So I made this a few days ago just to get comfortable with Docker, learning the ropes etc., and it turned out to be pretty cool - thinking to myself: why not share it, maybe someone can use it or even contribute improvements of their own.
For those that have no clue what this is about: Docker is basically an application (and a framework) to quickly create and run virtual machines (containers) with usually only one specific purpose. This Dockerfile can be used to create a container for the purpose of compiling and running the NyanCoin daemon just by typing two commands.
There are thousands of pre-made docker containers, from database servers and webservers to complete suites of bulletin boards, helpdesk/troubleshooting portals or just plain virtual linux instances - all of them ready to go with just a few keystrokes. And NyanCoind is now one of them. :3
If you or /u/KojoSlayer are looking for a cheap VPS, LowEndBox might be a blog worth checking out. But be wary, occasionally some of the presented hosts make a cash-grab with offers that are literally 'too good to be true' and run.
A very good cloud-based VPS provider that I have personally used for years is DigitalOcean; never had any issues with them and the performance is above what you'd expect for $5/month. Shameless referral link: here ^"Everyone ^you ^refer ^gets ^$10 ^in ^credit. ^Once ^they’ve ^spent ^$25 ^with ^us, ^you'll ^get ^$25."
Yep, totally understood.
Cool tool; thanks!
Awesome, that would be much appreciated. Apparently there's a new final release candidate; that message should be a reasonable starting point. You might also get some useful information from searching about the bitcoin gitian build since it seems basically identical apart from swapping out the sources. See also my post on being stuck.
I would like Nyancoins to clearly support and document our build process and this is going to be central to that. I need to spend more time on it when I get the chance, but I'm short on time and energy right now.
As far as I'm concerned, this is the leading challenge to the community right now.
:-) Yeah, I miss stuff in here too sometimes. Which is rather surprising considering how small we still are lol.
Actually, rebasing on LTC looks very easy to me. What I did was get the diff between the closest LTC version and NYAN, and then I looked at applying it to the latest LTC. That is pretty straight-forward. My last step was just choosing the actual version to base on. And then I hit a bit of a roadblock and reacted badly...
But now I see that LTC is about ready to have a new version released, and so I'm going to get a setup to build that so I can contribute to the signature process (see this). Once the LTC release is finalized, then I plan to base the latest NYAN on that.
The main quirk so far that I saw was a reference to v0.8 having some type of block format change which would be a fork. So I'm going to have to research into the details of that to figure out what the implications are. But just making the latest version itself looks pretty straight-forward.
By comparison, the BTC version would definitely be more changes. All the changes of LTC would have to be applied, and finding that spot where LTC and BTC are almost the same is quite hard. I'm not exactly sure of the development process, whether they're starting from scratch regularly. If they're not, then there could be a fair amount of divergence which is hard to account for.
> NyanCoin archaeology
Go back to the year ago sort of range and you'll find a lot of cool stuff along those line. :-)
I agree with Coinaday mostly. Cryptocurrency in and of itself really isn't an investment in my opinion. Sure, there are ways to invest with crypto, like loans, "savings accounts", but these can be risky. I wouldn't put any real money into them. I think some of the big ways I made a little crypto was by offering services. I did a few accounting and other things online and was paid in crypto. It wasn't that much, but it became much more. There also used to be a lot of other ways to get crypto, like linkslap, or coinhive, but I feel like they are all disapearing. Anyways, if you want to hear more on my thoughts on investing via bitcoin, I did record a little piece on it.
And why not... Use another cool-crypto-tech to host your website ? Look at https://ipfs.io or protoschool (org ? Com ?) or search youtube for "host website ipfs". It's a distributed data network. It's like you self host the website, but in fact all the world self host it.
You can use it because the website won't change. Otherwise it would be impossible because the data is content adressed (instead of location adressing).
Your content will be accessible to the standard web thanks to the web bridge. Useful for those who don't run that fancy p2p software.
