Thanks to Desktop Earth my left monitor is showing the moon, the center monitor is showing the globe, and the right monitor is showing a 2D view of the earth. I eschewed the screensaver that comes with the app to use a Flying Toaster screensaver for that truly retro look.
I actually had something like this setup a while ago. It worked on dual monitors, with eastern and western hemisphere being displayed on each. And, as a bonus, you had real time cloud data and the planet wouldn't just go dark, it would use the nighttime pictures. I don't recall the name of the app at all, but this might be in http://www.anka.me/desktopearth.aspx
Also, take a look at some alternatives, maybe one of them is better http://alternativeto.net/software/desktop-earth/
EDIT: Just installed desktop earth, it seems to be working. I don't think that's the app I used in the past, because that one required me to edit a bunch of text files for configs. But this one does work with multiple monitors, and that makes me happy.
I'm using Desktop Earth for my wallpaper and have been since I found it several years ago.
I'm not on the desktop very much so I don't get tired of my wallpapers very often.
Woah. Does it work with windows 7?
Does it work with other applications? I use desktop earth and would love if static background images could cycle through my desktop image background.
I like Desktop Earth updates my monitors every 10min on where the sun is shining in the world. Never have to worry about looking at the same wall paper and getting bored.
i had a very similar background that was pre-installed with openSuse a couple of years back, DesktopEarth is the closest thing i have found to replicate the old desktop. Supports dynamic globes and 'flat' world maps. You an customize it quite a bit, and also set the refresh rate and stuff.
