> Does Claws Mail allow me to write HTML styled messages?
> No. A discussion has gone around over this topic, and the outcome was that HTML mail is not wanted. If you really need to send HTML, you can of course attach a webpage to an e-mail.
This is a required feature for me regardless of the mental gymnastics they do to make it seem unimportant.
Mutt is amazing for CLI geeks, but for everyman usage, these three are indeed the best to try.
I haven't tried it, but the only other one I've heard about is Claws Mail. Personally, if I'm not using mutt, it's Thunderbird (or IceDove if you're running Debian).
Thunderbird = not really that heavy but can do everything so it's good
KMail = really good but depends on kwallet so that annoys me.
Syplheed = incredibly lightweight
Claws-Mail = improved fork of Sylpheed still incredibly lightweight
Geary = looks good but can't even sort by Unread so it is a crap client
I use Claws Mail. It works pretty well, is reasonably configurable, and it has GPG support.

You're asking about mail clients, but the NSA angle seems more relevant to mail servers (or service providers).
I think you must activate it in your gmail account first (imap preferences or something)
Edit: you can't see the imap folders in your mail client?
Edit 2: you should get help here: http://www.claws-mail.org/faq/index.php?title=Using_Claws_with_Gmail
I can't believe no one mentioned Claws Mail. Even before Thunderbird's future was thrown into question, Claws has been a tough contender for the mail-client of choice for me. It's a bit fugly when you first install, so the first thing I do is change up the icon set, and then you're good to go.
I recommend checking out their features to start with. My favorite is "Watch marked threads".
I've only been using Thunderbird for maybe a year or so, migrating for better calendar support, after being a long-time user of the excellent claws-mail client on Debian. I may just go back to it if Thunderbird isn't properly maintained.
Yes gpg4win would only protect files.
The files in your gmail account are not yours to control at least to my knowledge.
If you had lots of files I wouldn't use gpg4win for it. Something like Folder Locker is better suited for mass file storage.
edit: a good alternative to Folder locker is veracrypt and for email I know Claws and Thunderbird are good. I believe claws supports gpg4win and not sure about thunderbird
I'm curious about this. I've heard about it for years but never gave it a try. Installing now...
Edit: Installed version from official Ubuntu repo (Trusty), v3.9.3, had problems with SMTP and SSL certificate. Updated to newer version (v3.11.1) using claws mail PPA, installed elementary theme, it works like a charm, it's pretty and it feels more responsive than Geary when retrieving/sending messages (in IMAP).
