Time for me to copy and paste one of my favourite reviews:
>Do you know why everyone keeps writing the same review of this album? You know the one-the one with the street lights and the rain and the cold night air and the bus rides and the fast food and the melancholy? The kind that every wise-ass takes the piss out of? > >I think I know why, and it's the same reason why we sometimes look at a painting and want to live in it. We want to live in a London as stylized and strangely beautiful as the one in Untrue-we want those walks to the corner store at three in the morning, those nights on the subway staring out the window and thinking about the rain, those nights with a crappy omelet and a cup of coffee that tastes like turpentine. Because when you feel misunderstood and lonely, leaning against a lamppost with your sigh captured in the autumn air is much more pleasant an idea than staring glassy-eyed at a computer screen in semen-stained boxers while searching desperately for some sort of music to wake you up and make you feel something. We're not just waxing lyrical about the fog and the moon and the taxis to get likes, we're trying to get closer to the world we were shown in Untrue. It's melancholy as escapism, and it's beautiful.
fuck everything
EDIT: if you want to start listening to prince but don't know how to dive in since it's hard to find anything, listen to this mix https://www.mixcloud.com/pablodiscobar/dj-u-tern-the-purple-mix-prince-favorites/
Amazon has pre-order of Currents Deluxe Edition (2-disc), release date set at 2nd Dec 2016
EDIT 5th December 2016: Apparently this was bullshit, no release yet
No.
I’m a huge fan of Demon Days myself, and that record has bestowed upon us major Gorillaz hits in Feel Good Inc. and Dare, but this is honestly fucked. Ys is not only a masterpiece, it is wholly unique. I would say revolutionary, but people still haven’t copied what she’s managed to do, so no revolution has happened. I know ratings sites can be lame to use as reference points, but on RateYourMusic, Ys has a 3.9! Anyone familiar with that site knows just how ridiculously difficult it is to get a rating that high. That’s landed her the #222 album of all time with that rating.
I dreamed you were skipping little ~~stones~~Ys across the surface of the water —
frowning at the angle where they were lost, and slipped under forever,
in a mud-cloud, mica-spangled, like the sky’d been breathing on a mirror.
RIP Competition. To Pimp A Butterfly better go far.
EDIT: Do you guys forget about upvoting the thread this quickly?
hooray, after just over 7 months i've finally listened to every album on the essentials list
heres my listening diary if anybody is interested in seeing my really bad opinions i have
this was a super high quality list and i found a lot of really great stuff. strongly reccomend checking all these albums out for yourselves!
In a world where we have 1 hour EPs and 22 minute albums, what do words even mean anymore
What's everyone's top 10 albums of the year so far? There's been a lot of releases in the past two weeks that could shake up the rankings. Here's mine:
David Bowie - ★ [Blackstar]
Xiu Xiu - Plays the Music of Twin Peaks
Anna Meredith - Varmints
Deakin - Sleep Cycle
Tim Hecker - Love Streams
Weezer - Weezer [White Album]
Deftones - Gore
大森靖子 [Seiko Oomori] - Tokyo Black Hole
Teen Suicide - It's the Big Joyous Celebration, Let's Stir the Honeypot
Matt Elliott - The Calm Before
The Field - Follower is a honorable mention, but The Calm Before barely beats it out.
my rym for anyone that cares, i have a constantly updated 2016 list there
If you're curious what other artists Pitchfork has panned, I made an extensive list on RateYourMusic. It has every album they've ever given a 3.0 or lower with quotes and links: https://rateyourmusic.com/list/camerabob1/pitchforks-least-favorite-albums-3_0-and-below/
In this case, perhaps. However, many fantastic albums such as Since I Left You, Paul's Boutique, and Endtroducing, all could not have been possible to make without the samples they used. Sampling in itself is its own kind of artform, especially when multiple samples are placed together to create an entirely new song that doesn't sound like anything else.
