> My question is should I add a heater and small sponge filter or will the heat shock him now since he’s acclimated to room temp water for so long?
If you're worried you could get an adjustable heater and slowly increase the temperature of the water over the course of a week. It's super worth it to spend the couple extra bucks on an adjustable heater anyways.
For nano aquariums I personally love this heater: https://aquaforestaquarium.com/collections/heaters/products/copy-of-archaea-mini-aquarium-heater-25w-ultra-slim
It's really tiny and the heating adjustment is along the wire so you don't have to stick your hands in the tank.
As for the sponge filter, you should be able to just start using it. It might take the betta some getting used to. What sponge filter were you considering? You might consider one like this that has media for good bacteria growth: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HSCB9GC/ref=psdc_2975472011_t5_B00KZJYC9G
> So another question is how long is their lifespan in a larger heater tank?
In ideal conditions like 5 or 6 years, but you can get up to 10 if you get lucky. They do fine in non-ideal environments and are extremely adaptable animals, it's just that they're more susceptible to diseases in colder waters. Never forget that your personal experiences are anecdotal evidence! Giving your fish an optimal environment will make both of you happier and isn't all that expensive if you spend the time to plan things out.
I have 2 ten gallons. If I had the room, I would go bigger. The bigger tank gives you greater dilution. And a lot of the little nano fish are easily affected by changes. I'd love a 20 long.
But, yes, a 10 gallon is fine. Suggest that if you want a neo shrimp colony you'd better have a ton of plant cover like carpet unless youhave only Otocinlus (which really need more space than a 10). If it fits in the fishes mouth they will/can eat it and shrimplet newborns are the size of a dash mark.
I LOVE the dwarf cories, i have habrosus. pygmaus are more mid-water swimmers.
BEST thing? Get Rachel O'Leary's book 101 Nano Fish on Amazon. It is a bible for nano fish. Worth every penny! https://www.amazon.com/Best-Freshwater-Nano-Species-Invertebrates/dp/0982026250/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1525672581&sr=8-1&keywords=rachel+o%27leary I've got 10 nano tanks and they are all ten gal and under, but I WISH I had a 20 long, so if you have the room go with a bigger tank and smaller fish :)
Its acrylic but i got it for a great price around black friday on Amazon
Tetra LED Cube Shaped 3 Gallon Aquarium with Pedestal Base https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008CA7W7E/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Eu-MAb7SYPXMB
Hey thanks! I got them off of Amazon. There are a bunch of similar ones in varying sizes and colors. I bought two sets. Some of them are glued together with Cyanoacrylate super glue. I also jammed bits of a marimo ball that I tore apart into a few of them.
https://www.amazon.com/Saim-Aquarium-Ceramic-Shelter-Ornament/dp/B01LYNR9HO/
I don't have the money to buy anything expensive, but when I buy, I do research so that I buy the best quality I can find and afford. I have a lot of Nicrews from my early days. But, they didn't do great for plants. Then I found the Aquaneats. Great inexpensive lights! For my 20 gallon long, I have a the full spectrum 30 inch I linked. I also have this one that isn't FS. I have 5 of these in different lengths and some FS and some not. I like them ALL. (don't forget to look at the length details to get the right one). The FS willobvi be bettr for stems and reds.
Of course!! I am happy to help!
So some tanks actually come with a lid and some don’t. Mine came with a lid and I use it because my cat is an idiot but a lot of people don’t and it’s fine. So that’s up to your personal preference.
I like the plant choices! Right now I’m just letting my Dwarf baby tears fully carpet before I try putting anything else in. But I’m pretty sure I’ll grab some java moss. I love how it looks. Floaters are good, but you just want to make sure they don’t starve the plants underneath. I don’t think that should be too much of an issue unless you’re going for some very sun hungry plants.
So that filter in particular and most sponge filters are totally safe for shrimp and it has a flow rate adjustment lever so you can set it super low and ease into it at higher settings until you’re more comfortable with it. You can also opt in for a bigger filter like this. It has more surface area for biofilm to grow for shrimp and it also has less of that suction that a smaller sponge filter would have. It’s also dirt cheap and fits snugly into a corner.
