my ham never ever chewed and i didnt know why. she wouldn’t even chew paper towel tubes with peanut butter on them. i was so worried that her teeth would get unhealthily long. i bought these and she LOVES them! its the only thing she’ll chew on. i highly, highly recommend these!
Hi OP, I'm sorry you're getting people shouting you down rather than helping. I also went to pets at home and bought an unsuitable cage, then got told it was too small and bought a bigger one, only to find out that also wasn't suitable and he would bite the bars! £75 on cages later, I finally settled on this: https://www.argos.co.uk/product/7633016 which meets the requirements and is the largest storage box I could find in the UK. I then cut out the top of the lid and put wire mesh on top, tied down with cable ties. As for a wheel, this one has served me well: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00365P9NY/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_73DF6YAKKEPBSY5QJ50T
I know how much a pain it is when you've already spent so much, but I can see you have tried your best with so many hides and toys. If you can't afford to do this all yet, then I think deepening the bedding as much as you can may make a difference. Hope that helps!
I bought this one for my Robo and she seems to really like it. She doesn’t chew her bars anymore like she did with her temporary cage and she has lots of room to burrow : Prevue Pet Products 528 Universal Small Animal Home, Dark Gray https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074FH47MQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_RH3xFb0ZH16GD. Only thing is this ones $95. When I bought it it was $80 but I couldn’t find it under the “Purchase Again” tab
Hi! I recommend the Niteangel Wheel in the size Large, which is 11.6 inches. It’s a little pricey but IMO worth it as it’s made of really sturdy plastic, completely silent (the only thing you can hear is your hammy’s little nails clacking against the plastic) and height adjustable.
Hi! You can give your hamster Whimzees - they’re edible chews for dogs but safe for hamsters. I’d say about one a month is okay, and a lot of hamsters tend to like them! You can buy them on Amazon.
You could also try leaving a chew toy or two in his food mix for a few hours and then give it to him; he might chew on it just because it smells like his food. If not, you can mix flour (preferably buckwheat flour, it’s the lowest in fat...? I forgot lol but it’s the best option) and water in order to create a glue like paste, and then brush this paste onto Apple wood sticks (or other chews) and then attach some of his seed mix onto the paste.
how deep are the burrows? I'd recommend that, once you remove the soiled bedding, you get a little toilet for jeramy to go to the bathroom in. i find that they tend to train themselves to go there if you put the soiled bedding in with the litter. i've got one for my hamster and it makes cleaning his wee up much easier bc i don't have to mess up his burrows and stuff, and it doesn't smell. i use this and this litter :)
It is. It's hard to find online, but Petco and Pet Supplies Plus always seem to have it when I go in person. Its on Amazon, but it's $20 rather than it's typical in store price of like $10.
Here's a link to the exact one I use: Zoo Med ReptiSand, 10 Pounds, Desert White https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002DIZKC/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_apa_i_wpGdFbEKGDEBF
The first cage is definitely not appropriate. Hamsters need one large surface area, not height. Not to mention that some may start climbing the bars, and falling can pose a risk for injury. It's also extremely tiny in terms of surface area, only 56 x 24cm (again, height does not count because they don't need it), which is just over 1300sq cm (around 208sq in). Syrian hamsters need well over 600sq in, so it's definitely not appropriate. If you don't have rabbits, you're better off returning the cage to get your money back, that thing is expensive!
For a smidge of the price of that cage you can get a huge plastic bin to convert into a "cage". Sure, it won't look as sleek, but it's cheap and a very quick fix if you want something sleeker but need more time. As I mentioned in my other comment, a 40gal breeder tank is the absolute minimum I'd consider (I'm mentioning breeder tanks because they tend to be shorter, so the volume spreads over more suface area instead of height). VanillaHamHam on Youtube has a great video on how to DIY a very sleek cage for hamsters from IKEA materials, you can look up the "Linnmon cage DIY" and it's well under half of the price of the rabbit cage you linked. If you're not into DIYs, ready-made enclosures may be available, and I think the best I've seen is from the Living World Green Eco Habitat (such as this one). The larger, the better.
