An infection in his sinuses he had been fighting for about 6 months calcified into a tumor and spread into his skull and mouth. He was put down today.
:(
RIP Nuttly.
We went on a 10 day trip in June and I bought a couple of large pet food and water dispensers. I filled one with almonds from Costco and another one with a mix of chopped walnuts, pecans and roasted unsalted peanuts. We live in a condo complex and our balcony/ patio is covered and protected from rain, so the nuts were dry. We had even set up a motion detection camera and we could watch a live feed through the camera app on our phones. :) This set up worked out well for us. We're still continuing to use the dispensers even when we're home. This is the one I bought - https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07N1DF2FY/ref=cm_sw_r_u_apa_glt_fabc_J87BX6QGVZQ9JPYEQFTM
This one seems to be my favorite: https://www.amazon.com/North-American-Squirrels-Michael-Steele/dp/1588341003/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3HRE10MX3Q2T6&dchild=1&keywords=north+american+tree+squirrels&qid=1614897696&sprefix=north+american+tree+sq%2Caps%2C230&sr=8-1
It's scientific enough, because they really took their research seriously. It's a little dated, though, and I think before they had GPS to track the squirrels movements. They did tag them and they could visually identify the squirrels, though. And it's not the typical shit like, "squirrels hide their nuts and the ones they forget grow into trees!"
They're so cute. They don't like to get far from each other at that age. Here are my little ones eating sweetly in a row together. They never argued about food at all https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipN5qLmD2j-eYW70Cty0QmnDNH_cnoLN4CjF8a39sN1TaQoHEPOowvoYDIq6Bxo7qQ/photo/AF1QipPYCd3rQkHpQpvQkf1_vs7i9-jQmkkgzNZ-lUCh?key=dXNVem5FaTRwVjFKeXpEVnhBNXNjYkxLZEM4elVB
Here's what another mod said about her experience with head trauma in a squirrel, but it involves a fairly expensive product, so I wouldn't recommend it:
"It's likely to be neurological damage due to head injury. Supplementing with DHA (it's one of the omega 3 fatty acids) is quite effective for promoting recovery from traumatic brain injury. If you start soon, and since this guy is young, there is a very good chance that it will help him heal. This brand is the best and most pure DHA supplement. They filter the mercury out of the oil, which is important since this is extremely concentrated fish oil https://www.amazon.ca/Genuine-Health-O3MEGA-THINK/dp/B00CORLW7W/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1535256738&sr=8-3&keywords=omega+think
It's expensive, and there are cheaper brands, but this is the best. Do get a supplement that is high in DHA and add it into formula liberally while he is growing. That is his best and perhaps only hope for recovery."
ive been reading all sorts of suggestions here for my ‘squirrel cafe’, fruits & veggies etc & someone just posted theirs love herbs too! Gonna snip some bits off my plants to add to the corn-cobs (basil, rosemary, parsley & thyme) & see what they think 🤔
Oh ya have you tried corn? We just got a tiny ‘picnic table’ with a screw post on it (& can get bulk corncobs from most hardware or pet stores). Getting the drains clogged with whole corncobs would surely be worse 😂 but u can get a lil setup like this to secure it, so they hafta work at it a few kernels at a time (which makes for more fun squirrel watching too ;)
https://www.amazon.com/The-Squirrel-Shop-Picnic-Feeder/dp/B01MY0KLML
(search “squirrel table” theres a ton of funny options ;)

The one I always seem to grab and reference here is "North American Tree Squirrels." https://www.amazon.com/North-American-Squirrels-Michael-Steele/dp/1588341003/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=north+american+tree+squirrels&qid=1603255185&sr=8-2
It might be at your local library as well.
I'm looking through it right now, on the section about POPULATION ECOLOGY - Movements between populations, and it said this:
"The majority of dispersal movements occur in APril and May or July through October, as young of the year and yearlings move. In many popular accounts as well as the scientific literature, the late summer and autumn movements have taken on the quaint name of the "fall shuffle." Aggression also peaks at this time and may be influential in the decision to emigrate."
