Yeah, I bought a bottle like these ones from my grocery store for like $2. Just make sure it has an adjustable nozzle - close the nozzle all the way, then open very slightly until you get a decent mist.
Video Example - great resource in general for shaving cream dye
Keep at it, you're asking the right questions and looking to learn. Getting dye on a disc is pretty basic, getting multiple colors definitely presents unique challenges and isn't always straight forward. I'm no artist by trade, just done a lot of experimenting. That's the best thing to do and it'll start to make sense over time. I was hoping with a more formal background might chime in, but did my best to explain things as I understand them. The Adobe Color Wheel is also pretty useful to get a sense for how colors mix.
I'm often surprised by what colors you can get on different base colors plastics. Purple and Yellow would usually mix to brown for instance. But I was able to get a purple tone from Lilac Idye on a neon yellow disc. It's on the muddier side of purple, but if I'd used Violet, I'm sure I could have gotten a much more vibrant purple. I'd also be pretty confident in yellow dye not effecting darker purples, the pigment is too light to tint a rich deep color like purple much. But lighter shades and lilac would definitely run risks being exposed to yellow. It's a tricky beast to wrangle.
I bought this tweezer kit on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08DN6MYTP/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_NXSNEKSM1PMSPHTFY2ZB?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
And I usually don't have any bleeding occur. I don't mess with the off brand vinyl and just buy the Cricut Premium Permanent Vinyl in bulk rolls. It's not that much more expensive, and never have bleeds
I just bought these. They come with some funnels and pipettes as well. They ship in a box with a Styrofoam insert and each bottle nestles nicely into the Styrofoam slots.
My typical method with stencils is to place the vinyl onto contact paper then use a scraper to go over that to make sure the vinyl will stick to it. After that I peel the backing off the vinyl and then weed out the area I'm going to dye. If the points start coming up I use tweezers to help hold those spots down. After I get the stencil up, I'll place the disc on the vinyl and go over it again with the scraper very thoroughly this time. And when going over those points, I try to scrape towards the end of the point and I'll use my fingernail sometimes. These are the tools I use throughout the process. u/pipedreamer79 has a very good how-to here that should hopefully help as well.
What kinda machine ...I was thinking of picking up this 200$ one on amazon ....
Brother ScanNCut CM100DM Home and Hobby Cutting Machine with a Built-in Scanner
just as an FYI, if you buy vinyl at a physical store, like Michaels or Hobby Lobby or whatever, it is CRAZY expensive. You should check out Oracal 651 12x12 vinyl sheets on amazon. It is maybe 25% of the cost compared to what you pay in a physical store.
I've been through a few of these and they work great: 63 pack for $29
also, the silhouette contact paper sucks pretty bad if you do any dyeing with heat. you end up with more of the adhesive on the disc than you do remaining on the contact sheet :(
I successfully turned this Eclipse 2.0 Reactor into a jet black blank.
Pro chem & dye Onyx, 10/10
Oracal 651 permanent black vinyl from here.
Hot dip, I noticed the pan did start a slow simmer so it was probably way too warm. Anything else I should watch out for? Or was it just too hot.
This can also happen with 651. The bath got too hot.
https://www.amazon.com/Thermometer-Accurate-Temperature-Electric-Grilling/dp/B07X8YN74X
Get a thermometer for 10 or 15 dollars that digitally tells you the temperature, and never let your bath get above 130 F. When Im doing this on my stove top in a pot, the stove is usually barely on, or maybe ill turn it between low and medium to start to get it up to temp more quickly, but once it gets to 125 or so I turn it off and just let sit. Ill check it again in 10 or 15 min, without disturbing the disc by sticking the thermometer to the side of the disc, and if the temp has dropped to like 115 or below, i turn the stove back on and keep monitoring the temp. Again, the stove is like barely on, and the goal is to bring it to the high 120s, but never let it go past 130. You can probably get away with higher but ive never had problems with burns by sticking to this.
In my experience it rarely takes more than about 30 or 40 min to get very deep blacks on discs by doing this.
I abandoned contact paper entirely after trying this vinyl I got on Amazon. Absolutely no bleeds. Little harder to work with, but the end result has been the best of anything I’ve personally tried.
Glossy White Adhesive Vinyl Roll... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07C83Q1HR?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Any vinyl weeding tools and vinyl paper should do.
I use https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08FB67K9X for weeding (I only use 3 of the tools so far) and https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08HVR7DNW (although I saw that several dyers recommend Oracle vinyls but those may not be available in your country).
That's incredibly clean... especially for using Cricut vinyl!
Just in case you start getting bleeding problems like i did and hate dealing with the curled vinyl (from being rolled), I strongly recommend Oracle 651 permanent sheets (50 pack is the best deal). This brand is top shelf and having precut (flat) 12"x12" sheets, it's one sheet per cut/disc and wraps completely around the disc (maybe not the Condor). If you don't mind the curl, you can also buy this on a roll.
Use Oracle 651 permanent vinyl. This solved 90 percent of my leaks just switching to this brand -I was previously using the Cricut branded vinyl sold at Walmart. Another tip is to use a heat gun (or blow dryer) to soften the vinyl to help activate the adhesive and help squeegee the air bubbles out just before dropping it in the dye. Focus more on the edges of the vinyl and you should be good, small air bubbles away from the edges never cause problems for me.
95% of this problem was elimated for me when I started using Oracle 651 and the transfer tape linked below. Occasionally some will stick around the removed stamp and it’s impossible fully prevent, but this minimized it tremendously. When some adhesive is left, freeze the disc (solidifies the adhesive and prevents dye mixed with the adhesive from bleeding) and use goo gone to remove. Wash with COLD water afterwards.

