That is a really difficult question. I think the only movie that comes to mind is Dumb and Dumber and its sequel. They were always losers and they certainly remain losers after the end of the movie. Still, it is a comedy and I do not know if you are looking for a more serious movie.
Gattaca is a great movie. The idea of gene manipulation is a concept we might very soon be confronted with.
You should try ‘Children of Men’ (Alfonso Cuaron, 2006).
This article has some really cool suggestions:
‘Shaun of the Dead’ (Edgar Wright, 2004)
‘Tucker and Dale VS Evil’ (Eli Craig, 2010)
‘Zombieland’ (Ruben Fleischer, 2009)
Have you ever tried any Korean ROM-COMs? They are great and really fun to watch. You can check out this list:
‘200 Pounds Beauty’ (Yong-hwa Kim, 2006)
‘100 Days of Mr. Arrogant’ (Dong-yeob Shin, 2004)
‘My Little Bride’ (Ho-joon Kim, 2004)
‘How to Use Guys with Secret Tips’ (Wonsuk Lee, 2013)
Yeaaah the whole magical realism and just other kind of mediocre approaches with certain overused tropes and -isms in some of his books kind of made me see where people are coming from when they're quick to call Murakami overrated. Definitely not an author for everything.
I think it turns extra polarizing because there's people who are just super into his stuff that can be vocal in defending a lot of common criticisms people have like blatant recycled plots and characters, and writing sections where he's just rambling on.
While I don't agree with necessarily every word, this article does summarize well enough how people feel about him.
Well, one of the legitimately young actors is Angelina Jolie. :P
There are tons of good hacking movies like Hackers, though I am not sure if I catch what you mean by 'a similar atmosphere'. Maybe some 80's and 90's movies? :P
Real Genius (1985)
WarGames (1983)
TRON (1982)
The Lawnmower Man (1992)
Ok, this is going to be the most unnecessary recommendation ever due to the how famous these films are but: Terminator 2 and Escape from New York.
I also found this article about movies similar to The Raid.
`Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels´ (Guy Ritchie, 1998)
`Natural Born Killers´(Oliver Stone, 1999)
`Killing Zoe´ (Roger Avary, 1994)
`The Boondock Saints´ (Troy Duffy, 1999)
‘Kill Bill’ Vol. 1 & 2 (Quentin Tarantino, 2003-2004)
‘In Order of Disappearance’ (Hans Petter Moland, 2014)
‘The Limey’ (Stephen Soderbergh, 1999)
There are a lot of mystery thrillers with an extra twist or two you could try. You will really like the following titles if you fancy the Dan Brown style:
Steve Berry - The Third Secret
John Case - The Genesis Code
John Fasman - The Geographer’s Library
Lev Grossman - The Codex
Ross King - Ex Libris
Kate Mosse - The Labyrinth
I agree with Talkasaur. Norwegian wood is the best book to start your adventures with Murakami. In this article it is described as the "The least supernatural and the most accessible of his works", a spot-on comment.
I am not sure if this is what you are looking for but Kindred by Octavia Butler has a similar plot.
"A present-day woman keeps traveling back in time to visit her ancestors — who include both slaves and slave owners. Dana has to learn to survive the institution of slavery and become part of the plantation's community."
Miyazaki is a great director and a man of vision. As Senpai_Notices_U said, may of his films are based on books. (You are well informed!)
I am upvoting this comment and I just want to add this wonderful article on 7 Books Like Studio Ghibli Movies.
These books are very similar to Holmes - Do not stand only to the first of the list, all Agatha Christie novels are great mysteries:
‘Poirot Investigates’ (Agatha Christie, 1924)
‘The Murders in the Rue Morgue’ (Edgar Allan Poe, 1841)
‘Raffles, the Amateur Cracksman’ (E. W. Hornung, 1899)
Grotesque might be the most disturbing movie I have ever seen. Also, Anticrist: It is the story of a couple in therapy coming to terms with the loss of their son.
There is nothing like Zardoz.
This article claiming to have 5 movies similar has none:
http://itcher.com/mag/movies-like-zardoz/
And that proves it.
I will try anyway.
Silent Running
The Man Who Fell to Earth
Soylent Green
The Omega Man
THX 1138
Logan's Run
I'd prefer a sequel and I've invested a ton into this game ($1400?). The physics engine, the graphics engine, more empire specific vehicles & weapons. Brand new fantastic environments, more cities, more forests but not shit fog death tree Hossin.
Any other big multiplayer war games coming out with vehicle battles?
found this: http://itcher.com/mag/games-like-planetside-2/
dust sounded intriguing, also heroes and generals crud dust is closed down, eve legion will be pc only.
No man's sky just came out but not sure I'll meet other players there.
'The Mechanic' is a great movie. I was going to propose the same because this article reminded me of the movie. It includes 'The Mechanic' and some great movies like ‘Collateral’ (Michael Mann, 2004).
I recently wrote an article on my favorite All-Female metal bands such as Aldious and DollsBox. Check it out! These girls are amazing and do deserve our attention.
Maybe these are more to your liking:
‘Secret Window’ (David Koepp, 2004)
‘Sexy Beast’ (Jonathan Glazer, 2001)
‘Funny Games’ (Michael Haneke, 2007)
Reservoir Dogs (1992), The Warriors (1979), Conan The Barbarian (1982), Tropic Thunder (2008), The Losers (2010), The Expendables (2010), Serenity (2005), Seven Samurai (1954)

Here are a couple of movies from some great female Danish directors:
After the Wedding (Susanne Bier - 2006)
Someone You Love (Pernille Fischer Christensen - 2014)
Fighter (Natasha Arthy - 2007)
If i'm not using tastekid I tend to use a website called itcher.- used to use imdb and netflix and stuff but got tired of their weird search systems. itcher seems to be pretty decent for this sort of thing though.
What an excellent insight into the Japanese metal scene! I'd love to know your thoughts on our article from itcher magazine about Japanese female guitarists: http://itcher.com/mag/best-japanese-female-guitarists/