I hope your little guy didn't emigrate. Maybe he's searching around for a mate, and then will return when he remembers just how much he loved it there.
A small bowl of food with a water bowl next to it will keep the crows around. I use Zupreem bird food in a small ramekin with another full of water next to it and they love it.
hmm... we have that setup now too but no evil genius squirrel has tried to unscrew it! Could you screw a nut on the top end of it? er, the hardware nut not the yummy kind 😂 On ours the screw only goes up about 1/2-1/3 of the way in the cob... maybe you could cut the cobs in half to be able to get a topper over them, or might need to replace that part with a longer “post”?
Something like this- but just one BIG one:
https://www.amazon.com/Jetovo-Phillips-Chicago-Assortment-Scrapbook/dp/B07QVJN5X7
Its hard to sort out online, easier if u can see the options- so i bet if you can unscrew that lil screw-post & take it with you to home depot or whatever hardware store, they could help you find a better version u could rig some kinda “stopper” on top of! (Id take the original along with a corncob just to be sure the other options will fit the same)
You'd be surprised!
Check out Rally Squirrel (baseball not basketball, but hey): https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rally_Squirrel
He even got his own baseball card! https://www.amazon.com/Topps-Baseball-Squirrel-Cardinals-Returns/dp/B07HJBTBRT
I had been using a small glass bowl (with a rock in it since they kept putting their front paws on the rim and dumping it!) until I could get thr bird bath. It just came on Sunday!
I got this lil guy off amazon! The battery lasts about 10-14 days give or take depending on your settings! I'm impressed!
This is the one I picked up. Hoping it'll work, it doesn't mention mange on the page but it is the same medicine.
My guy keeps getting worse so I'm hoping it'll be soon enough for his fur to grow back and survive. If I could get him to sleep on a blanket or something I would but I don't think squirrels really get into that kind of thing lol.
Don’t worry, I’m well aware of the risks. I didn’t catch this in action, or I would’ve run outside to scare the cat off.
Do you know if they make water pistols specific for cats? Or should I just buy a super soaker style water gun? Or this?
Yes, of course! I just discovered this group recently, so many more posts of her will come :D She's even featured in my new Christmas ebook if you're interested (it's free on amazon currently https://www.amazon.com/Tobie-Friends-Christmas-AHG-Squirrel-ebook/dp/B08MVF5THR/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=tobie+%26+friends&qid=1606117137&sr=8-1)
lol I recently bought clickers on Amazon for this express purpose. Haven't tested them out yet, but will be excited to do so soon!
Ok, have you gotten all your information from that website that I shared with you? If you read through it all and follow it carefully, things will be fine.

One thing that the website doesn't mention is the importance of block. These are at an age when they are starting to eat solids. They should get a chunk of quality rodent block to teethe on in their bed, and block needs to be a staple for as long as they live with you. It will keep them healthy and prevent MBD.

I use Harlan Teklad 2018 It is a good quality block and is not very expensive. You can get it from Amazon in the US https://www.amazon.com/Envigo-Formerly-Harlan-Teklad-GROWTH/dp/B00N0EPSLO That should be the first solid food that they get, ideally.
Wait till they start sniffing them and inspecting them! I always laugh at the sniffing sounds. It’s also helpful for spotting squirrel problems. Our new black squirrel seems to have something wrong with her. She is very thin compared to the other squirrels and she is rapidly loosing fur. I am going to have to trap her and run her in to the wild life center ASAP. Here we go again. 😕
My daughter has this stuffed squirrel, not as cute as the real ones but he is adorable!
I can totally understand. I personally believe responsible domestication is far superior to life in the wild, as they live in constant stress by the threat of predators (especially in jungles, though even in parks they are liable to hawk and falcon attacks, etc). Also, pets can have vet assistance and wild animals only in rare cases where some orgs offer it to them. I know they are not allowed to be kept as pets in many countries and I understand the traffic of wild animals is cruel but in some cases having them around in a way which preserves their freedom is far more humane in my point of view.