You can even use ENS for the domain name. Welcome to the decentralized web ! Have fun ! /u/coinaday
PS: I have personnaly tested it with some files and all worked well. I'm very excited about it !
Have you tried Notion? https://www.notion.so/
Can create a new account, organize things the way you like, create a public URL then let it persist forever. Bad for an active blog/managing subscriptions but good for an archive.
Be careful of scams guys, as soon as I posted this I got suspicious DM saying all I need to do is "validate" my metamask first.
Read the following and be alert:

Hahaha, that's awesome; I can definitely see the fit. Definitely a song for rises like this. Also, pretty sure we've had a tacocoin fan or two around here before; I imagine they'd like it too. I was going to check how taco was doing but coinmarketcap doesn't seem to know of any markets for it.
> Yeah, it's about time for a mobile wallet. I hadn't thought about that in a while. That was planned for between NYAN2 and NYAN3, which would be now. The idea is to adapt an LTC mobile wallet. I've never had a smart phone, so I just never think about that stuff much. If I get a stable job and place, I'll definitely consider working on that. It shouldn't be particularly hard; we just need someone to do the porting.
Well, if it helps, the whole reason why I even contacted Coinomi in the first place was because I didn't know wtf they were talking about to add support for another coin like Nyancoin. They give coding instructions in their FAQ on how to manually add the support on your own but I didn't understand how to do it... If you're interested in seeing their documentation on how to customize their existing thin wallet, the link is here. Since they said it just needs some changes in code to support for coins based off of existing architecture like with Bitcoin or Litecoin, maybe you can use this as reference for Nyancoin? Sorry, I don't know too much coding stuff here. I just know how to internet. :-P
>The icon in the repo is the closest to official. I'm not sure if this is it since it doesn't preview
I looked and it doesn't seem to be it? I guess I will look into contributing a logo if I can? I'm not a professionally trained artist or graphic designer so it'll take a while...
Wow, cool! floppy, do they still exist? why are you doing this? I did lfs once which sounds a little similar. It would be fun to do something like that on a raspberry PI. 🤔
QR codes are cool because easy to read by a computer from paper. For the NYANOTES, you could use zbar http://zbar.sourceforge.net/ or another software to decode them, just feed the software with the NYANOTE, you'll get the private key.
Here's my profile but don't give me nyans, I already earn(ed) my tips. =) Haven't used this site much but could be fun if there's a little contest.
edit: Speaking of NYAN-for-code, how about starting a bounty tracker? $10 in NYAN to fix a bug or add a feature - or to host a service/website (second nyanchain in case one goes down?) - could attract some more devs.
Then find a copy of From Worst to First somewhere. It should be relatively cheap and easy to find one way or another, but it's a great book.
Life is all about how we deal with setbacks. Are we going to dwell on them, or are we going to use them as energy to drive us toward success?
Nyancoins' revival has this as a central theme. We start with a failure deliberately and build it into a success. If we can do that, then anyone should be able to learn from what we've done to build a success regardless of where they start.
The challenges and setbacks aren't the end. They are the handicap for how awesome we are. ;-)
xposted here in case we've got readers here who don't read that sub. I think it's important to think about these things. If the bitcoin fanatics were right and everything else is pointless, then of course what we're doing here would be included in that pointlessness.
I do not believe that. I believe there are obvious reasons why altcoins also matter. And there are also a lot less obvious reasons which I don't talk about there. I mean, how could the ineffable spirit of NYAN be described adequately? The nyan that can be named is not the eternal nyan, after all.
It's fun to have our own little piece of the world to work on. It's fun to have our own scorecard of how strong we are. And some of the most powerful things in the world have been done just for fun (amazon affiliate link).
That's a hilariously awesome username. I've actually been reading the Predators Ball which has been pretty inspirational to me as well. I mean, they're back in the 80s and $10 million is nothing to them. Really gives some perspective on how tiny cryptocurrencies are at this point.
