 14-in air stone that I got on Amazon! I buried mine in the gravel a bit so that the bubbles weren't as strong
circulation is always good, it helps eliminate dead zones and moves detritis to your filters. as long as your fish can tolerate the current i dont see a downside. https://smile.amazon.com/HuYaYa-Pre-Filter-Sponge-4-Pack-Aquarium-Pre-Filter-Foam-Rolls-Compatible-Filter-Accessories-for/dp/B07GMV12BT/ref=cm_wl_huc_item these are the filters i use the fit is a little loose on my hang on back so i made a gasket out of cheap hose from my harware store
This should hopefully work. Got it off Australian Amazon.
Because I haven't seen it shared yet, amazon link for the API test kit

I think the cycling instructions I used were the fish lore (?) It's whatever is in the wikis.
I find the aquarium co-op youtube channel to be really informative (their website also has a forum full of knowledgeable people) Cory has videos on filters, the nitrogen cycle, stocking and all that
Get a notebook or paper, draw a column for the date, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite and notes. Track ammonia daily. Make notes of when/how you change or add anything while cycling. It took me at least 4-6 weeks to get everything constantly where I was happy.
While it was a sad end for your fish OP the best thing you can do is learn from the mistake (we've all done something) and learn how to course correct, where is why super regular testing while you're in the early stages of having your cycled tank with fish in it can be helpful.
Best of luck, and I know it sucks now but please stick with this amazing hobby.
They go in the filter, so the one I have has a spot to contain them.
this is the one I have, it uses an air pump
So far (a few months in) i like the filter. It came with 2 extra sponges and more bio balls than can fit in the spots, so they're just packed away until I may need them. I think there are tutorials on how to modify a hang on back filter to use bio balls and sponge filters. Aquarium co-op 's youtube channel might have something like that.
Good luck with your tank
If the tank isn’t new and diatoms keep coming back, they feed on silicates in your water.
Supposedly there are silicate soaking materials that you can use to help control it. I’ve never used it myself but it’s something you can look into. Side note, it also absorbs phosphate so if you have plants, it could be detrimental.

Small tanks are definitely a bit harder then larger ones, but will end up being cheaper. I suggest looking for a good tank first, then the corals and stocking you'd plan to get. Get all the tank stuff first then let the tank fully cycle before you put any invertebrates in. As for stocking, shrimp could work, maybe an emerald crab. Depends on your preferences.
More water changes will help a little, but not a lot. Less light is your best bet. You could also get shrimp, snails and plecos, etc. I use the magic eraser type thing to keep mine down, because my house is full of natural light.

With a planted tank like this, especially with a carpet, I actually wouldn’t recommend gravel-vaccing as hard as you usually would. Your plants will take care of the gunk, and in fact need it for nutrients since I see you have inert gravel! Otherwise, I would recommend a Mini or Small Python gravel-vac.
I also would recommend to get the Anubias on the right an adjustment. The roots are fine being buried in the stone wool, but I would make sure the rhizome is exposed. When that rots, your Anubias is done for!
Overall, beautiful tank!
I just ordered the Penn Plax cascade 1000 off Amazon the other day for $58 plus $15 off with a Discover card offer. This was also for a 29 gallon. Looks like the price has gone back up but if you aren’t in a hurry, something to consider. It hasn’t arrived yet but reviews make it look like a good entry level unit. It’s probably over kill for a 29 gallon but reviews do say the flow rate is slow for that size.

Yeah, no 24 hr shop in Bristol. If you have time before class to grab a tool, I'd get one with as fine/small a point as you can. Take the pic with you if it's on your phone so you can get suggestions at the shop maybe. Needlenose wirecutter maybe?
You just have to really watch, I just found this on Amazon after you posted ( didn't search as .co.uk though). But, I'd never heard of anything like it before. The only way I can leave it unattended is if I rubberband a mesh bag. Otherwise I have to have one thumb on the other end to stop the siphon as all my fish are nano fish.
I don't know how he'll do not being able to get to the surface for air, but make him as comfortable as you can with lighting etc.
Thanks, it's not prettiest tank on here by any means but as long as the fish are happy I am too.
But yeah I just have gravel, the plants grow really well in it and are rooted firmly. They grew a little bit slow at first when the tank was new since there weren't many nutrients in the gravel but not anymore. I'm using a bottle of Seachem Flourish sparingly, only about half a cap full a week at most. The ones at the bottom don't really need it but it has helped my java moss up top a lot. As for lighting I'm just using this LED from Amazon.
I would definitely recommend the live plants, they're really easy to maintain and are fun to watch grow. But most importantly they act as a secondary filter for your tank and convert the ammonia in the water to oxygen. Plus they're cheaper than fake plants as once you plant them you can easily get most to propagate.
There are many different kinds. Here's one example off Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Marineland-PA0392-Activated-Neutralizing-1417-Gram/dp/B0002566YM/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?keywords=Ammonia+neutralizer&qid=1553367999
You might consider changing to a canister filter. It will remove tons more waste. Amazon has some cheap ones that are actually very good. Lots of people with turtles in the comments on this one Cascade CCF3UL Canister Filter, 100 Gallon, 265gph https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002DJ9NY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_kZGQCbZADV6E8
Can also use polyester fiberfill or quilt batting and make/cut your own filters.
I've got this one https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08B3HWTY9/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The 25 or 50 W should be good for your 5 gallon, and it does self- regulate
At this point, maybe getting a new tank set up would be your best bet. They also sell breeder boxes that hang on the outside of the tank. I used this one for guppy fry.
I don’t know much about pea puffers, so take this with a grain of salt — maybe set the baby up in a bucket with a heater and bubbler in it? You’ll have to do small, daily WCs to keep the water parameters stable but the increased space may help her grow a bit more!
Do yourself a favor and buy this. The link is actually a really good sale. It's honestly a necessity for anyone who is sincerely invested in the welfare of their animals. Just do it.
I jammed it in the gravel first, but they knocked it out :)
I might make a more permanent version with a carbon fibre rod fixed to one of these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Zoo-Med-MS1-Zoomed-Clip/dp/B000R9A5DG
Would these two pieces work for me? I’m from Puerto Rico so Amazon selection is quite small