Also, I believe they have spirituality as well and praying and mantras help them also evolve, especially when living close to good humans like you:-)
If you allow me, I'd like to suggest a book about the apprenticeship of a Taoist master who is known to teach a certain type of meditation which he says even wild animals practice (we call these techniques inner alchemy), which is often known as 'non mental' forms of meditatio.
His teaching is really special cause he shows that even animals can and do such non mental practices as well, and few spiritual schools teach about animals' spirituality, at least in this way!

There is another wonderful book translated by western Taoists who is the first of a series to be published but it's more advisable for those interested in the practices themselves.
Interesting. Do you think the cotton gets wet and cold? I thought polyphil resisted water, so therefore it could freeze. But I didn't know that ingesting it might be bad for them.
I think I might try this, but I hate messing with their nesting boxes: https://www.amazon.com/Small-Pet-Select-Jumbo-Bedding/dp/B0725L68KB/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?crid=1Q1K8FZ60M6MY&keywords=wood+chips+bedding&qid=1671733502&sprefix=wood+chips+beddin%2Caps%2C202&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXV...
Wood-based bedding.
Yes, the polyfill is dangerous. My squirrel got it wrapped around one of her legs, which became swollen and purple after she tried to chew it off, and could not.
For this and for reasons of not wanting polyfill or other unnatural fibers to get into their digestive tracts, I use cotton batting. It's cheap, and a little goes a long way.
But it seems to me that this natural alpaca hair could be awesome nesting material for them. It won't get stringy, and it is soft. They also won't eat it.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F8MRLBG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s01?ie=UTF8&th=1
I think it's cool that they have the good sense to prefer the natural stuff. I buy this cheap cotton batting in winter because I know they love to find the fluffy stuff to line their dreys to prepare for the emergence of their tiny, hairless pinkies, soon. I started getting it when i felt worried about them ingesting poly fibers.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F8MRLBG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s01?ie=UTF8&th=1
I would avoid anything electrical. For some unknown reason, chewing on cords is really attractive to them. It must be just the right, irresistible consistency.
As others have mentioned, they're hardy. The best way to support their need for self-warming calories is to feed them high quality stuff. I too put out fluffy stuff for them to use to line their dreys, since this is breeding and nesting season. They want their little pink babes to have the best, most insulating stuff. I buy cheap cotton batting for them. Cotton, because if they ingest it, it won't hurt them.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F8MRLBG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s01?ie=UTF8&th=1
I built some with my dad, and we have three total. What sucks is, they just have to be really high and secluded for them to be interested in them. They aren't going to feel very comfortable in one ten feet off the ground. Plus, it seems like they don't like them if there's not more than one way out. They don't seem to like being trapped in something.
The people who raise squirrels put them in the nesting boxes as babies, so when they're released, they're already used to their home, and will continue to use it in the wild. That doesn't happen with wilds. They'll be afraid of it for weeks and months, and not going inside it.
If I were you and you wanted to make something, the square feeders with the lids will be used EVERY DAY. It only takes a couple days before the squirrels discover them and use them. If you could make them cheaper and sell enough, it would probably be a decent profit that immediately gets used by the squirrels.
Hey this one looks cool: https://www.amazon.com/Toilet-Holder-Storage-Stainless-Tissue/dp/B09DD19HZC It's in the Warehouse for $7.55 Maybe I'll get it. I like the phone shelf. I'll attach it to my trash bin. haha
If you can get this cheap, it's my favorite book about squirrels: https://www.amazon.com/North-American-Squirrels-Michael-Steele/dp/1588341003/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=north+american+tree+squirrels&qid=1671050562&sprefix=north+american+tree+s%2Caps%2C154&sr=8-1
It's about their two-decade study of squirrels and monitoring and tracking them. It goes way beyond the "did you know squirrels plant trees by forgetting where they buried their nuts?" type of knowledge. Stuff I didn't know, like:
Back to the distress calls, I was just reading a white paper about it, and this was pretty interesting: https://imgur.com/gH7ZFM9
They're calling that response a "moan," and you can see it is usually reserved for aerial stimulus. During their testing, no squirrel's used the moan for terrestrial stimulus (like a cat).
