That’s because such an insane number of chemicals have a benzene ring in them. A large part of wood is lignin, which has a very impressive number of rings. An aromatic (benzene) ring just has a certain type of stability to it, which makes it very important. It’s true that non-substituted aromatic rings (plain benzene, or naphthalene) aren’t very healthy, but the aromatic ring structure itself is just that, a structure. Since so many of the chemicals we synthesize have an aromatic ring, it’s not rare to see an article saying “x causes cancer” with an associated aromatic compound in it.

So yeah, aromatic compounds are everywhere and span the whole range of helpful to harmful. But yep, p-dichlorobenzene is definitely not ideal for regular exposure.

In my state we have this, its advertised as similar to turkish delight and they come in all sorts of fruit and nut flavors.