Take, for instance, the title track from the aforementioned Since I Left You. The WhoSampled page counts at least 8 songs used to make the song, but there are rumors that many more have been used. Sure, one could say that the band could have re-recorded it all in a studio, but would it have the same sound? Would it have a same feeling of eclecticism? I agree that limits on sampling are needed when one song is used egregiously in another or something like that, but to say the artistic freedom argument is ridiculous is, well, ridiculous in its own right.
Yep. Tidal pays artists triple the rate Spotify does per stream. Napster, ironically enough given its founding, pays the most of all.
https://freeyourmusic.com/blog/how-much-does-spotify-pay-per-stream
I ranked every song that has ever topped Billboard's Alternative/Modern Rock Songs chart and now I need a nap.
Ehh I get that but at the same time they're obviously catering to the le wrong generation crowd and have continually said that they were not inspired by led zeppelin. I think that's probably the worst part for me, like nobody cares that you want to be led zeppelin, but just fucking acknowledge that you are inspired by them.
someone put my new album on rateyourmusic , which is kind of cool? but they gave it a 2.5 which is not that cool? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
e: hurray! another rating brought it up to 3!
My Top 100 albums of the year is now fully complete on RYM!
Will make it the full top 300 in the coming days/weeks, but the top 100 is the REALLY great stuff I've heard so far. Will continue to update as the year concludes.
I hope you've all been doing spectacularly! :)
Hello, Jack. Congrats on releasing a stellar record! It might have surpassed Bowie’s Blackstar as my favorite of 2016 so far. Here are my questions:
Speaking of Bowie, what are some of your favorite tracks of his (if any)? What did you think of Blackstar and the way he went out?
Would you be interested in releasing the lyrics for Life of Pause? I uploaded and added lyrics for all of the tracks on Genius, but there were a few I was iffy on (“… my love” on “Alien” drove me nuts!). If you don’t care to release lyrics for all of the tracks, at least tell me that one! Here is the link to the genius page. Feel free to edit any errors I made.
Bonus: What were the first and last tracks you finished for the album?
This is absolutely stellar, really good job! Everything that i haven't heard i want to check out, and MAN that chart is extremely aesthetically pleasing dude. wow. Great write up too. One of the best posts this sub has seen for sure! If there's one album i'd add to this chart it would be Aztec Camera's High Land High Rain under the Jangle Pop section, can't miss that one either! Also i'd note that, to me at least, i feel that 60s girl group songs had influence for indie pop melodies and twee pop especially. Though that's a bit of a stretch.
There also exists an absolutely stellar compilation by rough trade called Rough Trade Shops - Indiepop 1 that i recommend everybody check out! There's lots of "one-song wonders" on here that you can't squeeze in on an album chart like this, example: Carol Mountain by Modesty Blaise (which i'll note is maybe my favorite twee pop song of all time)
Also i'll second that this should legitimetly be side-barred. Why shouldn't posts like this be side-barred? We already get lots of questions about "where to start with indie x", and there should be more than just our sub essentials. Guides like this are much more informative and quality than simply a chart of albums. Add the shoegaze one too in the process
For my last stupid edit, Eureka is, like, the greatest album of all time. so check that out.
I guess we'll have to specify between Fishmans Bassist Polaris, and Pete & Pete Polaris.
Also, one of the guys from the Pete & Pete Polaris, Mark Mulcahy, actually did an album last year! I haven't heard it yet, but I'll have to throw it on sometime.
Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada absolutely. It's the highest rated EP on all of rateyourmusic (and it's not even close) for a reason.
And for fans of the album it also has my favourite review on the site.
Hey guys, spent a lot of time on this writeup for a song I feel really strong about, if yall could give me feedback I'd really appreciate that!
I've been thinking recently of the idea of starting an archive of "bad music reviews". It would basically be a collection of any professional website or magazine which had published a review that is totally against the general reception. So for example things like Pitchfork's 0.6 of I Get Wet, except I don't want it to all be Pitchfork, as many different publications as possible, ideally.
I like the idea of being able to see all the times that professional music critics utterly failed to predict how an album would be received. It would be a good way to remind people that the music criticism industry is fallible, and that amateur criticism needn't be worried with holding itself to high standards. Plus hindsight in music is fun.