Ovo rooms and other similar contraptions (think Habitrail/Critter trail) are absolutely not appropriate since they're way too tiny.
We use this one for our Syrian and our quite happy with it. He can drink easily from it, but I don’t need to worry he will fall in and drown. It’s a bit of a pain to clean, but we use a flexible bottle brush. We also put it on top of a plastic rimmed soap dish so in case it tips or spills it doesn’t get the bedding wet.
Sand baths are super easy! Just get a large container, or section off a large part of the enclosure (great place to put the wheel in!! you dont have to worry about uneven bedding giving the wheel a hard time turning or the wheel sinking) and fill it with play sand. You can use anything from a lasagna dish to a cardboard or buy one online. This is the one I’m currently using. I got 50 pounds of play sand for $2.50 at Home Depot (: there are also hamster safe reptile sand . Make sure the sand has no added calcium or coloring and it’s good to go (: adding a hide is also highly recommend!! it gives extra privacy and security.
I use this TP-Link Tapo C200 WLAN IP Kamera Überwachungskamera (Linsenschwenkung- und Neigung, 1080p-Auflösung, 2-Wege-Audio, Nachtsicht zu 9m, bis zu 128 GB lokaler Speicher auf SIM Karte) Weiß https://www.amazon.de/dp/B07XLML2YS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_Z9FD1G4ECN6XQRSZ0C38
I’m pretty happy with it so I decided to use two of it. 🙈
I have this carrier. Fill it with paper bedding, a small hideout and a water bottle. Use bedding from his cage so he has a familiar scent. Put some food in too.
I also recommend you watch plenty of videos on properly caring for a hamster and providing the best quality of life. It's so great that you're seeking information on proper care. I think those of us that do care about doing the right thing for our pets need to pass that view along so that it becomes the normal thing for everyone.
I also echo the thought that properly caring for a hamster so that it is healthy and happy takes commitment and more time than you probably expect.
A lot has already been mentioned, so I just have one other thing to mention
Hamsters get bored with seeing the same thing in their enclosure every day, so it's good to get multiple items to switch things up regularly. Keep a few of their favorite things for them, but switch out the rest. Hide food for them to find. Hide things to chew, like shelled peanuts, walnuts, or Whimzees.
I'm always looking for new things. Today I got an item I purchased from Amazon, it was only $4.00 (in the U.S). It's a bit small for Syrians, but if you leave the ladder out it should be okay. It's a great size for dwarfs and robos though.
I have a niteangel super silent wheel, it doesn't attach to the side (I'm not sure if any wheel that's big enough would really be strong enough to stick) but it has a good solid base stand and is completely quietThe one with the solid color back and the ridges on the track though, the full acrylic one has no ridges and would be easy for them to slip
edit: https://www.amazon.com/Niteangel-Super-Silent-Hamster-Exercise-Wheels/dp/B08FC8QFVZ/ref=sr_1_5?dchild found the one I have, the large is 11 inches and a good size
Thanks a lot! Unfortunately I'm not really good at building stuff and don't have my parent close. Thought, I kept in mind what you said about bars so I looked for a cage without any bars accessible and, after some recommandations, found this one.
The comments were pretty positives and the size is bigger than the Alaska cage so I think it can be a good fit!
Thanks again for your advices
Amazon.com sells the Niteangel silent wheel! I live in Canada and started off with the one you have linked here, but I found that it needed constant adjustment and wasn't actually that quiet. While you have to order the Niteangel one though American Amazon, it's still much quieter, and actually cheaper! I'll link it down below :)

Yes, if he's sneezing more with that bedding, I would get rid of it. I would recommend using something that is not wood-based to see if it helps his sneezing. Here is the Kaytee bedding that I like to use. In the meantime, try giving him lots of toilet paper (just a bunch of toilet paper) as bedding until you're able to get the new bedding. Make sure to give him lots, and rip it up a little so he can still burrow and play! If his sneezing continues and/or if he still seems unwell otherwise (lethargic, watery eyes, etc.), take him to a vet ASAP.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08792DHBT/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
hope that helps! it is quite large though, so you might need to take that into account with your cage
There’s actually a brand of sand you don’t have to bake (: it’s called Reptisand is usually used for lizards and such but is safe for hamsters! You can buy it here
I was in the exact same boat as you. I purchased a pair of anvil secateurs and they work great. I get a nice clean cut without bits flying everywhere. These are the ones I'm using.
