A user recently posted photos from the book Bushido: Legacies of the Japanese Tattoo. The photos are copyrighted images and I don't think it's right to have them posted like that here. These are images that I made myself that detail the same information that user posted. It's a great book and I recommend picking it up here. Sorry for being a stickler.
Part of a history of Japanese tattooing called Tattoos as Punishment
I found a book called "Bushido" which was fascinating. Tonnes of cool images and the author took the time to set out background and history quite a bit.

Yo, I didn’t realize this book is worth that much now 😩
I got my fundoshi off Ebay: Packs of 3. I also tried the thong and briefs underwear. Thongs were the best for me by far.
When I wore it, it was not sexy; but it did the trick.

If you are looking for Buddhism imagery check out the Tibetan book of the dead. It has a section for showing the art work associated with all the deities and of course a description of them. I unfortunately don't know how they are used in traditional irezumi. The imagery in it is fantastic.

There’s a very reasonable costing one that I have I’ll find the link and edit this to show you which one. I like that a lot.
Edit: and have this one and like it - but there’s another one I bought if amazon for about 35 dollars is that is great- I’m not seeing it listed now Of Brigands and Bravery: Kuniyoshi’s Heroes of the Suikoden https://www.amazon.com/dp/907482255X/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_H3DVEb2BGNVQ6

I wear these a lot because they are cheap, durable and they block the sun well. Downside: they get super stanky and they stain easily.
I also like the button up fishing types from rei and Eddie bauer.
Also: before a certain time, there were zero tigers in Japan. Artists were known to draw from stuffed pelts and modeled by house cats. Here’s some good reference of this look. tiger bookp
Nice! I have these 2 very good information on the meanings as well as the history of tattooing in Japan

The most common advice for this type of question is usually to ask the artist that you want to do the work what they recommend. There are also a couple books that folks often recommend.
Japanese Tattoos by Yori Moriarty
Japanese Tattoos by Brian Ashcraft
Additionally, if you have a main theme or idea, say you want a snake on your arm, search this subreddit for "snake pairings" or similar key words because a lot of these sorts of questions have been asked before. Hope that helps!
It's an old story but it's in "KWAIDAN: Stories and Studies of Strange Things" By Lafcadio Hearn - the story is called "JIU-ROKU-ZAKURA"
I would say it's Japanese, but not traditional. I'd like a kirin, not a dragon. But the kirin I want is a synthesis of shiba inu & the forest spirit from Princess Mononoke. I'd also like an incorporation of elemental symbology based on the buta/Paisley which can be a leaf/feather/water drop/flame as part of the design. I've been compiling a ton of reference images at https://www.tumblr.com/blog/jivehonkeytattoo
The stuff you posted was very enlightening from the artists perspective. Any questions you have or advice you can offer is appreciated. Thinking it out helps me get closer to my ultimate desired image.
I read this book on Japanese Tattoos that went over a lot of the basics on the different motifs/meanings. It was very helpful for planning out my next sleeve. I'm going neo traditional/ Japanese blackwork but I still wanted to follow the traditional irezumi motifs/rules
Turns out squids aren't traditionally found in irezumi (octopuses are, though). I find that surprising since I've had some delicious ika (squid) sushi in Tokyo.

Matt Montleon absolutely loved the idea of depicting the squid giving itself some ink.

I suggested because it's one of my 2-year-old son's favorite bedtime stories (it's about how the inspired graffiti that shows up in the protagonist's house is "actually" due to midnight oceanic intruders):

Hi Lads,
A friend of mine , a tattoo artist in Belgium recommended me this book, and I recommend it too! Japanese tattoos from Ashcraft Brian & Hor Tuttle. ISBN : 9784805313510. You can find it here alongside reviews that basically says that this books is a must have : https://www.amazon.com/dp/480531351X/ref=cm_sw_r_awdo_navT_g_4AVCVS2399N90QES47DX
If you are interested in the culture, the history, the design and the meaning and the Japanese tattoo, for me this one this one is a must have alongside the Moriarty one.
I have this book here: https://www.amazon.ca/Japanese-Tattoos-Meanings-Shapes-Motifs/dp/8416851964/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=japanese+tattoo&qid=1624568296&sr=8-1
It has quite a few stories about some personas (warriors being some of them).
Bushido: legacies of the Japanese tattoo is an interesting read. There's been a few other times it's been asked, I think a quick search could bring those threads up
I can't really say much that other's haven't already, but if you are interested in traditions when it comes to what matches what and placement etc. I can recommend a good entry level (price wise) book called Bushido: Legacies of the Japanese Tattoo (link here to Amazon (UK)):
I got a disposable fundoshi from my artist that I've been reusing. Can't find any on Amazon, but maybe just get a real one?
