Link to the survival tabs. I've tried them. I still keep a bunch in my BOBs. They taste like compressed powdered milk with a bit of vanilla flavor (if I recall correctly). They weren't that bad and I could certainly eat them in a survival situation. I also store the very long shelf life items like Mountain House meals and MREs for bug-in situations. The tabs are just to have in every pack to ensure there's some calories in there.
I think what you are looking for is these:

Having the right things stored away might help open her eyes it's not so taboo.
I'll give you try examples.
Stove https://www.walmart.com/ip/Coleman-Camp-Bistro-1-Burner-Butane-Camp-Stove/34761205
Yeah. Hit up any big box store or sporting goods store to pick something up.
And if you're limited on space or convince, check out solid fuel cooking. Esbit is the proper brand, but there are lots of cheap yet comparable alternatives. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01B3NRAUA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_sDIiFbWTVVKW0
Don't waste your money with harbor freight unless it's tarps, car garage or other items. I've bought this for what you are looking for, but the 100watt panel.
Renogy 60 Watt 12 Volt Monocrystalline Foldable Solar Suitcase https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JX3XKFC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_ZouwybVDE8VSQ
Stove, Walmart had a butane single burner stove for $19 and a can last 30-45 min depending on the setting. They have the Colman in store. I get the gas from the Chinese store, 4 pack for like $6
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Gas-One-Portable-Butane-Gas-Stove-W-case/152360889
I keep the Datrex water pouches in our GHB/BOB’s in our cars. They have never leaked and I read before buying them that they were okay to store in a car.
Datrex Emergency Water Packet 4.227 oz - 3 Day/72 Hour Supply (18 Packs), White https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B08ZL8DD5X/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_5FA83QNNNW5X01PDSSV4
Idk what specifically you're looking for, but I suggest using a locking carbiner. Plenty sturdy and you can clip it to my bag, belt loop, water bottle, etc to keep your hands free. I have another on my water bottle too so I can clip it or hang it pretty much anywhere.
I bought these and have used them quite roughly for many years without a problem:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GNJ2C1T/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_TDD67MS8WXAJANE5BKEZ
I have one of these: it is actually not terribly loud, I use it to run my house when we get hurricanes. I built a shed box with 5 100lb propane tanks in it and a Gentent so I can use it in the rain. It runs like a champ! https://www.amazon.com/DuroMax-XP13000EH-Portable-Propane-Generator/dp/B07G7GGFV6/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=3W3HYEFYNW10W&dchild=1&keywords=duromax+xp13000eh&qid=1623073254&sprefix=duromax%2Caps%2C224&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEyUEEwWEVNVlpTRElTJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMDYwOTk0M0I4Qk9UM1FGTVhNWSZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwOTg2MDcxOTlLV09HTjNBOVQ5JndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

Also of consideration is what buckets you're putting the food stuffs into. I don't necessarily use "food safe" 5 gallon buckets, but I do put my loose dry goods in food safe liner bags like these.
I've been using a good machete I purchased off amazon that fits within your budget. I've put it to the test and cut down trees, split firewood, hit it on plenty of rocks. Keep it sharp and it will server you well. It can be found here. You'll have to find your own sheath though.