As for glue, yes Elmer's glue is safe as well as hot glue if you want to speed things up.
Niteangel Multi-Chamber Hamster House Maze: - Multi-Room Hideouts & Tunnel Exploring Toys for Hamster Gerbils Mice Lemmings https://www.amazon.com/dp/B083S6W3MG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_S8PYVHRTSQYSR4TKJG3E?psc=1
Wanted to add this in case you couldn’t find it.
I don't know about your hamster, but mine disregarded it and jumped until the tubes were put in. Eventually as an added measure I'm going to get those wood bridge things (https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B077PXX4XF/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_.cAcGbHB6YBMP) and attached them to her cage as a fence. She really only uses the top floor for her sand bath and to hide food in the little house but I'd rather be safe.
A sandbath if you dont have one and one of those bendy tunnels(that probably doesn’t make sense so here’s a link- https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DFYQMSW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_BFAJFb4MPZW40 ) I normally run the tunnel under the bedding or mostly under the bedding. Kiwi likes to put some of her food there :)
Oh no need to worry about stability! All upwards standing wheels are fine when it comes to that. I have an 11inch Trixie wheel (around $20) and a 12 inch All Living Things exercise wheel (around $18) and they both work great! These are actually super cheep for their size, and I'd definitely recommend these brands. I wouldn't recommend the Kaytee silent spinner since they have a tendency to break. If you're looking for a bit of a quieter option I'd recommend the Trixie brand (I believe they have an 8 inch option, which is a great size for a dwarf, you'll also have to order online if you're in the US or Canada), and if you don't care about noise then probably go for the comfort wheel (it's wider, so easier to run on, as well as it's cheeper). I can personally sleep with the noise, as I found a way to lessen how loud it is, but I know some people who can't sleep with noise so it's up to you.
Here's some links:

Seasoned sunflower seeds are not good for hamster so I would suggest getting plain sunflower seeds. These are a bag of plain sunflower seeds that I got from Amazon for my hamster and he loves these.
as long as your hamster enclosure is cleaned and it’s not an unsanitary living environment his chances at developing wet tail is slightly decreased. make sure that his water bottle or water dish hasn’t spilt as maybe it got on him, or if he is peeing in his hide then that could be one.
try getting him a sand bath! sand baths are super good for a hamsters coat as it protects their fur and skin, and my hamster likes to go to the bathroom in his.
i think a sand bath would be a great option for you as you can also monitor if he’s going to the bathroom in his burrow and or the sand box and maybe it’ll indicate weather or not this is a more serious issue.
(also i recommend ReptiSand) as it’s less dusty, unlike chinchilla sand, and it’s usually trusted by more hamster owners including myself. Here’s the amazon link to reptisand if you would like to check it out :)
also best of luck with your hammy, give him some time before interacting with him if he’s new so he can get used to the environment and your house acclimation is generally 3 days to maybe 1 week. and sometimes longer. :)
also, if your hamster is bored she’s more likely to stay in her hide more often. if you have lots of hides, a wheel, and generally a wide, long enclosure for her. it could result in her being active. keep in mind hamsters are nocturnal, they’re more likely to play during the night and sleep all day.
Edit: she* sorry 😭
Yeah sure thing!
Here is what I used for my baby rats! Super big and cheap. He shouldn’t chew through as long as you keep an eye on him, and the sides are super smooth so no climbing!
I have this Niteangel cage and I like it a lot. My girl seems really happy in it. The large works out to about 930 sq in inside.
Sometimes you can change the resistance on the back of the wheel. Check out the screw piece thingy and see if it’s adjustable. You can also get a “closed” wheel with guards on the side, like this
Ditch the ball, use it as a hideout within her cage
I bought a playpen on amazon - avoid the ones with mesh - hamsters are escape artists lol
the playpen is a little too large for my boy, despite being a larger syrian hamster, he tends to get quite restless in it unless there's lots of places to hide within it. best thing about the playpen is that it can be made into smaller shapes by folding the sides down. he uses it as a square shape. I'd put down an old clean towel or something for a soft texture just for their comfort.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B09X2MQKWX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 this is the one I bought :)
Well...kind of.
