I was getting the same thing last night and it freaked me the hell out.
I decided to restore my account last night. All I did was recover / add my XDC account to the Guarda web wallet (https://guarda.co/app) and used my secret key to interact with my funds there. Everything seems to work great there and after some of the other issues people were having with Xinfins web wallet, I think I will stick to using Guarda for now.

if you need to "restore" a Secret Key just import in your wallet, thats all. If you want, try Guarda.co, you can create a wallet with a few coins in your actual wallet, export SK, and import in Guarda. You will pay for that, but alseo you will learn.

To get used to crypto, I would say to start with a hot wallet (personally I like https://guarda.co multiplatform and easy to use supporting several currencies).
I guess you well be able to buy crypto using fiat from sites like coinbase, avoiding the need to exchange bitcoin to another coin.
You may want to hold BTC because of the value, but I would advise you to make some tx using BCH or Litecoin to (to get used to it) without wasting money with high fees for low value tx.
If you like it and get used to it, you may start looking into ETH to understand tokens and gas. It was a bit tricky for me! (https://www.ethgasstation.info/ is your friend)
Finally, if you want to invest more money I would recomend you to look into hardware wallets like trezor or ledger.
And most importantly: only invest what you can afford to lose! It easy to make mistakes.
