Use http://goldendict.org/ with some other format than stardict, as it doesn't support morphology. Also add a French hunspell dictionary for morphology.
Another suggestion would be to use aard2 with either English and/or French wiktionary.
I try not to get caught up looking up every word, though I use GoldenDict which does speed up the process. To encourage me to do this I also like listening to the audiobook while I follow the words; kind of encourages me to keep going and not get hung up on definitions, though I'll look up a word if it seems important or gets repeated a lot.
I like Chekhov as well; I find him to be a nice difficulty level and his stories a nice length. If you got through Master and Margarita however then you're definitely doing something right, well done on you for that!
Goldendict: http://goldendict.org/download.php
The second link will install it with English<->Russian ready to go out of the box.
You can set it up so that if you highlight a word and press a specific key, it automatically pops up.
I found some decent ones, posting here in case anyone else runs into this and needs to add a dictionary:

http://goldendict.org/dictionaries.php
The Goldendict ones will need you to either have the Goldendict app with a 3rd party reading app that supports it, or you'll have to download the stardict dictionaries (Oxford OED seems to be available in .dict/dz format).
I've personally found the Wordnet 3.0 and Webster's 3rd New Int'l Unabridged from the first link to be best.
GoldenDict. Tons of dic's to download (http://goldendict.org/dictionaries.php). Put those dic's in (SdCard/)Goldendict-folder, app will ask which to import or menu->manage dic's. Free version no ads, but 5 imported dic's maximum. So far imported Babylon dic's tranlated every single searched dutch<->english word in my case.
In Moon+ choosing dictionary opens GoldenDict automaticly on my devices. And GoldenDict has optional dark theme
Linkme: GoldenDict
Moon+ Pro and GoldenDict work perfect together here. Goldendict is my favorite dictionary. Free version 5 loaded dic's max and has ads. Can download via their website lots of dic's ( http://goldendict.org/dictionaries.php) and copy to SdCard0/Goldendict. Babylon dic's are great, so far never failed a English-Dutch translation contrary to other dic-apps.Has night view. In Moon+ highlight/select word, choose dictionary, Goldendict appears in popup mode with translation.
Don't know if works with FB too. Can't find dictionary option in this app.
GoldenDict might fit the bill. Sits in your systray and can be invoked with a keyboard shortcut. See here for more information: http://askubuntu.com/questions/359144/mac-os-x-like-built-in-dictionary-in-ubuntu/359157#359157