It's been scientifically proven that any enclosure size won't prevent bar biting or stress behaviours, sadly. Golden hamsters have been seen gnawing on bars of enclosures of 1500+ square inches.
Of course those behaviours were less common and less prominent, but they were nonetheless present.
There isn't any scientific proof regarding a bare minimum, as far as I know, so I just stick with my country's bare minimum (I live in Italy). Those are 523 sq inches for dwarves and 775 sq inches for syrians. And in my opinion, those measures work fine as MINIMUMS, but there will always be signs of stress in syrians.
Here's source (got this from hamstersociety.sg):
I did fit a 12 inch in the detolf! Idk if you are in the uk but this wheel is so good, it’s 8.7 inches but you can get bigger sizes for a bit more money! Mbox Hamster Exercise Wheel -... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08K39HC1X?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I’d bought this about 2 months ago, I made an effort to sand down any areas that looked quite sharp.
This is a good sand option that's safe for them https://www.amazon.com/Niteangel-Hamster-Desert-Dust-Bath-Litter/dp/B0923RJ8PJ?ref_=ast_sto_dp - Niteangel in general has some good stuff.
As everyone else has said, the sand might be the culprit. However, as someone else pointed out, these small prey animals are very good at hiding illness/weakness. Especially from pet stores, there's always a chance the terrible breeding practices and handling of them as babies could just cause issues. For example, as much as I hate buying from pet stores, I have no ethical breeders near me so I don't have many options (and they're still living creatures I want to rescue/care for either way, I don't buy extras from pet stores, just the hammies).
It's a gamble with pet stores because animal mills suck! It might be nothing that you did, but it could possibly be the sand.
They're fragile creatures so don't beat yourself up too much, however I will say, everywhere you read about sand baths for hamsters, every single time I've read/googled anything about it, they always say NO CALCIUM. So, I would recommend just searching every product you want to put in their tank. They're sensitive little guys. Before introducing any sort of product just do some quick research, there's tons of info out there.
The actual tread should be flat and not have bumps, as bumps, lines etc. on the tread can make it difficult for them to run and has even been known to cause injury.
If anything, it may aggravate the issues they have with a plastic tread.
A wooden wheel is still very much an option - all you would need to do is give it a coat of Plastikote or similar non-toxic and animal friendly varnish/enamel/sealant to prevent the pee from seeping into the wheel.
I’ve converted to bowls. Way easier to clean and more ergonomic for the hamsters to drink out of. I use a very tiny baking ramekin that are about 2 inches across. Small enough so they won’t drown in it, and heavy enough so they can’t tip it over. I got mine at a local Ace store, but these are comparable: https://www.amazon.com/HAOTOP-Mini-Ramekins-Porcelain-Souffle/dp/B096SND4L3/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?adgrpid=58832305169&gclid=Cj0KCQjw0JiXBhCFARIsAOSAKqC3LdwGR3fldw2OIEi4ZfXdF2fPwPCwATokoC0BfXYi6WfiIzdbNRMaAlItEALw_wcB&hvadid=557254298838&hvdev...
i used to use kaytee clean and cozy but my hamster would never stop sneezing :( ive switched to pet select bedding and it works wonders. you can actually save if you buy in bulk!!
It’s the Niteangel MDF Aspen Bigger World.
I use Oxbow Pure Comfort. They have a white version and a "natural" version but idk what the natural one is made of. I only use the white one, and it has been great for me for over a year now. It's soft-- feels like tissue ripped up. There is some dust but it's nothing crazy-- every bedding I've tried has some amount of dust.