Hi u/Material_Idea_4848. This is the one that I'm thinking of getting, Dyna-Glo WK11C8 Indoor Kerosene Convection Heater, 10500 BTU, at Amazon.
I have not been able to find any gas station that sells kerosene (k1). I recently found out that kerosene heaters are illegal in Massachusetts. So, that might be why. From what I understand based on about a week's worth of research, they are safe as long as they're used correctly.
There is talk about possible grid failures. So, I'm still considering getting a kerosene heater just in case.
Fuel would be a problem to obtain though, of this heater only accepts K1 or D1. Department stores around here sell K1 that's about $15 per gallon. A bit expensive.
This book is kinda dated, meaning it won’t have the newest tech discussed in it, but it is a great primer on the basics of all kinds of radios. It includes antenna construction, power supplies, etc. you can DDG or Google “survival communications” to link some more specifics, especially in the world of inexpensive imported radios. the book
tap water imo shod be secondary to purified but hey they dont sell these things for nothing https://www.amazon.com/AquaPod-Kit-2-0-Emergency-Container/dp/B00W2BQRG6/ref=sr\_1\_2\_mod\_primary\_new?keywords=water+bob&qid=1667346470&qu=eyJxc2MiOiIzLjIwIiwicXNhIjoiMS44OSIsInFzcCI6IjEuNTUifQ%3D%3D&sbo=RZvfv%2F%2FHxDF%2BO5021pAnSA...
A rocket stove is a good option, you can DIY them pretty cheaply or purchase if you'd rather: https://www.amazon.com/Ironclad-Supply-Rocket-Stove-Preparedness/dp/B097S6WXR3/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=1I5LPUG09D95K&keywords=rocket+stove&qid=1666287344&qu=eyJxc2MiOiI2LjEyIiwicXNhIjoiNS42NiIsInFzcCI6IjUuMDkifQ%3D%3D&sprefix=rocket+stove%2Caps%2C88&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1
They're good because they tend to use fuel efficiently.
I also have a propane camp stove which I typically use for pressure canning, but we could use it for cooking and even have a griddle plate for it.
Don't listen to them. There are. But it's probably take a while and not be just for phones. You'd probably have good luck looking for a solar/hand crank radio/flashlight with a USB port. This was a quick Google. I can't say anything about the brand...but search around for hand crank solar radio or power banks.
I have 4 of these for emergency's.
The brand is true to their warranty (in my experience) and they do not overstate how much energy is stored (like nearly everyone else); for those reasons I highly recommend them.
I recently bought potassium iodide powder instead of pills: https://www.amazon.com/Potassium-Iodide-grams-Crystals-Powder/dp/B01JDYN2FS
That 100 gram bag will get you 769 standard doses of 130 milligrams, or
.13 grams. If you go this route, make sure you've got a scale that will
measure to the 1/100th of a gram. You can find one for under $20 online.
I strongly recommend a good set of calibration weights to go with it.
Cowboy hats might catch some flack for whatever reason but they are extremely practical imo plus they're fun af to wear haha. I keep mine next to my SHTF bag. Any wide brimmed hat is good tho for sure, these are cool too
The Shroomers Mushroom App is a great companion for mushroom picking and offers advanced features such as photo identification and offline mode.

