Cinelerra has been inactive for a few months now. Last update was in December last year to Git. http://cinelerra.org/
Lumiera is still active. Last update to Git was 4 weeks ago. http://git.lumiera.org/gitweb?o=age
There are free ones for almost every platform.
Which operating system are you using? For Windows and OSX (Mac) there are tons of options, for example https://hitfilm.com/express : it supports animated masking (so you can censor parts instead of cropping the whole image), but of course also the standard stuff (cropping, zooming) and tons of things you won't need for now.
For simple cropping and zooming there is software with "simpler" user interfaces (but I personally have difficulties working with them), for example Windows Movie Maker or iMovie. Haven't used them in a while, though.
For Linux, things are harder. Maybe http://cinelerra.org is worth a try, although their workflow is not that great compared with HitFilm or expensive stuff. At least it was the last time I checked.
Sadly, censoring means that I can't just do it for you (as you need to trust the person doing that with the unedited files), so I hope that at least helped a tiny bit - feel free to ask if you need something else.
it looks the same :P
the hg version recently got a revamp http://cinelerra.org/2015/ and there has been some activity over at the cv version. it is a shame since cinelerra was the greatest, even though development slowed it continues to be very powerful.
> Movie Maker - Linux alternatives I've found either lack features or are not stable,
What about cinelerra?
> Paint - Yeah, I can use Gimp, but what if I just wish to quickly draw something with my mouse over a screenshot?
KolourPaint is similar to classic MS Paint. I use xournal to paint over screenshots though, because I prefer vector graphics for that sort of thing
> Office
There's also Calligra, and the Gnome Office suite, but if you really want to insist on MS Office, you could use Office 365. Now that of course means handing some of your documents and data over to Microsoft. But you'd have done that by staying on Windows too.
Yeah, you have to add the ppa and then apt-get... just follow the instructions on the bottom of the pager here: http://cinelerra.org/getting_cinelerra.php#ubuntu
Edit: The "Cinelerra for Grandma" instructions. Cheeky fuckers aren't they?
Way more than you'll ever need. Free. Steep learning curve.
You'll have to boot into some Linux distro from a USB stick or configure your PC to have a dual boot option. (very desirable under any circumstances)
I'd imagine /u/canyoufixmyspacebar or our esteemed Nazi Kwisatz Haderach /u/theflyingbastard can help you accomplish that with ease.
I, myself, cannot.
(read in Hannibal Lecter's voice.)
I agree, this is pretty good considering it's free. It's a very basic editor, but if that's all you need it does it just fine.
The alternative would be to install a Linux distribution and get yourself Cinelerra. I know this is not Windows native but I've heard good things about it
There is no adobe premiere on linux but that there are no good open source video editing programs is not really true. Of course it always depends a bit on the definition of good. If good mean "1:1 copy of premiere" then no, linux has no good editing programs. But that would be a pretty narrow use of good..and very limiting.
blender definitively earns to be called "good". Can't really say much about cinelerra and kdenlive but they seem to have a lot of users as well.
Edit: typos
I have edited with Cinelerra (Linux) and Final Cut Pro (apple). I prefer Cinelerra. It's not as pretty as FCP but it is easier to work with, free, and does all the things you want. OpenShot (Linux) is new and looks promising, but I am waiting for it to display audio waveforms on the time-line before I dive into it for a project.
You wont be morally justified unless you pirate the exact same software from that company. (Though, seriously, why not call them up and bitch and moan).
As for pirating software, easiest way is to get a torrent client and google the name of a program for editing film media. Like Adobe Premiere, Final Cut (if it's a mac), Sony Vegas, or Pinnacle (which I dont actually like). Etc.. etc.
As for the viruses, you kinda just have to hope that the cracker didnt put anything in it. As, alot of the packaging tools are sometimes reported as false positives and you cant audit the code unless you are also a cracker. The most you can hope for is that the program isnt making any rogue calls out to some network or something. Though, for the most part there is not guarantee. So, you're screwed on that outcome.
If you're doing simple editing or quick editing perhaps acquire something free and opensource like Ubuntu Studio or CinelerraCV
Goodluck.
