From the forum's patch announcement:
>Altitude is now completely free. There is no full version to purchase: new players will automatically gain access to all of Altitude's planes and perks as they level up. Our goal with this change is strictly to attract new players; we will no longer make any money from Altitude.
>Widescreen Support: in the interests of maximizing Altitude's attractiveness to new players we've updated Altitude's native resolution from 1024x768 (4:3) to 1280x720 (16:9). Players can now see 25% farther ahead of their plane horizontally and about 6% less far vertically. This change may disrupt plane balance; we'll be around to issue a balance patch once everyone has had a chance to experiment with and provide feedback on the new field of view. Please let us know if you notice any graphical or gameplay problems related to widescreen support.
Altitude
Platform: Windows, Mac, Linux
Price: $9.99 normally, $2.49 during sale, free demo has multiplayer support
Description: 2D dogfighting game with a bunch of different ships, modes, and maps. Controls take a little getting used to but the game is frantic and a lot of fun.
Nomination submitted by /u/Jomskylark. To change it, please send a request via modmail. Thanks!
Also worth mentioning that the game is 50% off right now ($4.99 USD). It's gone on sale for cheaper before, but even at that price it's well worth picking up.
Altitude. Great side scrolling game and its now 100% free. Community is still alive but could use a boost in numbers.
Altitude - Easy and super fun multiplayer 2D plane dogfighting.
Besides that there are a bunch of free online multiplayer games I would recommend, but all require internet connections and some need Steam.
That looks very close to what I remember, except MiniSquadron appears to be for mobile platforms, while I played on a Mac. I wonder if its a spin-off or something.
Edit: I dug around using MiniSquadron as a clue, and found the game I was looking for: Altitude. I'll check it out and see if it's held up with time. Thanks for the tip!
Price: 8.99€ / $9.99
Platform(s): Windows, Mac, Linux
Description (taken from Steam Store page): Blast your way across the cartoon skies in this fast-paced game of aerial combat. Nimbly Games has crafted an instantly accessible, rewardingly deep, and ravishingly fun multiplayer action game. The sirens have sounded, bogies are coming in hot…
Moderator's note: There is a free demo for Altitude which actually supports multiplayer and just restricts things like ship upgrades. So new users can play with game owners for free!

Currently, Altitude...my most played Steam game with over 700 hours logged in. Yeah, there are players there that have obviously been playing longer than me, but still, this is definitely a lesser-known game that I've been obsessed with.
Back in the day, WrestleMania XIX for GameCube. I spent countless hours diving into the create-a-wrestler options and messing around in 4-way ladder matches and replaying a few specific storyline missions. Very underrated wrestling game; combines elements of the highly-praised WWF No Mercy gameplay with a faster, more accessible fighting system.
>The Altitude demo available from http://altitudegame.com/ and Steam has no time limit and includes access to all 5 planes (1st red perk, rubber hull, heavy armor, turbocharger).
>This perk set includes choices that are viable both for casual and for competitive play. If you enjoy Altitude but can't afford to buy it, please stick around, our community would love to have you.
This is the best weekend lineup we have ever had, by far. Don't flake out! If you can, show up early and practice flying straight so the evening isn't one big crash-fest. Actually... come to think of it, learn to swerve all over the place, because that's what the maps are shaped like.
Last game I played (and have been playing the most lately) is Altitude. I'd have myself a small selection of awesome planes with unlimited fuel and ammo, but I'd be stuck flying in a two-dimensional basis in a limited environment while other people hunt me down or try to bomb my base. But even if things go bad I can always respawn...I hope.
I don't understand the constant search for the next big distribution platform. Steam works.
I played Altitude before it was on Steam. Told all my friends about it, couldn't get any of them to buy it as a stand-alone indie game. Within six months it showed up on Steam and suddenly my friends were happy to buy it. The tiny community grew into a stable community because of all the extra exposure from Steam.
Fans of indie games have nothing to gain by having scores of different platforms. If your game is rejected by Steam, why not polish it up until it is good enough instead of running to a different platform with less stringent requirements? If the only people using a new platform are struggling indie game developers, how does that help attract new fans?

I recommend this game Altitude
It's a fun 2d plane game with different game modes like team deathmatch, plane football and base destruction (my fav). It's fairly easy to pick up but difficult to master. Since it is fairly casual with quick respawns etc it is very forgiving. Check out the demo :)
Tip: I recommend using the mouse to control the plane and the keyboard for the afterburner
I always have to recommend Altitude (Steam link with a demo). It's a pretty awesome class-based plane combat game with various multiplayer modes (Ball, base destruction, deathmatch, co-op). I've dumped countless hours into servers running Football maps.
Altitude is pretty has a pretty decent trial game that is free to play (basically whole game with limited class perks). Its a great multi player game that I have sunk 100s of hours into