Amazon has it $50 for 98ft
Thermal cooker.
It's essentially a thermos.
Bring your shit up to a boil ... close up in cooker .. let cook for several hours without fuel.
We use two of these for side dishes an a larger for main meal
Years of camp site use leads to a fuel consumption of about 1/8th traditional camp stoves/open fire cooking.
I would recommend:
Go for bulk items. Often times buying in bulk means cheaper per unit. An example would be Ramen by the case such as these and can be found in many stores.
While you have a can opener, these can often fail due to moving parts. As a backup I recommend a P-51
A lot of times people stock up on a lot of items, but what happens if you have to leave the area and can't take your items with you? You should look into portable water filters (filter straws), power generation (backpack solar panels), and food sources (such as MREs).
We haven’t actually used any except for the NIDO milk:
NIDO Fortificada Powdered Drink Mix - Dry Whole Milk Powder with Vitamins and Minerals - 56.4 Oz (3.52 LB) Canister https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00FRFRZF6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_4Y2J8SER7NJB7GP4M3AK).
I had read that it has the best taste of most dry milks. But I also have Country Fresh from Auguson Farms.
Augason Farms 5-90620 Country Fresh 100% Real Instant Nonfat Dry Milk, 1 lb, 13 oz. https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B009A48I1U/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Q98MVQ3DFVK777V3J9AG
I’ve gotten some good deals on the Auguson Farms by watching prices on Amazon.
I also keep Parmalat on hand, which I have used for cereal and things when I’ve run out of regular milk. One good thing for us is that we don’t just drink milk. I just cook with it and use for cereal. And I just get my cereal soggy and drain the milk from the spoon before eating. So raw taste isn’t too big of an issue.
Another thing to think about with the Nido and Country Fresh is that the Country Fresh dates are much longer than the Nido. Although I do have NIDO that expired in 2020 still. It has been fine.
> * about a 1.5 inch gap > * I measured about 40 ft well depth with about 10 feet of water.
So its 30 feet down to the surface of the water? There are some inexpensive pumps that might just barely work. The Rule IL200 can pump a 32 foot head but it will do that very slowly.
If you can widen the gap to 4 inches then I'd get the Ecoworthy Solar Well Pump. Its much more powerful and reliable.
These can be powered by a 12V SLA or LFP and a small solar setup.
I have the square Nesco dehydrator, and have been using it for about 7 years.I got it on a whim in Costco, it was cheap, and I needed it urgently, since my garden overproduced that year. I got it, thinking it will patch me up for the season, and until I save up for the big boy, Excalibur.
Fast forward to today, I never got an Excalibur. The Nesco outperformed every expectation I had. I grow vegetables and greens year round and I purchase stuff in bulk at farmer's markets. So it gets used ,if not daily, then weekly for sure, year round.
I have also dehydrated jerky in it, dog treats, full meals for camping and the regular fare, such as fruits, veggies, greens, etc.
I've been considering a case like this. It's a mobile make-up station. It has wheels, legs and power. I'd gut it because I don't need the mirror, little trays or globe lights. Anyway, the concept is cool. I'd prefer something more rugged. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07T33FJ29/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_KWAKGBB6ZEYAMKNXJYEA
AOTU Portable Camping Stoves Backpacking Stove with Piezo Ignition Stable Support Wind-Resistance Camp Stove for Outdoor Camping Hiking Cooking https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07NJYV3NP/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_2QDWD5PKQSK49SH8D90H
This is the cheapest stove I've found on Amazon. I paid $10 for mine. They work well.
Goggles and n95 mask should do the trick. If we're talking bio warfare, there's probably something else to look at.
Just picked up a few of these goggles https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07QKKX9VF - I watched a shootout of all of the safety glasses and these ones didn't fog up, didn't scratch, and could take some serious hits. Some of the reviews for them were talking about them working well for eye protection during fires and chemical situations. If you really needed to seal them up, duct tape.
I figure if your eyes and lungs are covered, you'll be pretty well off.
Thanks! Agreed that the all-in-one is a disaster recipe.
I'm seeing this one based on your description of the BigBlue foldable 28w: https://www.amazon.com/BigBlue-Foldable-Waterproof-SunPower-Cellphones/dp/B01EXWCPLC/
Last question is what battery did you end up with? Thanks again.
I was forbidden to get a barrel, so I'm jealous. I did pick up two of these 7 gallon jugs (https://www.amazon.com/Reliance-Products-Aqua-Tainer-Gallon-Container/dp/B07S6JXCYJ), which should get my small family through a few weeks. My delusion is if we're still in the house living off of reserve water for 2+ weeks in a major city, we should probably bug out.
