Absolutely the best book on Voicings I ever read.
Takes you from shell voicings to Rootless left hand voicings to quartal voicings.
I will post some of it here soon.
Slightly tangential, but this post reminded me of a site I used to visit by a saxophonist, Jen Kuang-Chang. Had all kinds of really interesting articles dissecting the playing of Charlie Parker and John Coltrane, and loads of PDFs of really good sounding bebop licks, transposed into every key. The site's been out of commission for a while now ,unfortunately. You can still browse parts of it on the wayback machine, though. I've been tempted to re-upload the PDFs I've saved and share them here, but haven't because of copyright reasons, and I don't want to get in trouble.
I suppose if anyone's interested they can message me and I can send them what I have.
I wrote this method book with someone like you, who has some basic music knowledge but no experience improvising, in mind. https://www.amazon.com/Chord-Tone-Improvisation-Practical-Approaching/dp/1726770346
Perfect Ear for Android. It has exercises for the vast majority of aural skills. Unlocking the exercises costs a few bucks, but it's superb value for money.
Hey, I'm a little late to the party, but this is exactly what I'm doing with my app Piano Practice Assistant for Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pianopracticeassistant.ppa
It's a variation on standard spaced repetition software that takes into account the structure of music (sections and subsections) and some other research on music practice. I also realize how individualized music practice needs to be so there's a lot of flexibility. I've personally found it's very effective, but your mileage may vary, of course. There's more info on the app and some general articles about practicing music at my website http://pianopracticeassistant.com/
Edit: I should mention that the spacing effect is most useful for memorizing, not learning, according to this research. My app does have other features useful for learning, like "interleaved" or "mixed" practice.