Somebody please let me know if something like this already exists
EDIT: Somebody on RYM has had the same idea but for only Rolling Stone reviews. Specifically, The 500 Worst Rolling Stone Reviews Of All Time. This isn't really what I was thinking about when I first made this post, but it is far beyond my wildest imaginings. Somebody out there really, really dislikes Rolling Stone
The classics that you didn't mention are:
Talk Talk - Spirit Of Eden/Laughing Stock (ground zero for post rock)
Slint - Spiderland (It's not the same kind of post-rock as the others here, but it's one of the foundations of the genre and a must-listen)
Dirty Three - Ocean Songs
Beautiful violin playing, one of the most gorgeous post rock albums which is a feat considering the genre.
Sigur Ros - Ágætis byrjun/ ()
Hands down the most beautiful post-rock you can find.
Hex - Bark Psychosis
A review of this band/album is where the term "post-rock" came from
Swans - Soundtrack To The Blind
One of the heaviest post-rock albums
Tortoise - Millions Now Living Will Never Die/TNT
Ever get tired of the endless crescendo-porn? Want something more subdued and jazzy? Listen to tortoise!
These are the one i would recommend if you haven't heard these classics, if you ever want more just go through This chart from Rateyourmusic!
I know this isn't super relevant to everyone's interests but I figured I'd share since this is a music sub.
I saw a lot of interest for a Snoop Dogg guide on LH since he has such a large, intimidating discography. So, I dug through the rest of his material over the last few weeks and put one together on RYM. I tried to make it as comprehensive as possible... without going too overboard or in-depth.
If you don't want to read through the whole thing, I also made a visual/flowchart. There's extra side projects and resources on the chart too, in case you want some other info.
Anyway, just figured I'd share since I know some people seemed interested. Lemme know what you think!
Best band t shirts? I'm waiting for this thom yorke shirt to arrive and i just find it so funny. i don't even listen to radiohead much.
May not be so random as it appears. According to the AllMusic review of their album "the drum beats from the album have been feasted upon for samples so frequently that samples of the samples have likely been sampled." Do I think Kevin Parker just lifted the drum part without taking credit? No, but it's entirely possible that the beat originated with them or something. I don't know, these guys probably deal with random people sampling them all the time.
Anyone have any T-shirt recommendations I can wear to Pitchfork? This is the only one I’ve bought so far.
SongKick.com was built for this purpose. You enter your city and all the bands you are interested in, and it emails you when they announce a show in your city. Works well for me.
Me and my pals are music FREAKS. Just an absolute bunch of SICK FUCKS who CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF MUSIC. While all the "normal" kids in high school went out to the stadium to watch football, we went to watch.... THE MARCHING BAND. Everytime I hear the melodic chime of a doorbell, I get ROCK HARD.
Anyway, we decided to funnel this love into something productive. So, we made Listnd.com. It's a site where you can rate, review, list, and share the music you love (and hate). For example, you can keep rate every album you've ever listened to, keep track of stuff you want to listen to, and list your top albums of the decade (listing season is approaching). We also have Spotify integration now to make it easier to discover new stuff.
Check us out and feel free to DM me any feedback you might have at all. You using the site prevents us from committing MUSIC-RELATED CRIMES
In the spirit of the gorgeous You Will Never Know Why finally getting bolded, what are some of your biggest examples of preferring an album by the artist that isn't the "canonical" choice?
The more controversial, the better. EDIT: Here's a few of mine
Aesop Rock - Bazooka Tooth
Swans - The Glowing Man
Bark Psychosis - Codename: Dustsucker
of Montreal - Paralytic Stalks
Death Grips - No Love Deep Web
R.E.M - Green
If you like Run the Jewels and want the production style taken in a more abstract direction, highly recommend El-P’s work including:
Cannibal Ox- The Cold Vein
Company Flow- Funcrusher Plus
El-P - Fantastic Damage
If you like Pusha-T’s flow, can’t recommend his group Clipse. One of my favorite groups ever. Hell Hath No Fury is an incredible record and I can’t recommend enough We Got It For Cheap Vol. 2. I love Daytona, but both of these blow it out of the water.