Like millets for birds! Here's an example!
thanks so much!! the moss is for nesting & enrichment, i heard it would be good to offer multiple types of substrates 🥰
i would def change the water minimally every 2 days (most likely daily); it was definitely a strange choice but all the bottles were notorious for leaking hehe, if it doesn’t work well i’ll definitely replace it with a normal bowl! it looks like this, so it’s like a funny combination of a water bottle and a bowl :-) https://www.chewy.com/lixit-reptile-terrarium-waterer-16-oz/dp/264613?utm_source=google-product&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=%7Bcampaignid%7D&utm_content=Lixit&utm_term=%7Bkeyword%7D
& i really appreciate the toilet paper trick, i’ll be sure to give that a shot! thank you so much again 🤎
use a playpen! you can get plastic ones on amazon, you build them yourself (which is super easy), so you can adjust the size of it to the amount of space that you have. loads of hamster owners use them, they are great for providing a safe space for exercise. put his wheel and the toys/accessories from his cage in there. transport cages should really only be used for trips outside of your home, as they can be quite stressful for the hamster!
link to a good playpen: https://www.amazon.com/SONGMICS-Hamsters-Exercise-Transparent-ULPC02W/dp/B07FQ411ZH
if you have the money id recommend this enclosure only modifications i made was i didnt use the included floors and i rotated the front section so the door would be on top rather than bottom should keep out the cat too
best thing you can do is get some wet tail drops put it in water following the directions and drip feeding it to him directly. this helped my hamster when she had diarrhea she was shaking and looked really sickly and this helped her recover quickly like in a day
Sadly, pet store employees usually don't have the education needed to own the animals they sale, they will recommend you anything you'll buy to make profit off of you, please don't take any advice from them and do your own research.
Like the other person said, people will recommend Mazuri rat and mouse diet but you also do want to mix it with a high variety seed mix something like Sunburst gourmet blend, the reason you will need both is because sunburst is very high in variety which is something you do 100% want for any hamster, but it doesn't offer enough protein so that's why people like to mix it in with mazuri, pellets like oxbow aren't healthy for hamsters, and offer no variety. If you have access to those mixes I would highly recommend switching it out!
We've had solid luck with our little guy playing with this......
https://www.chewy.com/trixie-strategy-flip-board-small-pet/dp/348038
He's able to work all of the features except for the lever, after day 1. Definitely enjoys hunting for the food, and working a little bit to get it.
heres the camera i use! ive also heard that this camera works well too!
Silent runner, it’s fairly quiet. My lil guy loved it. It’s only $44 cad https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B019RH7PPE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_0GYT3ZG71AXVR73HMFGS
You sound like a great hamster owner! I love it when owners are able to see their mistakes and improve!!
This is what I would do.
Aim for 15+ inches of bedding throughout the entire enclosure. It’s the standard in German hamster care (correct me if I’m wrong).
Use different substrates for enrichment (calcium-free reptile sand, coco fibre, cork granules, pillow moss sold in pet stores are all safe). It’s also important to note that dwarfs need 1/3 of their enclosure to be sand (not sure if this is true for ALL dwarfs, I’ve mainly researched in syrian care as of right now). Do this by placing a platform on stilts, and then whatever is holding the sand on top. That way, bedding is still throughout the entire enclosure for your little hamster to burrow in.
For more enrichment, get some puzzle toys! Anything that makes the hamster work trying to get food is great and stimulating.
Also, a 6-multi chamber hide is a must: https://www.amazon.com/Niteangel-6-Chamber-Hamster-House-Maze/dp/B083HXCC3W
They’re another standard in German hamster care. The hide resembles what a hamsters’ burrow would look like in the wild, with a space for them to hoard, to use as a toilet, and to nest if they so please.
Avoid any softwood materials like these: https://brunetteonamission.com/beauty/different-types-of-fake-nails/
They usually have dangerous nails in them, can leak resin, etc.
As for food, you can scatter feed your hamsters’ main diet! This aids in enrichment and is what they would do in the wild. I also believe this is what Victoria Raechel does.
Grapevine and bamboo are both safe to use in your enclosure. You can also use hamster-safe forages and leaves, as well as sprays for more enrichment. A busy enclosure will make your hamster feel safe.
