The Dark Angels chapter pack has recently been released to add support for DA scouts and to add a DA battle cry as you charge in to combat.
Hey! Firstly, just wanted to say you're doing a great job - love this subreddit.
I work in a related industry so thought I would try and lend a hand on the typography. If you haven't come across it before, Google Fonts is free and I'd suggest this one. If you have a read on the description, it's inspired by 1st Century Roman inscriptions (so has that ancient/regal feeling) but with more modern aspects on the spacing/forming of letters, so easily legible.
Quick mockup on a generic dark background for you here.
If you don't like it (or sick of everyone making suggestions) then no worries :D
Thank you! It would definitely be interesting to see other peoples helbrecht conversions. It’s great model and very possible. Knew I had to convert it.
Here is the links for the paint racks I use: PLYDOLEX Wooden Paint Organizer... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09C2C5QK3?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
This is the one I have.

I bought it about a year ago. It's not perfect. I had to replace the needle once. I'd been cleaning it too aggressively because it clogs easily on account of the low PSI from the battery powered compressor. But I've used it a *ton*. It's annoying to clean out the frequent clogs and I've struggled to get the paint consistency right. But I've also used it for basecoating terrain and models, for painting stencils on vehicles, for zenithal highlighting with white ink, and for painting some shadows/surface variety on terrain pieces. After a year of pretty regular use, the compressor is holding up just fine. The airbrush itself is getting a little wobbly. But I think I can get another 6 months of use out of it before my urge to buy a standalone compressor becomes unbearable.
Think of this as a gateway drug.
Thanks, a lot of the first born in there I bought pre-painted on eBay many years ago, I then fell out of the hobby and got back into it in mid 2018 and nearly everything apart from those first born in the lower shelves have been collected, built and painted since then.
The termies were part of the first born I bought on eBay and I decided to not repaint them, and I actually prefer painting the blade guard in the DA green over the DW bone. Just a personal preference.
And the lights were these

Usually can find these in your local art shop as well if you're in the US. Sepia or brown looks best with the bone white color. I've used these for years for writing on shoulder pads, purity seals, etc. They do an easy job of it. Just be sure to let it dry and do it LAST so you don't rub it (and maybe clear spray it)
Just to add to this, it was white because that color represented death in their culture. I’ve always assumed it was because it’s the color of bones but I don’t think that’s stated in the story.
It’s in the short story “Deathwing” by William King that came out with the Space Hulk expansion: https://www.amazon.com/Deathwing-Warhammer-000-Graham-McNeill-ebook/dp/B01N6H5HUX/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=deathwing&qid=1623102604&sr=8-2
Vallejo are generally very nice to work with. Model colour on average have better coverage per layer than Game colour but as they're aimed at real military schemes tend to be less saturated and have more very specific shades of aluminium, khaki and camo than you'll ever need unless going for historical accuracy. Mecha colour goes the other direction, vivid shades that have to be used in moderation or your mini looks like a bandai toy.
As for it being more than you need... That never happens. I spent a month trying to work out exactly which paints I needed when I got back into painting a year ago before giving up and buying this thing. Since then I've added another 12 metallics from Vallejo's Model and Liquid lines, 3 FW Rowney inks, and even a couple of Winsor & Newton oil paints for washing.
Start with whatever you feel makes sense and can justify spending, but do not ever buy in to the idea that just because your first paints are from one range you have to stick with it. Play around, it's a hobby not a marriage.
Strongly leaning towards ordering this off Amazon, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000PHCTRK/
Probably more than I need but it could come in handy
If he isnt familiar with the Horus Heresy this is a pretty big jump.
The only Dark Angel book i've listened to is War of Secrets by Phil Kelly. I enjoyed the audiobook rendition but the content of the Novel itself has its own set of issues. It is the only option though if you want to see Primaris and Original Space Marines interact in the Dark Angels though.
From just a reading standpoint, Gav Thorpe is a mixed bag but he basically "owns" Dark Angel lore. These are now kept in a few omnibuses (how GW packages series a few years after release).
Start with Knights of Caliban which can be found on Amazon. It includes the two first books (The Purging of Kadillus is more battle heavy while the Angels of Darkness starts the reader off going down the journey of the rest of Thorpe's novels regarding the relationship with the Dark Angels and the Fallen. Afterwards pick up Legacy of Caliban to finish the series as it includes the three remaining books.
Long post greatly appreciated.
I asked around and might be able to get some airbrushing supplies from a friend my parents have for cheap. Checking out the compressors for it's PSI rating when I find it, gotta look through a pile of stuff in the cellar.
I figure I need something like this https://www.amazon.com/-/de/dp/B081LQKH5X/ref=twister_B081LR1MD6?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
for normal compressors? And of course an airbrush + connectors/adapters itself.
I probably could get running for around 40-50 €.
Which masks do you need for optimal protection?
I think surgical masks won't be good enough probably?
I concur. I recommend using something like this: Vallejo Pumice.
Just apply over the cork, then paint and "decorate" however you like. 200mL will cover a lot of bases, too.