I think an inch is a general consensus here for substrate and you can go up from there for aesthetics. You can also have a bottom layer of gravel then a top layer of mineral rich soil. It gets tricky with layers though. I wouldn’t do it myself but some people are all for the challenge.
12 gallon long. I got the light installed today. I'll have a 256gph canister filter underneath. I have a DIY inline aquarium heater in the loop. On the left the water will come in through a lily spin outflow. The return will have a coarse foam pre-filter behind the big rock.
The area behind the rock wall will be about .75" higher than the rest. So lower on left and front middle. I'll have ADA AS Powder capped with med. Black Diamond Blasting Sand.
I'll have a mix of Pygmy Chain Sword and Dwarf Sagittaria on the low areas. I'll have various Bucephalandra on the cholla bowl there. Behind that, some shorter, bushy stem. In between the big rocks, some Alternanthera reineckii 'Mini'. I'll have Anubias Nana Petite in the big crack on the face of the big rock. Some Liverwort on the top of the big rock. I'll have pennywort going up the big rocks, and floating on the right back side and behind the big rock.
Stocking with Habrosus Cory's and Ember tetras. Some Amano's and Ramshorn snails.
I am not sure if I will leave it without a background, use a black background, or a frosted translucent one and a mood light behind... Thoughts?
This book isn’t nano specific, but I keep a 3 gallons and a 10 gallon tank, and this book has been super helpful
I also really like the aquarium co-op website blog. I linked a specific article here about 5 gallon stocking ideas, but they pretty much always give solid advice about everything.
I wasn't a fan of the stock light so I use this one from Amazon.
It has two settings, I keep it on the bright setting just a couple inches from the surface of the water. Sometimes at night I put it on the dim setting. I also have it on a timer and run it for a total of 8 hours a day, split into 2 4-hour photoperiods with 2 hours of "off" time in between.
As far as ferts go, I dose a half-dose of Flourish and Flourish Trace with every water change, because my water is extremely nutrient poor. I also add a few pieces of crushed coral every once in a while to my filter, as well as a partial Indian Almond leaf whenever the old one disintegrates.
I have to dose with Seachem Equilibrium to bump up the GH because mine is 1 out of the tap.
I'll likely poke some small chunks of flourish tabs into the substrate in a month or two.
Thanks! It’s a Fluval flora 30l (7.9gal) absolute steak of a tank, comes with an internal filter with spray bar,( had no problems with it and it’s running like a dream, keep the water super clear) and also full spectrum led lighting. It’s 30 x 30 x 35 cm
Here’s an amazon link where I bought it ; Fluval Flora Aquatic Plants Aquarium Kit https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004AJCE0Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_nzM-CbR7A34R0
If you’re on a budget, Nicrew never disappoints. I have a few of these in planted bowls: NICREW Fish Tank Clip on Light, Clamp Aquarium Light with White and Blue LEDs https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07QQ9K3R9/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_CeWhFbVK5T65S
I like to use a small HOB like this, they are super cheap and work well.
I don't think it's the heat. It's just what acrylic does. ¯\(ツ)/¯
I had a pretty nice looking acrylic lid set up that did exactly what yours did. You could consider bracing the edges with more acrylic on top, but I thought that would be too ugly. Glass, too finicky. I went with a custom window screen. I got this clear mesh netting to replace the window screen with, and have been pretty happy. I had three Amano carpet surf before I got this in place; none since.
I bought it a long time ago and second hand, but I think it's the same (but smaller) https://www.amazon.fr/Kit-Aqua-Wiha-Zebrano-Gris/dp/B077XL9HPZ
I use a 5.5watts led bulb (3 colors temperature presets 2700/4000/6500) but I mainly use it at 6500k.
I didn’t put one in until today. I’m using a super tiny sponge filter with a control valve. It’s not entirely great looking. I am thinking about getting some Jungle Val and layering it in the back to hide the heater and filter. Pawfly Aquarium Nano Bio Sponge... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B098S7RTFX?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I have the same filter, and it's great. I have a different pump from Bedee, but the other looks similar. I'll say that if you want higher aeration, the Bedee pump comes with an air stone that can fit inside the nano filter, and there's a review showing the mods they made to the filter.
Get a small sponge filter and ceramic air pump. You can probably get both for $20. I use a this one.