I have a kit similar to this one (wax carving, not wood carving like I thought). The bigger heads are great for scooping bubbles and debris from the glue, and the variety of heads let you do some varied swirls when you're doing patterns after putting the dye down.
i had nothing but failure using the cricut brand transfer tape. it always stuck too good. switched to the cheapest clear shelf paper on amazon - WAY better. the low tack shelf paper just works better

I've had one for a while in the closet after doing some airbrush tattoos when pokemon go got big. Mine is something akin to this one
That being said, since I started using that over a straw to move, it's a big difference. I've been able to shape colors easier before adding other colors to get some cool shapes. Also helps pop air bubbles or push them to the edges faster.
Sorry if it wasn’t clear, not necessarily actual epoxy but just the powder that is used to color it. I’ve found it on Amazon for much cheaper than other stuff.

I weed after I apply. But you can do it either way. I do use contact paper, link is below and I will NEVER use anything else. Easy to fix mistakes, strong, and leaves no residue. For centering I usually cut a small circle directly in the center. Then remove the back of the vinyl, lay it sticky side up, and dangle a laser over the vinyl then place the disc face down on the vinyl. The laser will guide the back of the disc.

I use this amazon tweezer set and has been going strong for over a year now.
From that set, I use primarily the ESD-10 and ESD-16. I slightly bend the tip of my tweezers so it makes a very small sharp hook on the end. This allows me to place the hook into the vinyl cut line and simply pry it up with no effort. I dont use precision exacto knife. Just a tweezer, magnifying craft glasses (similar to TDIDI), and a small handheld O-light flashlight.
I mix 1/4tsp of prochem with about 2.5mL of acetone and 2oz of lotion. Then use these to “paint” on the stencil. The tricky part is getting dye into these applicator bottles.
I’ve been getting my 651 and transfer paper from Amazon. I have not had an issue with the vinyl or the transfer paper. Once I peel the stencil and apply the transfer paper, lay it on a flat surface and roll it with a rolling pin. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.

Polypropylene is also compatible. These Nalgene bottles work great. I bet you could find even cheaper knock offs if you look around!
Your assumption was correct. The best solution is to find some bottles made from polyethylene. It's compatible with acetone. If you search amazon for "acetone bottle" there are some nice options. I like having the dye in a squeeze bottle personally.
Something like this will do well:
I would definitely not recommend masking tape. Use good contact paper or ideally vinyl. Most dyers will use Oracal products, most notably Oracal 651. I use the 150' roll, but this is essentially what I use for all of my Nice Ace stencil work: https://www.amazon.com/10-12-Sheets-Silhouette-Permanent/dp/B01M2B4PUD/ref=sr_1_8?dchild=1&keywords=oracal+651+square+matte&qid=1631191162&sr=8-8
Good luck and DreadfulSoul, heck of a dye, I love it!
Here It is. It’s to germinate seeds at a consistent temperature without getting too hot or cold. It speeds up the dyeing time since you can’t let the disc sit in floetrol too long or it will come out muddled
These precision tip bottles are great for applying if you can get the lotion in them!
You could use a vacuum chamber. Seems like an expensive option though. https://www.amazon.com/Chamber-Stainless-Degassing-Upgraded-Stabilizing/dp/B08F5159M9/
I've been thinking about going to a store to look for something like this.
This is the glue I’ve been using, I’ve heard there maybe a cheaper one but this usually gets me around 5 beds done.

I've come across these uv powders that I think in theory you could mix in with the pro chem to get it to react to uv light. I've thought about trying it myself but haven't experimented yet.
If that isn't an option do you have any idea what it would cost to send a package internationally?

Cricut has some pretty legit tools for weeding and pressing vinyl. My wife had a set that she used for t-shirt applications and decals. I started using hers a couple of months ago and managed to get dye all over them. She got me a set of my own for Christmas.

I see you have a box cutter to weed with, don’t. Order some metal picks, dental picks work great, from amazon like these
The get a scraper like this to press it to the transfer tape first and then smoothly with out wrinkles or bubbles to your disk.
I’ve been doing vinyl on shirts, cups and signs for a side hustle for years now. You don’t want to try to weed with a box knife and credit cards aren’t stiff enough to do a good job of smoothing.
Thanks for your help. One more question then. I'm noticing online there are different types of i Poly for sale. Should I avoid the ones that do not specifically state they are for most plastics.
Example 1 here stating use for plastics
Example 2 here, says it's good for polyester and nylon, nothing about plastics though
the vinyl transfer tape stuff you see in my gallery actually sucks and I don't recommend it at all. I use this stuff now and it is fantastic: http://shop.vendio.com/cncsigns/item/911402157/index.html
As for the vinyl itself, I use Oracal 651 vinyl that I get off amazon. they sell a 63 pack of 12x12 sheets for around $30 here: https://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-651-Starter-Adhesive-Assortment/dp/B01NADR97B/
It takes a bit of trial and error and lots of practice. Keep going!
I use vinyl. We’ve got a big roll and I’ll just use a 12”x12” sheet for each stencil. This is the one I’ve been using, as it was something we already had in hand and decided we could do it for discs. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00WTFQTRM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_2PihFb67ACZ6S
People use glow tape for this. I don't believe there is any dye that will make your disc glow.
Im using this vinyl from amazon that comes in 12x12 sheets, it works very well for dying but it is a bit strong and can leave residue I have to clean up afterwards but it is very cheap.
