This is a desktop application (Electron framework) that I made, inspired by this post by Seena.
It's open-source and you can get it on GitHub.
So what do you think?
Edit: Holy shit this got more karma than Seena's post in like 4 hours. I know the sub has grown since then but wow... Thanks everyone for the kind words.
u/nnkd hey dude. It seems like you haven't been on reddit lately but if you ever find this, i want you to know that you're awesome, and you're the one that inspired me make this thing. Keep it up!
2nd edit: So i woke up this morning and this got to the top of the Golden Five. I have no words.
3rd edit: OK now its going too far. This thing literally just boosted my career. And i'm still a high school student. I need to take a small break. Enjoy the day one hotfix.
There's Edex-ui that's a working terminal app based on Encom OS as seen in Tron Legacy
Looks cool, works like a charm, has different and customizable themes
You can install the UI from here.
https://github.com/GitSquared/edex-ui
Go for the Arm7 version, that should work. The rotating globe might not work, but that can be disabled. I do find it useful, especially when running console apps, yes it is buggy, but i didnt code it lol. Its a nice ui, that i think has got legs if done right.
Thanks :)
Themes & keyboard layouts are .json files placed in the appropriate folder (on linux, that's ~/.config/eDEX-UI
). You can activate one either permanently by specifying it in the global settings.json file, or on the fly by navigating to the config folder and clicking/touching on the theme/layout you want on the filesystem display in the bottom left corner.
I should have showed this off in the video, damnit.
edux-ui is a workable UI that emulates the touchscreen appearance of the on-screen itnerfaces in Tron: Legacy
https://github.com/GitSquared/edex-ui
You could use it (very briefly) for day to day use as it has a terminal, on-screen keyboard and file manager, with theming and configuration support built in.
Details:
Not quite what you're looking for as it's an application not a full theme, but it's usable-ish.
"eDEX-UI is a fullscreen, cross-platform terminal emulator and system monitor that looks and feels like a sci-fi computer interface. Heavily inspired from the TRON Legacy movie effects (especially the Board Room sequence)"
Its a pretty cpu heavy and slow terminal just for the hollywood look
https://github.com/GitSquared/edex-ui
I actually saw someone trying to mimic it on conky, will see if i have that post saved and edit this comment to share it
i agree, being able to quickly navigate through my desktop with only my keyboard is really wonderful.
i don't hold it at all against anyone who prefers having those animations though, because i get that it does kind of help the feeling, helps it feel more alive or something. also, if you're using a laptop and travel a lot, who wouldn't want to look like some hollywood hacker :p
Simply the best... edex-ui

https://github.com/GitSquared/edex-ui
Its just a sci-fi themed terminal written in electron. Its pretty cool kinda heavy and if you use i3 you'll find it basically gets rid of all the utility of a tiling wm cos its meant to be used as its own self contained thing
Available as an AppImage at: https://github.com/GitSquared/edex-ui/releases/tag/v2.2.8
(at the bottom of the page)
Several themes available.
That's awesome! I'm a backend person, so I'm used to setting up services, networking, etc, but messing with flex boxes makes my brain bleed! I know for a fact i'm probably making beginner mistakes, but oh well, gotta learn somehow.
> I really wanna play around with pushing UI further into the sci-fi level of things, just for fun.
Totally, I was partially inspired by eDex-UI but it didn't quite fit my use case. Visually it's stunning, but workflow wise it isn't the best. I'm trying to take a workflow that I would actually use and make it look nice.
Feel free to open issues/pull requests with ideas, shoot me questions if you have trouble with backend stuff!
eDEX-UI is just an app. You can install it on windows, mac and linux. Download it from here --> eDEX-UI download
edit: spelling. The Appimage works great if on Linux!
either https://github.com/seenaburns/dex-ui or https://github.com/GitSquared/edex-ui
"just" a very tech-artsy desktop shell, installation instructions can be found at either's github page (if it isn't packaged already for your distro)
this link download link will download the app image i used. Its just the 64 selection from the edex ui github page
That's how the terminal looks like out of the box, you can download it through here:
I will say that it is not better than the original terminal, it just looks better but that's it. :)
You can also try this application eDEX-UI. It's very cool! https://github.com/GitSquared/edex-ui
"[..]While keeping a futuristic look and feel, it strives to maintain a certain level of functionality and to be usable in real-life scenarios, with the larger goal of bringing science-fiction UXs to the mainstream."
Ayyyyy lmao, did you ever get any further?
Similar to Edex-UI. Have you seen that?
