I highly recommend looking up interviews he has been in. They are very insight. He also has a interview where he talks about albums he enjoys listening to.
I can't necessarily give you a string-by-string tuning, but as with most Swans questions - there are some answers in the great book Sacrifice and Transcendence by Nick Soulsby.
On page 62, in the chapter about the making of Filth, Gira talks about how he would play the bass guitar and the fingering he used which he called the 'staircase chord.'
> 'I had no idea what notes I was playing, but I've since found out that, say you're playing an open E, then you play the octave of the E on the next string, then on the string after that you depress the fret in between, it create a terrible dissonance: the shape of it on the frets is like a staircase. I believe it's called a flattened fifth?' - MG
From what I can gather here, Michael was probably playing open on the low E string, the 7th fret on the A string (for the E octave), and the 8th fret on the D string to create the dissonant tritone (B♭) on top.
Alternatively, you could try playing the open E, first fret on the A for the tritone, and the second fret on D for the octave. Both variations with your amp blasting should give you some down and dirty Filth vibes.
As a final note, I highly recommend <em>Sacrifice and Transcendence</em> if you want more fantastic insight into Swans throughout their career, from all the big players and then some. I consistently find myself referencing it.
I have these which I like because they come with interchangeable filters for different levels of noise reduction. Plus it comes with THREE earplugs in case you lose one. They're also extremely soft and very comfortable -- enough to forget you're wearing them.
If you zoom in on the image at Amazon, it looks very much like a flyer that says SWANS and NEW MIND right under that.

Click, then click the zoom magnifying glass to get closer. Pretty visible on a 27" monitor.

Just a little update on this; I was able to buy access to the doc with a VPN on TunnelBear from the US. However, after clicking "Watch Now", the site detected the VPN and wouldn't allow me to watch it.