I've been using this one
AREPK 10 Gallon Fish Tank Cleaner and Aquarium Water Changer Siphon with a Thinner Water Tubing. Perfect for Cleaning Small Fish Tanks, Gravel Vacuum for Aquarium Kit (Grey) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08ZMR3PN2/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_08AMXZVB4Y0VGKQ1X31R?psc=1
And it works really well. The tube is narrower than a regular gravel vacuum, so it creates a little better suction. It also has a slotted sort of cap that goes on to prevent large items from sucking into it. I've also put a piece of pantyhose over it when I was worried about sucking up the baby shrimp. It's the first one I've used with a primer bulb and that alone would make me buy another. It's super convenient is the perfect size for a nanotank.
Ghost shrimp can just die off. They are raised in poor water conditions. They are sold as live feeder food. It will be hard to say why it died. Also test strips are not the most reliable way to test your water.

Anything but Duckweed [just don't].
And get this thing https://www.amazon.com/Zoo-Med-Floating-Betta-Log/dp/B0027ITKBS
I've got a 20 heavily planted lot to do and plenty to flare at...where's the fish? In da log.
Good luck with Franklin.
Also, here's a good nano pump that works well with 15gal tanks, it clips to the back and is virtually silent. Just get a sponge filter rated for 20gal and you're good to go
Try a test strip kit with metals on it like this.
ULTIMATE 14-in-1 Aquarium Test Kit with Trace Heavy Metals | 50 Water Testing Strips for Fresh-Water or Salt-Water Aquarium, Fish-Tank, Reef & Pond | Alkalinity, pH, Nitrate, Carbonate Hardness & More https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07F36YC4T/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_7X3CA0TRAGNJWRM03XTN?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Ooh long, sorry. Maybe you have a heavy metal in the tank that's killing everyone.
I put a pre-filter in front of it for the fry. I have CO2 in my tanks too and the way it works is just gets the protein skim from the top. Same brand, the glass helps to hide it when looking into the tank.
JARDLI Mini Lily Pipe Inflow with Surface Skimmer for Nano Aquarium https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09GLN5BGC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_V9702511RZJHDHJNCKWN?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I’ll make it easy for you. I’m looking to get this one too. But I bought the set with the in/out takes already for $45.
JARDLI Lily Pipe Outflow Spin for Plants Aquarium https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01K40M49A/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_XDJB11DTYPKYTCW0C65S?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
My starter tank was preassembled and came with these small, almost invisible glass lid brackets (seen on the 4th and 6th pics here). I don't remember the brand on the packaging, I think it was Asian lettering, Korean or Chinese.
I wasn't able to find them on Amazon, but I really like how low-key and see-through the tabs are and wanted to share something that really works for me.
I believe plants are:
Anubias congenesis
Alternanthera of some sort
Cryptocoryne wendtii
I think one of the grassy plants is Lilaeopsis, not sure on the other
Few bits of frogbit
The sand I used is Pettex White Quartz, the leftmost rock is slate, the middle rock is Seiryu, and to the right is bogwood.
I used this kind of sponge filters in 2.5 gal tanks, had no problem with surface film. An outflow should be set in the middle of water level.
I used these but have a slightly different filter.

I've got a Nicrew light on my bigger tank, and while I have no complaints there, they wouldn't fit under my canopy.
I've since found LED plant light strips that might work. I notice the colour graph to be quite different from aquarium specific lights, maybe someone can chime in with regards to that LED strip lights
I have 2 of these in different sizes but can't remember the brand name of them. Works like a charm.

