Carbon ROM 20140613 nightly Android 4.4.3 https://carbonrom.org/downloads/?device=hammerhead&type=nightly ElementalX kernel v0.4.4 if I'm not mistaken TWRP recovery
General feedback: Based on AOSP, so it doesn't have the memory leak issue that CM-based ROMs have. The overall UI hasn't been messed around with, which is another thing I like about it.
Also, it is fast. Coupled with the ElementalX kernel, it's even better. I've had few good things to say about custom ROMs on the Nexus 5, but if you're looking for speed, stability, battery life and features, go with this ROM-kernel combo.
The only thing I do not like about Carbon is that they've tried to replace the Holo blue which still remains in some places with white. It just looks pushed, out of place, and sometimes ugly. I'm using a theme though, so that issue has been dealt with.
I use CarbonROM, no issues so far.
I switched from stock because the aggressive killing of background apps was becoming a real annoyance - I could have a podcast playing and it would just stop. I didn't find a fix for it so I switched to Carbon to see if the problem would go away, and it did, so I'm satisfied.
They just gives no fucks. They're blatantly in the back pockets of the Telecom giants and really aren't even trying to hide it, it seems.
I have used a couple and would rate them in order:
ROM Name: CarbonRom
ROM Version: 05/22 Nightly
Android Version: 4.4.2
Download Link: https://carbonrom.org/
Kernel: Slim Kernel
Recovery: TWRP 2.7.0.0
General Feedback: Very smooth and stable, moreso than CM11 M6, which I came from. I like it more than stock because of Carbon Fibers. Hardware Comments: Everything is working swimmingly.
Stability & Performance: Very stable, comparable to stock+gravity box in that respect.
Caveats & Warnings: Google Camera crashes sometimes.
Well, here I go:
Have a nice day everyone :)
Not necessarily, they are not updating any of the phones since November 6th. They are working on a lollipop build but are in no rush to push out a nightly so it can be as smooth as possible.
LiquidSmooth thread the link to the download is dead in the OP though an update is being worked on.
Thread for Carbon with download
I suggest checking the threads on XDA, next time for active links.
I've been using the CM11 Nightlies for a couple weeks now and the battery life is insane. There is no way I'm going back to stock. I mean the stock battery life is great, with CM it's even better. Why don't you want to flash CM? The Nightlies are very stable.
Here are the Carbon ROM nightlies. I cannot speak to it's stability, but I will eventually give it try.
If you decide to stay stock, Xposed is a MUST. Honestly, the majority of people seem to go with the stock+Xposed combo. I used it for months and it was very good. However, like I said earlier, it still doesn't beat the battery life I'm getting with CM.
Lastly, if you decide to stay stock, consider a custom kernel along with the Synapse app. Sadly, there is only one custom kernel that I know of and it was recommended to me a couple days ago by another redditor and it's Decepticon. It didn't work with CM, so I flashed back to stock last night with the custom kernel. I didn't really get a chance to play around with it.
Thanks for mentioning the Paranoid Android ROM. I was not aware it existed. I'll give it a bit until it gets more stable and then I'm sure I'll end up giving it a shot.
CarbonROM has nightly releases.
You can install AirDroid onto your phone and use that for transferring data to/from phone after zipping it up.
Phone/Android Settings will need to be reconfigured. Custom launchers should allow an export.
ROMs should come with tethering unlocked.
ROM Name: Carbon
ROM Version: Aug 15 Nightly (though there are more updated ones)
Android Version: 4.4.2
Download Link: Link
Kernel: Hells Core
Recovery: CWM
I get a solid 3.5 hours SOT out of it with no kernel changes, really. Highly recommend setup.
According to https://carbonrom.org/changes-to-nightly-build-schedule/, Carbon stopped doing daily "nightlies" because the build servers were drawing too much power. They now do nightly builds twice a week.
Interesting... well it seems they've continued development as there have been quite a few nightlies posted since the post you linked. You can see all of the nightlies released since here: https://carbonrom.org/downloads/?device=vs980&type=nightly
Your best bet would be to ask a ROM developer in the your XDA forums who specializes in AOSP ROMs to help maintain the device. The official Carbon site says that they need a physical phone for it to get it working.
I am, frankly, overwhelmed by the range of tweaks. Read up on what they call 'Carbon Fibers'. If you like a tweak-heavy phone (I'm more interested lately in simplicity but have used Xposed and the like heavily on other phones/ROMs) Carbon makes it very easy to customize without having to install other apps/modules.

I've not used PA much because it never seemed to live happily on my T769 and I'm leaving my N5 and N7 stock+root.
AT&T user here. I finally got fed up with waiting for KitKat and decided it was time for a change. I found an exceptional custom rom called Carbon that I installed on my phone and I've never looked back! No more bloatware, my phone is MUCH snappier and I've got tons of cool features and customization.
Seriously guys, break the cycle! Don't let your carriers tell you what your phone is and is not allowed to do.