Is it raised off the ground so it's harder for ground animals to get to it? I would definitely vote for a feeder nailed to a tree. I still had a fat raccoon try and get to it, but the trick is to only leave enough food out for the day crew, and not overnight. So when the night prowlers check for food - there isn't any.
These types of feeders are awesome. Keeps the birds away too. https://www.amazon.com/MONT-PLEASANT-Squirrel-Platform-Squirrels/dp/B09VBFQ1VY/ref=psdc_3238155011_t4_B098K68HX4
Raccoon poop is no joke, so watch out. It gets roundworms that pass on to squirrels, which kills them.
I lived in Seattle for over ten years. If she doesn't have a squirrel feeder, and is able to put up a feeder, then something like this is a must: https://www.amazon.com/MIXXIDEA-Squirrel-Feeding-Structure-Removable/dp/B09B1XPJVB/ref=sr_1_29_sspa?crid=2WK5BDXQNK3LF&keywords=squirrel+feeder+pennington&qid=1666897762&qu=eyJxc2MiOiIwLjk5IiwicXNhIjoiMC4wMCIsInFzcCI6IjAuMDAifQ%3D%3D&a...
It keeps nuts away from the birds and rats. But obviously you can't put it up in a place like an apartment complex, so only do it if she has a house.
Maybe even some mixed nuts in the shell. Winco has a variety of pecans and hazelnuts in the shell, so that would give her weeks of awesome snacks to give the squirrels.
Yes, Vicks salve in a vaporizer can help, just be sure to not put it too close to him. Good call about holding him upright, and be sure to feed him the formula in that position also.
Some of the nipple feeders are not safe. I don't know what you have, but my advice would be to order the miracle nipple. It's $14.95 on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Miracle-Nipple-Syringe-Included-Original/dp/B00SQIDLF4/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=miracle+nipple+for+kittens+original&qid=1666192932&qu=eyJxc2MiOiIyLjcyIiwicXNhIjoiMi42NSIsInFzcCI6IjIuMjUifQ%3D%3D&sr=8-3
In some places, it is same day delivery.
You might want to cross-post on r/WildlifeRehab and / or r/AnimalRescue, as there are rehabbers and veterinarians in both of those subs who have experience with squirrels and other rodents. Not all squirrels who aspirate develop pneumonia, but many do.
This is a plunger syringe. https://www.amazon.com/Syringe-Full-Plunger-Style-Syringe/dp/B006SJMYKG
Most of us who help wildlife have used them. However, when people push on the syringe or allow the baby to suck too vigorously, they can aspirate. The miracle nipple is safer. YOu can get it on Amazon, and it arrives overnight.
if your baby is 8 weeks, it will still want / need formula. It would not yet be fully weaned by Mom. What formula are you giving?
Correct administration of the antibiotic will be the most important thing for him now, though. The lethargy is concerning.
About probiotics: give them an hour after giving the antibiotic, and on an empty stomach.
I’ve been seeing this everywhere so it’s definitely not weird because enough adults do to sell these everywhere on my feeds lol
That's why I buy these types of feeders instead: https://www.amazon.com/MIXXIDEA-Squirrel-Feeding-Structure-Removable/dp/B09B1XPJVB/ref=sr_1_17_sspa?keywords=squirrel%2Bfeeder&qid=1663258833&sprefix=squirrel%2Bfeed%2Caps%2C153&sr=8-17-spons&th=1
I'm surprised the crows haven't figured out how to open the lid, though. I hate feeding the crows, cause they take so many, so fast.
You need a feeder like this, nailed to a tree or fence that is above the ground where the rats can't get to it - nor do they have the size to push the lid open.