Figure out where your water comes from. Call your local utility and ask.
Figure out if you have a water tower/community cistern, residential well, group well, etc.
If you are on a mechanical system with no buffer, then keeping your water on hand is a good idea.
If you have a tower or cistern, try to figure out its capacity, how many people draw from it, and Figure out how many hours you have - your elevation vs its elevation.
If you are on resirvour water from a lake and it's gravity fed, then as long as the rivers feeding the lake are going... you probably have water, dependant on what facility equipment is feeding the outbound water.
Buy something like this, fill it up when your spider senses tell you it's more than just a regular outage.
WaterBOB Bathtub Storage Emergency Drinking Water Container, Comes with Hand Pump, Disaster and Hurricane Survival, BPA-Free (100 Gallon) (1 Pack) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001AXLUX2/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_12K9YZSFTG49VMZKQA1V
I had that one: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B007H4VT7A
Unfortunately I could not make it work because the charger flat out refused to charge and the battery comes uncharged... Would you still recommend it?
https://www.amazon.com/BOLSIUS-Ivory-Tapered-Candles-Inch/dp/B01AVEODA2?th=1
Bout 30 dollars for 30 of them and each burns 8 hours.
This kind is the best I've ever used as far as clean-burning longevity (I got a 6 pack several months ago)
Its also good to note HAM radio is what FEMA and disaster relief agencies use during a disaster. In Puerto Rico with the entire Grid down one of the first phases was to set up Mobile repeater stations to get Comms up and running.
Radio really is the most reliable source of Comms in an emergency/disaster.
I am currently using HamRadioPrep.com to study for my civilian licenses because like a firearm these are the kind of equipment you should have some practice with before you ever actually need them. And as mentioned above it is illegal to transmit without a license (Yes the FCC can triangulate you) I have no idea how common that is to get in trouble so just use at you own risk lol
https://www.buytwowayradios.com/twr-shtfqrc.html The 3-3-3 plan is a universal Prepper/SHTF HAM radio procedure and i ordered 2 of these laminated sheets above to keep with my radios. These also come in handy remote hiking/camping as you can listen into NOAA weather alerts and talk to local authorities/SAR if Neccesary. You may be fine but there may be a search for a missing person or injured hiker elsewhere and you could possibly be the closest help.
I also bought a set of different DC power adapter plugs so I can charge my radios off my solar panel or power inverter. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KXBKHJZ/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_GRKAFZNF3MRDRZ52118T?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I understand the likelihood of needing it is slim but if you're into preparedness this is good to have on the list!
Yeah just a cheap disposable lighter. You could get a better quality refillable one if you like but I would prefer 5 gas refillable/disposables over 1 petrol one that needs flint refils, petrol dries out, have to carry a bottle of fuel with you etc.
Here’s 12 ‘clipper’ lighters for $12 https://www.amazon.com/Bundle-Original-Clipper-Lighters-Removable/dp/B00JH2P8BS iv had this brand work for literally years
The filter get rid of most everything. Thanks for the survivalist perspective, that's really where I'm coming from with all this.
Honestly, it just seems very difficult to HAVE clean drinking water without depending on society. Since the problems we are faced with (pollution) are mostly anthropomorphic, they require anthropomorphic solutions.
First step I'm going to attempt to get some kind laboratory water test done, if only to satiate my own curiosity. Otherwise I'm taking proactive measures, as I just purchased this APEC R/O filter for the countertop (portable and light, easy to install).
From my limited understanding of water purification you really have to worry about bacteria and viruses, so I think chlorination and boiling are great preliminary pretreatment. Then I guess you could use some kind of carbon filter or — if in the wild — some kind of sand/gravel/rock filter to remove the largest sediment. My biggest confusion comes from "how do you get the microscopic man-made chemical stuff out?". Cause local stream you source from most likely has everything from microplastics to industrial chemicals in it. How do you even begin to address something like that without fancy equipment?
Thanks for the advice! Testing is a good ideas + PPM meters. I actually found a potential solution that looks really promising (thanks /u/Intelligent-Will-255)! What do you think of this APEC over-the-counter R/O filter?
There's a product called nasal cease I use all the time. It's a bit pricey, but worth it.

