The first time I ever had Absinthe was about 13 years ago, before it was legalized in the states. A guy I knew from high school had made a batch from scratch (yes, used a still to do it). Not sure if that is how the stuff was supposed to taste, but it was terrible. We did the slotted spoon, sugar and water thing, as well as trying the flamed method. I didn't notice and effects other than that it made me go from drunk to hammered very quickly. I've been scared away from it because of this experience.

This does remind me of an episode of Three Sheets where Zane goes into an absinthe bar, and can't find a single person who actually drinks the stuff, including the bar staff. This is probably worth a watch if you are interested in the green fairy.
