Yeah, been a user of the gimp since it was first developed -- late 90's if I remember correctly. I'm on Linux though.
Can't say I'm very good at using it -- seems I almost always need to reference google about how to do this or that. My main tool over the years has been the ImageMagick suite which are mostly cli tools.

The problem is that the technical vocabulary of the medievals uses ordinary terms to mean unordinary things -- e.g., motion for change of any sort. I think it wouldn't hurt you to put off reading the primary sources until you've read about them. But then again, it's your life, and you only live once, so...