Yep, you can transmit while charging the large battery. I'm running a standby test for this battery to see how long it will last.
This is the one I have:
Baofeng Battery BL-5 3800mAh Extended Battery Compatible with UV-5R BF-8HP UV-5RX3 RD-5R UV-5RTP UV-5R+, UV-5X3 Two Way Radios, Baofeng UV-5R Extended Battery by Mirkit Radio USA https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MNTJCGL/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_MXFNGVM4K8R3NJ9PWF4M?psc=1

I generally seal each bag 4 or 5 times with this one because not all the seals take, especially if there are any wrinkles at all. Next time I bag up stuff I am going to try using a household iron to see if it performs better. In theory, that should create one big seal instead of several 1/4" wide seals.

I just started reading that. It's a bit dated, but 1987 was the cold war with Russia and radiation hasn't changed much since then.
Assuming you mean finger lakes of upstate NY, I'd imagine you're in a good place. That's mostly farmland that's not likely to take a direct hit.
(By comparison, I'm in a city ten miles north of a large national guard base, and 20 miles south of a huge army base...I'm probably in a bad place)
You likely want an open mesh network with IP phones and Asterisk as the PBX.
https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/services/voip/asterisk
https://www.asterisk.org/get-started/
Ham operators have already done the above with their AREDN mesh networks.
Awesome, hit me up in DM and we’ll figure out a good time for a quick Zoom or Teams call, or I think Jitsi is a privacy based telemeeting site but I haven’t been able to talk anybody else into trying it because of course Zoom is so easy and nobody around me seems to care about privacy.
Hand crank NOAA radio recommendation: I've bought this particular multi-function radio (I've bought several of these for home, office, car, and for gifts) and can recommend it. I see they have a newer model now and it's currently selling for several dollars less.
In my camping kit I have cheap bic lighters that are 10+ years old and still work fine. I also have matches in a sealed container along with a magnesium ferro rod.
https://www.amazon.com/SE-CCH6-1GN-Green-Waterproof-Storage/dp/B00CPTXF24
None of these options has ever let me down.
Bic lighters.
They're cheap, durable, compact, omnipresent. They work when wet or have gone through the wash machine. You can put one in the glove box of your car and it will work years later. Everything else is just hobby/posturing/gadget worship.
You can get a lifetime supply for $50.
I do still think it's good to have some redundancy, like waterproof matches or something more gadget'y if you like.
So that is one of those igniters where you press a think, it clicks and makes a spark?
I've had those fail on me in grill lighters at least. Probably throw in a chemistry sparker and that might be hard to beat:

Amazon Mccormick culinary onion
Sorry about that.
Full disclosure, I don't really like raw onions - so my opinion is biased. For many uses I think dehydrated onions are superior. Soups and seasonings. But they are certainly not a replacement for raw onions.
Best to get the opinions of people that like all onions. But Fwiw, I think it's totally worth stocking dehydrated onions for many uses.
I have the presto https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008H2OELY. It works really well for fruit, but I've never tried meat. Alton brown has a whole episode of Good Eats where he builds one out of a box fan and furnace filters (I have never tried this as I got my dehydrator for free).
I would use food safe buckets with gamma seal lids. Cheaper than pelican, sturdy, meant for food and will seal air tight but easy to open. I use them with 1 or 2 of the desicate packets to keep air out.
https://www.amazon.com/Gallon-White-Bucket-Gamma-Seal/dp/B00FNSUS6U
I have found if you and “bulk” before what you are searching for on Amazon it helps find the stuff peppers might be looking for.

I have a ganzo that I bought and tossed in my car years ago. It seems pretty well made and won't break the bank.
Try this?

Something like this would work well for you: https://www.amazon.com/Coleman-Portable-Butane-Stove-Carrying/dp/B00FGPXVSM
You can get the fuel shipped to you too, which means it's certainly safe for storage: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08MV8LQDS/
Remember to always get CRV canisters, you don't want to have a cheap canister blowing up in your face.
I have some food grade buckets with lids that I bought from a restaurant supply place, check locally I am sure there are similar places in your town.
I also use these for which I prefer over the other
Always get a Carbonmonoxide alarm if you are burning anything indoors (or near windows).
From a science perspective, when you burn something you have a few things going on.
One, is you O2 is being consumed and combined with carbon from the fuel to make CO2. CO2 is not super bad, it is in the air all the time. Too much of it makes you feel drowsy or stuffy. Burning if there isn't enough oxygen will also make CO, which is bad. A low concentration of this can be fatal. It does something to your blood to make your red blood cells unable to transport oxygen.
https://www.amazon.com/Nighthawk-Operated-Monoxide-Digital-KN-COPP-3/dp/B00002N86A
I see the problem now. Not a lot of clearance when it's closed. How do you feel about running a necklace through the protective cover?