Gotcha. Hygger is a really good light, it's what I use on my 20 gallon and is around $40: link It's got loads of settings too, and is brighter than the daylight through my window. Just pick your tank width. Nicrew is a tad cheaper (coat and quality-wise), and then if you're looking for better quality there's a massive price jump to the fluval plant lights.
You can buy off-brand CO2 for a lot cheaper. If you have a paintball shop in your area I would check that out for inexpensive CO2.
The one I’m looking at is this one. Fluval Mini Pressurized CO2 Kit, CO2 Supplement for Planted Aquariums, 20 grams, A7540 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0049RL3H4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_5C8ACHG302MVBZXYNG9W?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I read some reviews on it online and seems to work great for 10 gallons and below. Also I like the idea that you don’t have to turn on the CO2 all the time, just when you want to fill the diffuser which should be good for the day for a nano tank.
Lominie Aquarium Led Light, Asta F20 Nano 6500K Dimmable Planted Tank Light with Gooseneck for Plant Freshwater Aquarium Fish Tank Refugium (F20 Freshwater) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B075D9N56X/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_R0P53TBGWXT778Q1B22J?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
It’s great, first one I’ve had that shimmers. I used to have a fluval plant nano on the tank but needed more height
They are. I bought this tubing and this kit to make it happen. It's like putting together legos and super easy to work with.

Hey! Fish jumping is a concern. Luckily the Ember tetras don't seem to be jumpers, and the Corydoras Habrosus could jump if they tried. :)
Here is the light.. The biggest one for that tank. I have all three sizes though for different tanks. Great light.
Ya, it seems like it's not bright enough for the medium light plants I want. Thanks!
I wonder if this would be able to mount well enough to the bowl. Considering the angle of the top... Thoughts?
The thing with most nano tank heaters, they are preset wattage and are NOT adjustable. I'd want an adjustable heater myself. I'd go for this one as it has a small footprint and the manufacturer makes good heaters.
You don't necessarily even need a filter if it's heavily planted, but you can't go wrong with the good 'ol Mignon 60 https://www.amazon.com/AZOO-AZ13097-Mignon-Filter-60/dp/B005VEWCMO
I love this friggin thing. So tiny, super quiet, great flow, and already has a prefilter sponge on it!

As far as lighting, what's your budget? 'Cause I'm in love with the Current Satellite Pro +, but not everyone wants to spend $150 + on a light---and for 12 gallons, you'd probably be better suited to getting something cheaper I'd think, because that light would be mega overkill for a shallow 12-gallon.
Personally I just stuck a cheap submersible NICREW light on to the top of the tank. Grabbed it off of Amazon.
Not the most elegant solution -- the light pops under the water line a little and there is some condensation -- but it gets the job done.
I have the same tank (UNS 5N right?) You don't want to take up valuable space with an internal filter when you only have 4 gallons to start with. I have this filter for both of my 5N tanks and it works great
It’s a sponge they make for the filter on the Edge. I got the idea to use them on the Flex filter outlet from a Fluval video on YouTube.
Link here: Fluval EDGE Pre-Filter Sponge
Thanks! I actually got it off of Amazon, believe it or not. (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M70IUI1/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) Only took about two weeks to spread, and it's been thickening out since.
No CO2, I use a Finnex Planted+ light with a 12 on 12 off schedule.
RCS are dwarf shrimp. Don't know what cbs are.
Sponge filter/airpump is best for shrimp yes. Get a small sponge on amazon with a weighted bottom.
Cobalt Aquatics 5 watt heater on Amazon. Best choice. I did the research. As I said above, pay attention to be sure it doesn't get too high in spring and fall when the seasons change and I unplug in summer.
Everything is from amazon!

I saw what I think is the same one in amazon and some ppl mentioned is weak about 5watts.
I also found this one way more $$

But it was $30 when I bought it a few months ago
I have used the following two heaters for several of my 5-10 gallon Betta tanks, and both have worked very well for a few years. I have more expensive heaters on our larger SW and FW tanks (75, 150 gallons with Fluval E series, Hydor, Cobalt), but these inexpensive ones have been great for the little tanks. :)
My first choice: Tetra HT Submersible Aquarium Heater With Electronic Thermostat
My second choice: Marina Submersible Heater for Aquarium, Mini
Hope one of these might work for you!
Got it on Amazon! Comes with the light too. The only thing is there's no switch for the light, so if it's plugged in, it's on. I have it plugged into a timer. Overall though it's very sleek. Very happy with it.