I have this one and it’s perfect. I think it took a screwdriver to put together. Just a thought; she looks perfectly happy without one! https://smile.amazon.com/BOTINDO-Squirrel-Feeder-Picnic-Table/dp/B08M3XJL7N/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?crid=N739YCIS2RE5&keywords=squirrel+picnic+table&qid=1658208479&sprefix=squirrel+picn%2Caps%2C201&sr=8-3
I bought a deep bottomed ferret cage (like this), which has plenty of room for substrate so that they can dig. With that said, I've seen people keeping them in smaller enclosures, so I would bet that as long as the cage is interactive and there is something on the bottom such as hay or substrate it can be kept happy. If I'm correct and it is a Richardson's, then I don't think it actually needs a buddy and one may stress it out, but on the off-chance it actually is a prairie dog, this isn't the case. It may be worth taking it to someone more qualified to see if they can get it IDed conclusively if you're unsure at this point.
I'll just respond to your other comment here as well. I don't know very much about their noises, but I've heard that they can generally just enjoy chirping. Hopefully you can know your pet's body language and tell if he's behaving in an off way in some other way that might indicate anything is wrong, but I don't think the chirping should be cause for concern. I've dug up quite a few pages on the keeping of a Richardson's, so I can DM them to you to read if you'd like! For the sake of full disclosure, I haven't actually kept one yet and only mean to get one within the next couple of days.
I second this comment.
If you ever need Ivermectin though, you can find it on Amazon.. I’ve ordered some when I had to treat a squirrel.
My fav for feeding or mixed nuts in shell. https://www.amazon.com/Pecans-Crispy-Fresh-Presto-Sales/dp/B07SFZDK44/ref=mp_s_a_1_2_sspa?crid=DEVCMO5A6OAD&keywords=pecans+in+shell&qid=1654829678&sprefix=pecans%2Caps%2C116&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVy...
They will definitely pig out on unshelled nuts. So I like that they have to work on it a bit to get to the treat…. and they are perfect for stashing. But totally agree, they are perfectly capable of surviving sans treats. :)
A great idea that's super easy! I have a number of eufyCam 2C wireless cameras with solar panels around my property and they're excellent. They also have night vision so you'd be able to see what's going on night and day.
You could build a box with this camera mounted in it, or take the top off of a prefab box to add a camera.
The way I minimized the rat problem was getting stuff off the ground, mainly with these types of squirrel feeders nailed to a tree: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B099JN58C9/ref=sspa_dk_detail_0?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B099JN58C9&pd_rd_w=Lcboy&pf_rd_p=57cbdc41-b731-4e3d-aca7-49078b13a07b&pd_rd_wg=epSiZ&pf_rd_r=QC3JVJNYJXJTC8P5EPSS&pd_rd_r=c39aef01-1972-4c66-85c0-88295...
The rats can't climb the tree very well. Plus, you only put enough nuts to give the squirrels breakfast and dinner - don't leave any nuts in there overnight, cause that's when the rats are out.
I love squirrel furniture!
I bought two picnic tables from u/de_ilope Etsy store. Red and yellow.
Someone bought my stepdad this swing which is perfect for sunflower seeds. The momma squirrels will sit there until they have eaten every single one!
A shot in the dark: We put out hamster food in addition to sunflower seeds (+ some walnuts, pecans). The hamster food has good nutrition, so they started looking healthier (good fur, bushy tails).
We used this [Fortidiet](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001PLESBK/?th=1) blend, there are probably others.
I'm frugal, and bought OFF spray, but my dad said that shit is the worst. So I finally splurged and bought some Sawyer spray with that Permethrin ingredient.
I have a couple of squirrels that behave exactly like this and have scratched my hands a few times. It's a good idea to wear gloves when hand feeding them or else you can resort to just tossing the nuts to them.
Recently, one of them bit my husband's toe and caused it to bleed. It probably looked like a pecan to them. 😂 He started wearing house slippers more often to feed squirrels by the patio door.
Here's a link to the gloves I have. They provide enough protection against their sharp nails.

Thanks chainsawinsect! I didn't know ivermectin was good for fleas too!