I have no problem piece-mealing something together.
I had this: Adventure Medical Kits Sportsman Series 300 Outdoor First Aid Kit - 127 Pieces https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07PJ4D3HY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabt1_AuuSFbPADHH0X
But I gave it to my sister years and years ago. Something very close anyways.
Neither my wife or I are medical professionals. I’m the only one of the two of us with any remotely formal training (US Army CLS.)
For the price point I would look at this Sportsman 4KW. It is reasonably priced and I have good experience with mine. Though I did get mine cheaper from home depot. It would run the device you have listed as well as a light or 2 and charge your cell phone with no issues.
I got a small kit a while ago that was in a plastic ammo can. Similar to this:
Patriot Pantry ZF_Ammo_1 1-Week Food Supply Ammo Can https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07F946R9C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabc_U5FPFbAQS57EZ
My son took some of it camping and said it did fine. It isn’t like homemade but will make a meal! I did get a super good deal on the one I got though. It was on Woot.com.
Just some really quick searches. Probably not the best quantity or size. But shows that both can be found on Amazon.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DD8BJ9V I use the 15A version of this one, but they also make a 25A
I have a solar setup with 8 lead-acid wired in series & parallel
They are both garbage. Get something good from suunto or Silva or victorinox Many actual militaries in the world contract with suunto or Silva and gave up on the engineer style compasses a generation or more ago. I like the Silva ranger type II. This style of compas has better naviagation features and the ability to shoot a more accurate bearing.
Here is a link for an inexpensive suunto that would probably be adequate: compass
Genetically Modified seeds are are sterile so the farmer has to go back to the seed company and buy new seeds rather than keep a small amount of his crop back for next season. This can be a big issue if your are a 3rd world farmer. Some GM corn has been made to very resistant to pesticides so farmers can spray much more pesticides on the crops. US farmer use 5 times the pesticides of UK farmers, and by the way both the GM seeds and the pesticide are sold by the same company. Genetically Modified Crops have been banned in the EU since 1989. Consumers believe that it must be safe if it is sold in supermarkets, but that is not always the case. The US Congress was going to pass a law so GMO food had to be labelled as such, but lobby groups like Monsanto talked them out of it.
I don't think anyone can say that corn sprayed with 5 times the amount of pesticide is better for you in any sense of the word. If you want the know more scientific detail I suggest you read Genetic Roulette and Seeds of Deception Both books are backed up with published scientific studies from all over the world.
Something like this will cook them much more efficiently.

Basically cold soak and then place on a small fire. Let it sit for a while longer and they're done with much smaller of a fire than would be required to boil over a campfire.
I know people suggested the Baofeng BF-F8HP (careful there are other versions that are cheaper, but very different), however if you want cheaper options with a lot less range (because they are not HAM/shortwave). Here are some options that I have been suggested in the past.
It's not made in America but hard to beat for the price. I have had one for over a year and haven't had any issues. It is definitely cheap, but seems reliable enough.
they should be hung up in your closed just laid over a hanger. I bought a bunch of these blanket hangers and use them for all such things.
I just bought an old REI mummy bag for cheap off ebay and i figured it would have lost a lot of loft from being used and compressed over the years. It would be my spare...but i was surprised to find it had been well taken care of.
I could see these or this stuff being worth a lot more than you'd pay for them right now.
I know you're not looking for a siphon but I'd recommend one of these for transferring gas. Just put it in the can shake up and down and you're good to go
This is a pretty good app. It's a little out of date, at least in my area. But you can zoom, screenshot and print easily