There’s definitely more, but that’s some of the basics to help you! I’m sure your hamster is very lucky to have you.
this is the Bedding but don't buy the 100 liters because that one has chunks in it of bedding that are hard as a rock but the others seem normal and soft as usual
it's 945 sqr inches and the enclosure is this one but I installed the front face of it upside down for obvious reasons and I removed the levels completely and the wood that held those in place
The best thing to do is to scatter feed, scatter only about 1 tablespoon of food all around the enclosure, you only need to do this every other day, this will reduce picky eaters. If you are feeding too much or feeding in a bowl, they will most likely take the pieces they want and leave the ones they don't want, and when you keep changing out the food they won't get to eat the rest of it. Scatter feeding is also very enriching for them, because they have to search for the food like they would in the wild, and they have to work for it. If you have access to these food mixes and aren't using them, I would recommend switching to sunburst gourmet blend but this doesn't offer enough protein so you'll have to mix it with mazuri rat and mouse diet, so far with all of my hamsters when I scatter feed them with this mix every other day, they seem to be taking all of it!
could just buy one of these sand bath

My dwarf also refused to use his wheel so I kept it in the cage but also got him once of these spinning things and he loves it! He’ll run on it for hours and hours!
Heres a link to one I found on amazon: Spinning thing
Do you think this wheel would be okay? I’d rather keep the toys wooden so it feels more natural for her
this is the PawHut 3 tier cage with the platform removed. you can find it on Amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/PawHut-Hamster-Exercise-Lockable-Opening/dp/B08L5MDZRB/ref=pd_lpo_2?pd_rd_i=B08L5MDZRB&psc=1
it is just over 1000 square inches. I would recommend removing the platforms like the person in this video has.
side note, when you set up please press your hamster's bedding down! it doesn't hold burrows as well and isn't an accurate depth measurement if it's not compressed.
I saw you were going to research into other cages, idk if it is really affordable but if its in budget I really recommend this from NiteAngel. https://www.amazon.com/Niteangel-Bigger-World-Terrarium-inches/dp/B09466PKD1?ref_=ast_sto_dp&th=1&psc=1
Imo the large size is worth the money, You could have a lot of success housing a Syrian in it and I just love how you have multiple viewing angles and the sloped down lid makes it very easy to access and serve the cage. Which makes a diff to me, I did a variation of the Linnmon hack for my hamster on larger tabletops and It is very tall allowing for a lot of bedding, but the down side is since I come in from the very top. I struggle a lot with cleaning the cage there haha. But I do love being able to give my hammy lots of bedding. But the sloped opening seems to be a lot better for that type of thing!
There are actually water bottles with little stands made to be used in barless enclosures! They even have a tiny hide and a place for snacks, my hamsters all loved them ^^ https://www.amazon.it/dp/B0787V1GFY/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_7Q1P0373YEJ44P3NZGVB

There’s a few possibilities here for him itching. The first possibility being that his skin may just be a little dry as of the moment but that may solve itself out soon enough. The second possibility that I can think of is that he does look like he could be a little bit greasy. He looks like he is a Syrian hamster so I would get him a large sand bath I will put a link below for one that works really well for my long-haired Syrian that I have at home. Do you know what kind of bedding was in the tank prior to you getting him? If it is a different brand compared to the one that you were using right now for him it could be a very minor allergy where he just gets a little itchy. But I wouldn’t be too concerned about it until he starts to scratch the same spot consistently and you noticed hair loss. He said you cleaned everything and you gave them all new stuff so it is highly unlikely that it could be mites of some sort but I would definitely just keep a little lookout just in case just got a look at them and make sure there’s no bugs crawling around here in there they would be very small but other than that that’s the only reason and I wouldn’t be to concerned as of the moment just keep an eye on him. 😊
Sand bath that I use for my boys. Similar to this one. You can also take a large glass dish and use that

i found these:
they are white so i painted them different colours with a mixture of white tempera paint and food colouring (100% hamster safe)… my hammy has no interest in them but they look cute!
I cannot recommend this one enough! The only thing I can hear, if I focus really hard, is a pitter-patter of tiny paws
Yeah I’m from the UK. You can buy this from Amazon, Asda and Argos. The measurements on Amazon are wrong, I think it’s 105 cm x 55 cm
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Really-Useful-160LG-WHTR-CCB-Wheeled-Trunk/dp/B074RDX1DV
I just rolled with it last night, my little ham seemed really comfortable and was starting to hoard food into the little cave I put in there.