Also, you seem to have a taste for a bit more of the indie or “backpacker” rap so I recommend Factmag’s Top 100 indie rap list. You’ll see a couple of your favorites and some places to go from.
And finally, as this question gets asked a lot, I recommend Nodima’s Hip-Hop Handbook. Bar none the definitive guide to hip hop I think. Just start at the top and work your way down. Find what you like, don’t like, and move from there. I think it’ll give you a good breakdown of the consensus classics while also a look into more unique gems that don’t get nearly as much talk outside the Hip hop heads.
Hi everyone. Thanks for being such a helpful resource yesterday with my search for quality Japanese albums.
I've compiled all of the releases that interested me as well as some of my favorites that I've already heard.
Cheers!
What should be my 800th rating On RYM? I'll review the album after I pick a rec and listen to it.
Review/Edit Crazy Hits
Crazy Hits is not only one of the most brilliant electro-dance albums of it's time, but perhaps one of the greatest musical achievements of the human species. Crazy Hits manages to create immense, meticulously detailed, gorgeous techno house landscapes with it's bass thumping, revolutionary production. Crazy Frog covers, neigh, transforms 90s dance hits with an engaging synthesis of catchy, abrasive sounds (which would later inspire the likes of Death Grips and M.I.A) and an Orchestral Symphony of pure bliss. The album begins with an atmospheric and captivating introduction that intrigues and fascinates the listener in Intro. Then Crazy Hits takes off into it's glorious mix of Abrasive vocals and punchy dance beats in Axel F and We like to Party. Speaking of which, the abundant yet subtle, timeless social commentary of changing lyrics creating such lines as "Who let the frogs out" speaks volumes about global corruption and post colonialism in a confrontation and visceral way that brings to shame so called "conscious and political artists" like Chuck D, Kendrick Lamar, Ice Cube, Bob Dylan, and Killer Mike. Crazy Hits makes so called experimental bands like Sun O))) and Swans look plain and derivative by comparison, creating gorgeous sound collages of Crazy Frog's Astounding, Carefully pitch shifted voice like the breathtaking Crazy Frog Sounds that is essentially an Acappela collage of Crazy Frog vocal samples making Bjork's Medulla look like the S/T she made as 12 year old. Crazy Hits is an easy 10/10 and one of the greatest feats of humanity.
In all seriousness I'd give it a 1/5 stars, it sucked and is definitely terrible but it didn't annoy me nearly as .5 star albums I've heard. Wouldn't recommend it but I chuckled a few times.
these a good chance you've heard most of these but:
sufjan stevens - illinoise (chamber folk)
sonic youth - daydream nation (noisy indie rock)
arcade fire - funeral (indie rock)
stereolab - dots and loops (super fancy post-art pop)
floatation toy warning - bluffer's guide to the flight deck (dreamy incredible neo-psych)
the avalanches - since i left you (the greatest thing ever)
rateyourmusic.com is an incredible website for finding new stuff btw
I think Goo is a pretty accessible and great record, it was my starting point.
Daydream Nation is their most acclaimed album. EVOL is good too, and Sister takes it a step further in that. Murray Street and Sonic Nurse are good albums of their later period.
Most times I'm not very fond of Greatest Hits records, but Hits Are For Squares is a pretty good compilation that covers mostpart of their styles and music. It lacks some great tracks like The Diamond Sea and Schizophrenia though.
