I may be wrong but I don't believe Textra has a built in backup for text messages. I use SMS Backup & Restore (link below) to backup all my text messages (sms & mms) to my Google drive periodically. It shouldn't matter the carrier for moving over the messages. Also once done restoring the messages, open Textra, tap the 3 dot icon in the top right, go to settings, go to about, and tap resync textra. That'll make sure everything from the backup is optimized. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore
I know this doesn't help you now, but I highly recommend this app.

It's free and customizable and backs everything up to your Gmail.
This appears to be specific to Mood Messenger--read the app's description. Most apps don't animate emojis and I'm pretty sure it's not a feature of your phone.
Hmmm. I dunno what else could solve that. Have you tried out Android Messages from Google? It's nice. Hey, try it out and see if the messages show up there. If not, there may be a bug with your device, not Textra. I'd say hold on to Textra and try out Google's app first. Could just be a weird bug. I admit, the default sms app is terrible. Wish it could at least be disabled instead of just swapped over. I apologize if I haven't been much help. Just thought I'd chime in and see what we could accomplish.
If you're on Android, SMS Backup and Restore can save messages from a certain date. But you'd have to back up, clear all your messages then import your backup. It's easy to use too

What I did to get a working for me is I completely uninstall Textra, disable auto updates from the Google play store, then got 4.3 from here https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/delicious/textra/textra-4-3-release/textra-sms-4-3-2-android-apk-download/.
I think it's the last version before the policy change. Have not had an issue since.
I'm on version 3.50 and I followed your instructions to repeat the issue and it works fine, so I don't think it's an update thing. But maybe, try side-loading a previous version of the app ( say version 3.48 ) and see if the setting comes back? Set it to your liking and update to the latest version again and try again.

Sorry I'm two weeks late I just hate seeing no responses on posts like this. Hope this helps.
Read It To Me is awesome. Can't recommend it more highly! I LOVE THIS APP! I recently switched back to Textra because Google Messages doesnt seem to work with Read It To Me anymore (gee what a surprise) but Textra is working just fine.
I use this SMS Backup & Restore everytime I switch phones and it's been an easy process. Just need to install the app on both phones click backup on the old phone and back it up either locally or on something like Google drive and then transfer the local file or point the restore to your Google drive and let it do it's thing. They advised me to uninstall and reinstall and see if that fixes.
For what it's worth, Shush Ringer Restorer keeps it quiet.
Not really, but you can use google voice or a backup program like SMS Backup & Restore and be able to get your messages back if it happens again.
Give this a try SMSBackupRestore
From the Textra website:
How to backup my messages ← Knowledge Base
Textra automatically inserts a copy of all messages into the stock Android messaging database.
Thus you can backup the stock Android messaging database using any number of apps that do this from the Google Play store. We recommend SMS Backup & Restore
Resync from Textra > Settings > About > Resync