SuttonTacoma, I keep a syringe of ivermectin horse paste on hand because mange is such a common problem and I've had some squirrels with bad cases of it. It might be more expensive now because people are using it for COVID too, but you might want to just buy a syringe and keep it on hand for when you need it. The rule of thumb is a little dab no larger than an uncooked grain of rice. I bought Durvet from Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Ivermectin-Paste-Dewormer-6-08g-Flavor/dp/B000HHLWPI but I think farm supplies have it too. It has a really powerful awful fake apple scent (and flavor, apparently) which I found really offensive but the squirrels don't seem to mind. I put the small dab on a pecan and rub it into the crevices. (Or choose a different nut, something you know your squirrels love.) Another person in this forum let's it dry first before giving to the squirrel. If a wrong squirrel gets it it's not a big problem, but just make sure that same wrong squirrel doesn't get re-dosed when you try again for your target squirrel. There's a lot of good info in this forum about ivermectin so I recommend you search for the term.
I'm not experienced but I used to watch mouse trap Monday's videos (had some mice problems in the kitchen) and he reviewed this type of trap before and they worked pretty well.
The shipping changed and now none of those will arrive until Tuesday.
What about this? Is this the same thing? It could arrive Friday.
Apologies, I was just editing to post which might be why you couldn’t see the link. I think we’re looking at the same product!
https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00KZ14WM6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_WBGK1YZV4PPNK2PJ5Q2Y
I was originally looking at the smaller bottle with the sprayer, but saw the 32 oz could arrive tomorrow.
Does this seem like a good one? And how much do you mix in a water bowl? It has a sprayer, so I could potentially spray the injury but I’d be afraid to scare it off and not have it return.
This is the link to the page of the product I bought. I see it is still available, the price is a little higher now, probably because a lot of people are using it for COVID, but it's still reasonable considering the suffering you can alleviate. You will get more doses out of this thing than you can possibly use unless you have like 5000 mange-affected squirrels. :) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000HHLWPI
There's a little cap on the end of the syringe and if you pull of the cap you will likely see some gel already there. I personally don't like to use product at the end like that so you can push the plunger a little bit to get rid of that and get fresher stuff. I found it was more convenient to leave the gel in the end of the syringe and use a toothpick or some other small non-absorbant object to scoop out a very tiny amount and spread it on a nut, I find pecan halves work well because there are nooks and crannies.
There are other threads about ivermectin here so I encourage you to search for them, lots of great info from people who have a lot more experience than I do. But if you are able to dose your affected squirrels I think you will be very pleased with the result and I'm sure the squirrel will be relieved because there isn't just hair loss, the mange mites cause an awful itch too apparently.
Oh, and I forgot to paste the link. Thankfully squirrel feeders are pretty cheap.
Happily:
They also have one where he is holding a chipmunk 🐿
Sometimes they chew for the minerals/salts that occur in things..........Might try tacking some mineral licks about the place....Worked for me when I had a few chewing at decorative wood posts on our walkways
I used these now for years, they don't seem to bother the squirrels at all....
I was really surprised when it popped into frame! I had no idea we even had one nearby
I'm a trail cam newbie so I don't know the good ones, but after reading a ton of reviews I picked this one up. I'm really happy with it so far. Good quality, the menu is really easy to set up

He's most likely licking the trace mineral salts that are leaching from the wood.............I tack up those little round mineral licks about the place for mine. Helps also keep them from also getting in trouble chewing on the other "no no" items.
Definitely hand feed them personally until the problem Is gone so the squirrels can still be enjoyed! I don’t recommend glue traps those are super sad. Here is some I do.

You need something like this, to a.) get the snacks off the ground, and b.) with a lid so no other animal can open it.
Amazon doesn't seem to have the Pennington one I buy. I have three and they're great. They were only about $20 as well.
https://www.amazon.com/Tenn-Well-Gardening-Bundling-Decorating/dp/B07FD3NB2Y
do you think 10mm would be too thin for a squirrel tightrope? I see them walk on powerlines all the time, I think they'd be able to traverse this if it was taut
Shop around, and read up on other blocks that people use, but Henry's is the most recommended.