Hmmmm maybe these would work? supposedly these fit 3mm glass
I had that canister and it was defective ., ended up replacing with eheim classic (40g) for 12 g long. I found it to be a little underpowered honestly and think it would be good for yours - I also use this super affordable sun sun canister on a 10g and like it very much . Short tanks are tough for co2 for that reason, totally understandable. What I recomend is a finer diffuser such as This one
Place it low, under the bulkheads for flow.
It shouldn't be very much co2 at all for the 5 gallon, and most micro bubbles SHOULD dissipate before the surface tension breaks.
Check your variable PH With This to make sure enough co2 is being dissolved and replace the solution about once a week.
Edit:
In addition, make sure to only run co2 30 to 60 minutes before lights come on until about an hour before the lights go off. Plants don't grow at night.
Oh! Also, let's see a picture of this tank so we can save it later for a program pic!

It's an awesome little tank!
Thoughts between these two substrates? Also do you put gravel or anything else on top?
It's just a ~1 gallon bowl I had that I thought looked cool.
Yes, I'm using a Deep Blue Biomaxx Nano filter and a 50W Aqueon Preset heater. They're both way overkill for a bowl this small, but I have the heater on a control circuit of its own to keep from boiling the shrimps if it fails, and the filter is baffled to slow the outflow.
I don't know what lily pipes are and I would think a canister is more than you really need.
I have a few 5.5 gal tanks, two have an Aqueon 10 Quietflow Hang on Back filter, probably too much flow for your Betta if it's a male. But, another one has Deep Blue Nano, which can be adjusted and seems to work well for my tiny Clown Killies that don't like too much flow. Check it out: https://www.amazon.com/Deep-Blue-Professional-ADB88700-Aquarium/dp/B00BUFTI6Q
I have three 2.5 gallons with sponge filters and small nano HOBs as well. Some have one some have both. I can tell you that the shrimp really like the sponge filters. They are a source of grazing material for the shrimp and ensure no shrimplets get sucked up...even with a prefilter sponge, if the sponge isn't fine enough it might still suck them to it.
I use the Aquatop Caf 10 sponge filters as they are sooo tiny and take up such little space. Aquatop and with the Tetra Whisper pump, it is sooo quiet.
This [HOB] is great too (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HV2ZKEU/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1)
I'm using Marina Slim S10 HOB filter on 3 gal half-moon tank, Azoo Mignon 60 (and another brand of the same filter) on 1gal and 2.5 gal long, and Tom internal filter in 1-1.5 gal cubes, with filter media cage removed and filter floss added to this micro pump, flow pointed upward.
Adding Matten filter to a shrimp tank (Poret foam, flow 2.5x tank volume/hr) is a good idea, additional grazing area. Do image search for this and you will see how it looks like. I have Azoo on one short side of the 2.5 gal long tank, and Matten filter on the opposite short side. This, a lot of java moss and feeding sustained more than 100 shrimplets until they grew and had to be moved elsewhere.

I bought mine on Amazon as tissue culture plants, they come as very small plantlets a plastic cup growing in a gel. All you do is rinse off the gel, pick apart the starts and plant them. They grow super fast and as the are grown in a lab they are pest free(no snails!). S.repens, Bronze crypt
This stuff is Mr Aqua soil. They sell small bags of it which is nice. I didn't use the whole bag but I probably should've put more in.

I'm thinking about replacing it at some point with this because it's got some scratches on the front.

Target and Walmart have cheap offerings as well.
Cube:

I use this for my nano tank. It is a Tunze powerhead and it is tiny.
here is the combo: Mr. Aqua Mini Bookshelf Aquarium Tank Set https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00D0S3TRU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_S.OpxbRSBZKWF
I'd check for the tank alone because this combo is kinda $$$. I changed out the light to a clip light by the same brand because the one in this kit was too op. The HOB is good but it's an Asian brand and I can't find the replacement filters locally. Otherwise it's a great little tank.