I have a sand bath that I’ve been using a few times a week. I’m trying to figure out how to put it in there permanently but didn’t want to over crowd the space. Would you just roll with it and put it in anywhere it fits? I’m planning on either buying this one, or building something similar when I move to a new state in a few months (recent development), and was going to go ham on building a lot of levels and mazes. Would’ve done it already but my tools are in storage from when I downsized from a house to an apartment.
Oh and yes, I have a lid I cut a huge hole in with 1/4” mesh, and a massive roll of that mesh left over if anyone needs some lol.
I use Full cheeks classic white with some orchard grass hay
I dont have any recommendations on how to stop this honestly i have had quite a few hamsters and havent ever seen this however I highly recommend this wheel its about $30 and I just replaced all of my hamsters' wheels with theese and they love them and they are completely silent
I get reptisand with no added dyes or calcium. It was about $10 at my local pet store, but they're typically cheaper than Amazon. Amazon has it for a bit more
There really aren't many ready to go cages in the US that are a suitable size, especially for dwarf hamsters. A 40 gallon breeder tank is good though. And the niteangel cage is good but expensive. I wouldn't get anything smaller than the medium since the small is the bare minimum size. https://www.amazon.com/Niteangel-Bigger-World-Terrarium-Burlywood/dp/B088NJQMZ9/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_sspa?crid=2QCMGUFATR3P3&keywords=niteangel%2Bhamster%2Bcage&qid=1647962218&sprefix=niteang%2Caps%2C163&sr=8-1-spons&ufe=app_do%3Aamz...
Is use the niteangel water bottle with stand. It’s adjustable so for any height and it’s amazing
I tried to do some research and this was all I could find
https://www.chewy.com/brytin-silver-surfer-chinchilla/dp/263128
Niteangel 13.8'' Chinchilla Wheel - Quiet & Sturdy Exercise Wheel for Chinchilla or Other Similar-Sized Pets https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08V4XLGW4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_769V52F8P3RKXEFCMCZ1

They’re unfortunately quite pricey. Other than that it looks like Lauren and petsmart have some 12” wheels which is better than nothing. I don’t understand why 12” wheels can be around $20 but add a few more inches and suddenly they all have to be $100. It’s ridiculous.
This one here is the one I got. I highly recommend it! I stuck it in a top corner of his cage where I could see food bowl, water dish, and 2 of his burrow entrances. It records when it detects movement :3 so even if he just comes out for a drink, I know he's okay
yeah here’s the link. all i did was trace the tube on the screen then cut it out with pliers. then i taped the sharp edges with multiple layers of duck tape
The vet used a special dye to show that his eyeball was scratched. I BELIEVE it was caused by one of these grass balls. When they are chewed up they get fairly prickly. So I removed those after. The vet gave some eyedrops (forgot the name) and told me to apply the drops 4x a day, and after 1-2 weeks he should be fine. Two weeks passed. A month passed. His eye did not really get much better. I asked a vet friend of mine and she told me I probably just got unlucky and there won't be a way to save that eye anymore. He keeps the eye closed like 99% of the time. It looks like it has shrunk at this point and probably doesn't function. But it's fine-- Latte's behavior did not change at all since this happened.
Here's another video of him sometime after his "recovery"
I use this sandbath for my Syrian- it’s rather large
https://www.amazon.com/Niteangel-Small-Animal-Sand-Bath-Box/dp/B08FJDKV4T
And for the sand I use reptisand, which is an all natural sand that contains no dyes or calcium. You can usually find it at a local petstore in the US
Thank you!! This is the Amazon listing: Small Animal Carrier Bag, Portable Guinea Pig Carrier for 2, Hamster Cage, Bird Rat Guinea Pig Squirrel Carrier https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09JMT1YNR/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_NPSFP93Y1Y5VRXW1S1FA?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I considered using that. Though I read in some forums that they wear off so I turned to Mod Podge (not the best choice either. I saw this one:
https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00UCL5UL6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_K83PAVS26WSWCC481140
With the layers of Mod Podge that I have added, I’m not sure if mineral oil could still penetrate through (or maybe I’m wrong). Maybe the wax could probably sit on top of it though. Please correct me if I’m wrong.