They can be a bit expensive, but it's just so good for them. Also note that they're not the best tasting things in the world, so you need to start feeding them to the squirrel before they get the taste for other better tasting things, like nuts.
I don't use squirrel-proof feeders. Because they aren't actually 'squirrel proof.' I put my bird feeders on a pole with a squirrel baffler underneath the feeders. And I placed the pole, far enough away from the tree, so the squirrels can't jump onto it. I bought ground feeders with little roofs for the squirrels from Amazon.com. And, I buy squirrel feed from Chewy.com and fill their little feeders twice a day. If people would feed the squirrels, they would be less tempted to get into the bird feeders.
I've been using this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0868V9FH4 and it has proven to be very popular with the squirrels as well as all the birds that come visit. It gets more bird visitors than the larger ceramic one I have sitting on a metal stand.
The only downside is that it's rather small, so needs to be filled again every morning. But its visitors (I suspect either the squirrels or doves) manage to muck it up enough every day that I'd need to clean and refill it regardless.
Thank you!
There are a couple of issues. I live on a busy one way street, with two lanes of traffic and parking on both sides, plus a bike lane. It's essentially four lanes wide. The mom that I have been so worried about, she lives on the other side of the street, and I'm pretty sure it is in someone's back yard. I circled the block and back alley a couple times, but didn't hear anything. Unfortunately, it's also been cold this week, and we got about 4 inches of snow last night. I've also been housesitting for a friend of mine, who lives a few blocks away. So I've not been around as much to see which of my friends have been visiting.
Just really hoping it wasn't a mommy, but also realistic that this is one of millions of squirrels that die every year, and I can't save them all. I can only do my very best to make their lives a little easier with food, water, and shelter.
Maybe it's time to get some squirrel xing signs...
Personally I’d get something like this instead.
The protein/far/fiber ratio is much better in this one.
I couldn’t find Zupreem monkey biscuits on Amazon Mexico. I think the technical name is Zupreem Primate Dry Diet. The blocks that Henry’s Pets sells are excellent quality but I’m not sure if they ship to Mexico or the cost to do so.
I keep going back to this one, because it was interesting in the sense that they spent a lot of time monitoring them in the wild. It's not overly scientific, and more than the basic stuff.
It's just this book I bought that I like: https://www.amazon.com/North-American-Squirrels-Michael-Steele/dp/1588341003/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=north+american+tree+squirrels&qid=1609010058&sr=8-2
When I first discovered squirrels, I was so interested in learning more, and this book wasn't just dumb stuff like, "squirrels can find most of the nuts they bury!" It's fairly scientific, with them tagging and watching squirrels and documenting all their findings. It has some pretty sad statistics though, that I often quote, like all but two male juvenile squirrels leaving the area they were born. The two that remained had lost their mom early, so maybe they didn't feel secure enough to leave the area when others did. But I believe the book said they eventually emigrated somewhere else eventually. That stat was sad, because it explains why some of your favorite squirrels just leave one day. Their body tells them they have to go (so they don't mate with relatives) and I bet it confuses them. They're like, "I like it here! There's a nice person that gives me all the delicious snacks I can eat!" But they can't fight that instinct. :(
I'm not sure about D, but i used to dust this calcium carbonate powder on the wild squirrels food. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0064GZPPO/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
They didn't care if the nuts were covered in the powder.
I bought it on Amazon, but you're in Europe and I'm so dumb that I don't know if Amazon is over there? But here's what I bought:
The nuts could be completely coated in this white powder and the squirrels didn't care. It was getting on my clothes and balcony though, so I got lazy and stopped giving it to them.
It's that the case, he can do what I do, and it's pretty cheap: get some calcium carbonate powder and dust it on their food every day. They don't care if the almond is completely covered in it - they'll eat it. So yeah, if i were him, i'd buy it and give it a tree.
