Colloquial Tamil is one of the few decent books I have found. Getting pricey though it seems. But it will definitely give you a place to start.

என் ஆண்ட்ராய்ட் செல்லிடப்பேசியில், Google-இன் Indic Keyboard-ஐ உபயோகப்படுத்துகிறேன்.
இரண்டுமே நன்றாக இயங்குகின்றன.

Hi,
I found these to be very useful: https://www.amazon.in/Writing-Practice-Books-Set-Tamil/dp/B01FMX9VRC
I'd also recommend considering hiring a tutor from India who teaches Tamil.
I think the Tamil script is characteristically curly and doesn't lend itself well to simplification.
However, have you checked out Google Fonts? There have some clean-looking Tamil fonts. Look at: https://fonts.google.com/?subset=tamil.
You can use websites like http://www.ytconv.net to convert into AVI. Then use MediaJoin to join the files together.
Here is a book of the original poetry with explanations:
Silapathikaram Moolamum Uraiyum (Paperback, Tamil, Puliyur Kesigan)
Tamil Virtual University (TVU) has an online version of the poems with explanation by a different author:
I was in a very similar position to you. I grew up in Australia speaking only English, and I too felt a desire to relearn the heritage language. Two resources I'd recommend:
Tamil Language in Context - This is the book I found the most success with when I was learning Tamil.
Learn Tamil Through English - Bit of shameless plug, but this is a YouTube channel I started to teach Tamil to beginner-level students who only know English. It include dialogues, grammar explanations, and general language learning tips. Also videos on how to read/write, but since you know the script already this won't be helpful for you.
This may not be what you're looking for, but I'd recommend "Tamil Language in Context" by Vasu Renganathan. It's a book which you'd have to buy it off Amazon, but if you're an English speaker it's seriously the best and only resource I'd recommend for learning the Tamil script. Definitely better than any of the websites and videos I've come across so far.

This is the app to learn tamil but to learn even more quickly watch tamil movies with subtitles or watch tamil dubbed hindi Serials
If you have an Android phone, you can try this app:
Learn Tamil From Telugu by Devi Studios
I have not used it. However, it has 100,000+ installs and four star rating. This company seems to specialize in language learning apps. Give it a try and share your experience here. Thx!
I found this recently when I went to a book shop and it seems to be the best one right now.
Aside from some great build quality, the translations are really good too so I recommend checking it out
I would suggest any Vairamuthu books as they are easy to read and has poetic rendition of human lives, with simple tamil words. To be specific you can gift karuvacchi kavviyam, by the same author. I am suggesting this because even my mom who studied till 5th std was able to enjoy the book without facing any difficulty in reading.
Sorry for posting late to this thread.
