... But you go to NYC and hear a mishmash of different accents just walking down the street.
Why should Wakanda, which was formed by many tribes who got together to form a coalition whilst maintaining their respective traditions, be any different?
The multiple dialects drive home the idea of peaceful cooperation without homogenization/assimilation - the OPPOSITE of traditional colonization.
Incidentally, over 1500 languages are spoken on the continent of Africa. The US only has English as a widespread language w/ different accents bc of cultural colonialism.
Moreover, Wakanda may be isolated but thanks to technology, Wakandans are well-traveled and internationally-minded. Obvi, Wakandans have spent time in other countries before returning home - Kanye probably credited himself for Shuri's fashion sense. Wakandan culture is as cosmopolitan as NYC, Shanghai, London, etc.
I saw BP with my Ethiopian friends. They picked up right away on what the film was doing with accents.
While they are mutually intelligible, there are significant difference beets them and most consider them to be different language. Since OP asked about usefulness I am talking about the bigger language, Indonesian.
This has some great information if you want to check it out. https://bilingua.io/standard-malay-and-indonesian-language-comparison
I 've recently taken 2 interviews from a professional translator and a language tutor and then I wrote artciles: one about the translation and the 2d is about replacement of human tutors by artificial intelligence. I will be glad if you find it helpful! https://bilingua.io/foreign-language-learning-translation https://bilingua.io/need-language-tutor
I think this wasn't mentioned yet, but one of the things that truly helps is really a minor adjustment. Your friends who speak Dutch, I assume they try to speak Dutch with you(if they don't that's a good place to start). If you don't understand them at all, you will most likely need some form of a course to get you started. Once you got some basics down, you most likely will understand them better and better. However, when you get to the point where you don't understand everything, don't let them tell you the English word for it, rather let them explain the word using Dutch.
Along with how language acquisition works, I'd say also look for a job that requires you to speak it/practise it. Because as with anything, keep trying. The more effort you put into it, the better it gets. See language immersion: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Language_immersion
Also here's some extra tips from another website: https://bilingua.io/pro-language-immersion-techniques
Good luck in your ventures!
haha, i've recently written an article which concerns exactly the topic of language exchange! So glad that it can help someone to make his conversations more fun :) Here you are: https://bilingua.io/conversation-exchange-guide#whatToTalkAbout
Someone recommended Bilingua and have enjoyed it so far. They base their partner selection on an algorithm that also takes interests in account, aside from languages you like to learn.
Other language apps than HelloTalk are Hello Pal, Tandem, Idyoma, Italki, Speaky, NiceTalk Tutor.
seems live Mocha shut down and changed. Not sure if how it changed is any good.

this website says it's the same community but I never used it, so I don't know anything about it.
One, Nintendo Soup isn't a reliable source. They were one of the first to say Persona 5 was getting released on the Switch, and we all know how that turned out. Two, it says English Physical Release. So a game is coming out in English, where the main languages are Lao, Thai, Burmese, Khmer, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Malay, Indonesian and also a peppering of Chinese dialects?
YTA Knowing Mandarin can be a HUGE advantage. Do you know the types of jobs you can get being multilingual? Do you know how much business western companies do with China? And I presume will continue to do? Spanish and Mandarin would probably be the two top languages to give you an advantage in b2b positions. I would have loved to have had the opportunity to take Mandarin when I was younger and if I had a parent that was fluent I would feel downright cheated if they hadn't worked to pass that on to me. Your child is 2, she is at the best advantage for learning another language now because of her age and having a fluent parent in the household. God I'm jealous, don't deprive her of this. You sound kind of elitist about your mother tongue vs. hers too. What are your facts on french being more useful? Because a quick Google search lists Mandarin as #1, followed by English.......French comes in 8th place (https://bilingua.io/10-best-languages-to-learn-for-business)
That's a great start! Maybe when you've got a good basis, join a language learning community! That's how I learned the most Spanish. I used Shared Talk, but it looks like that shut down about 3 years ago. I found this article, though, and it looks similar! Good luck!
Livemocha going away sucks for everyone, but this site is supposed to be a good replacement. I really think it's time for you to go into a language exchange and really put time into it. I myself am starting to lose my Japanese to running a business and fatherhood, so I may get back on the horse soon as well. But don't be shy, find someone to talk to immediately.