I had the same question about my hamster chewing the zip tie on her playpen...and, although no one said it was OK for her to snack on, a kind person pointed out that hamsters can separate tiny millet seeds from grains of sand and have incredible control of their mouths and tongue. So probably OK.
I use one of these with the terrarium tank, and it would work great with a bin cage, too. The metal looks like "huh??", until you realize it's aluminum and can be folded and molded to hang at any height and accommodate any wall width. And moved and re-molded as needed.
Small Animal Chew Guard and Bottle Holder https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002Z1656/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_DTY33QVQKPDSSJYK221G
I've been using this, it's fairly sturdy and has 2 metal bearings that are basically silent

No problem! Again, such an awesome enclosure!!
You could also get this Niteangel climbing/ladder toy for the two bridges you’re using as bridges. 😊

Someone else already answered, but it's the NiteAngel Bigger World enclosure 😊 I love it - easy to assemble, sturdier than it looks.
Small Pet Select Unbleached White Paper Bedding, 178 L (JMWB) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B079C88GM4/ref=cm_sw_r_apanp_zBLv6fdfmmOIF
This is the bedding I use, its a huge bale so shop around if you need to spend less. Its not as fluffy as kaytee bedding but still absorbent and soft, might get less stuck in your guys hair
I used terrarium spaghum moss, pillow moss also works! If you are on FB the group hamstercare101 has some great photos pinned that list everything from the best food brands to the best hamster safe enrichment options! I don’t know how to share photos in comments unfortunately but this is what I used!
This one is the Silent Spinner 12”, I got mine from Chewy but I can’t find the listing now. Here it is on Amazon though
Hmm looks fine to me 🤣
Okay I tried to be funny there. Hard to tell from the video I guess but I think it's too fine. Personally I use zoomed reptisand.
It's expensive, but I find that the longer shreds often sold for snakes work well. I blended that with some of the walmart stuff which is much finer and it held burrows very well. I'm testing Kaytee+Paper mix to see what that does, but I definitely recommend the snake stuff. Honestly, I buy more from the Reptile isles than the "hamster" isles in shoppes.
Thank you. I read on the hamster hide out forum that it was safe? I've always used it, and it didnt have these tiny stones before. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Versele-Laga-Chinchilla-Bath-Sand-KG/dp/B001ILTJ84

Not every candle is tall, OP specified he was lighting "a small candle", I assumed they were talking about these ones.
My favourite is the niteangel wheel! It comes in different sizes and several colours. Niteangel Super-Silent Hamster Exercise Wheels - Quiet Spinner Hamster Running Wheels with Adjustable Stand for Hamsters Gerbils Mice Or Other Small Animals https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08FC97R1F/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_E8GCSBPAEREXPJ73GMMN?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
This is the wheel I have
Trixie 61011 Rotating Ferris Wheel Hamsters, Plastic, ø28 cm, Assortment: Random Colors https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00365P9NY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_1SQYCM8NKMW3ME8QS3VT?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I put the wheel in first and placed bedding around it, weighted down with the stones , made sure the area around the wheel has shallow bedding but other areas are deep because I used the boxes to give her space to burrow.
Millet sprays are just like stems with seeds on they’re found in most bird sections of pet shops. There are multiple different ones to get like millet sprays, oat sprays, wheat sprays, flaxseed sprays and more. Here are some examples.
I would recommend putting a thermometer inside the enclosure so you know exactly how cold it’s getting for your hamster. I use this one-
ThermoPro TP50 Digital Hygrometer Indoor Thermometer Room Thermometer and Humidity Gauge with Temperature Humidity Monitor https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01H1R0K68/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_MX4184188PPNV1S5RMG5
I have one in each of my hamsters’ tanks. I used Command ‘Picture Hanging Strips’ to adhere them. I made sure to place them at a height where my hamsters can’t reach them.