I recently finished writing this article about Alvvays' guitar techniques, influences and effects, and am posting it here in the hope that at least one of you might find it interesting
so I finally got through every Yo La Tengo album, and to celebrate having a new favourite band (cause hot damn this discography is good), i did a top 60 yo la tengo songs list plus a discography ranking if anyones interested
feel free to tell me what songs i'm a loser for ranking too low cause you're probably right. this band is incredible and i'm so glad i committed
I wrote a dope-ass rap today about being an Indiehead who has a talent for eating Mexican food:
I've been spendin all my cash/ on more Radiohead merch
eating too much Taco Bell/ now I'm sitting on my toilet and it feels like hell
Well, what can say/ I'd never thought I'd share a stage with Morrissey/ but now I'm out here in LA/ where I will stay to record an album with Dr. Dre
For the longest time, I been on my grind/ not being signed to a major that would recognize
this motherfucking talent that I have/ namely eating Mexican food without getting fat/ cause I'm an Indiehead and I can't really rap/ so what the fuck, give me a fucking chili wrap
so i started my billionth listening diary called 'discography diving' a while back where i just listen to all the classic albums from an artist and then say im finished
so i'm looking for suggestions for some of your favourite artists who have interesting, varied and consistent discographys. bjork and kanye are the biggest examples of the kinds of discographys i mean, but id love to hear all your favourites too that i can add
also feel free to tell me how bad my opinions are because i agree
> I don't know, these guys probably deal with random people sampling them all the time.
There are 408 uses of the sample listed on whosampled.
That's pretty wild and adds some context to this claim IMO. Not saying that it's a legit claim, just that this is probably an almost automatic reaction from Skull Snaps at this point.
Especially considering that they are pretty unknown and sample rights might be a decent source of income for whoever holds ownership.
La La Land Sountrack - So I finally watched La La land and it was amazing. I am manly enough to admit that I bawled my eyes out. The soundtrack is really good too, although it does lose a lot of its emotional power without the fantastic camerawork of the movie. Audition (The Fools Who Dream) is a really standout track.
William Basinski - A Shadow in Time - I'm surprised that this album hasn't gotten more attention. I listened today and its fantastic. It's sort of ambient with lots of feedback loops.
Foxygen - Hang - You can't dislike this album. It's fun, it's over the top, and it's ridiculous. Half of the album sounds like it came straight from a Bowie album, and the other half sounds like it came from a musical. There are definitely some problems, namely the fact that the vocals can be a bit weak. But as long as you don't listen to it too seriously, it's great.
Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer - I can't believe I've never listened to Of Montreal before. This is such a brilliant upbeat album. Can anyone tell me which Of Montreal album I should go to next?
Julie Byrne - Not Even Happiness - There are a lot of good things about Not Even Happiness. The guitar work is fantastic, the lyrics are deep and heartfelt, and Julie's voice feels like velvet in your ears, but I just can't help but feel that the album is lacking something that elevates it from good to great.
I would really appreciate some recommendations or just some discussions about the albums in the collage. I have this 2017 album log thingy here. I'm finding it really hard to write reviews but it's forcing me to listen to more new albums.
Edit: Fixed the formatting
Ever since I've stated using rateyourmusic I've discovered about x1000 times as much music. It's by far the best way I've found to search all types of genres and various decades. My reccomendation is to use this chart, which has all sorts of do-hickeys so that you can adjust the chart to your taste. If you pursue that RYM-LIFEFSTYL you eventually can "follow" people who have similar taste (if you make an account) and you can see their recomendations.
The website has basically consumed my life, but I have no regrets.
P.S. if you want nice music follow me (IF ur redy 4 dat real patrician taste)
Oh and sorry if you already knew about all this but yeah, if you have any questions feel free to ask
2000s post punk was in a weird place of being kind of dormant and kind of dance- heavy, but here's another batch of albums for you to pick your favorite from. Disintegration won the 80s poll btw
I've been working on a RYM list entitled "Damn, that album cover ain't good" for a while now. Basically, if I see a shit album cover anywhere I'll add it to the list.
I want to make Rate Your Music friends. My username on there is a3poify too. I'm into mainly rock, but I'll give anything a try. Here's my 2017 AOTY list for a bit of info as to what I'm into.
Hey could y'all vote on this poll of some 2006 indie albums
(If you're favorite 2006 album isn't there, don't worry, it's just a thing with these albums, vote whichever you like most)
Have you heard that NMH is quoting Alice In Wonderland with "How strange it is to be anything at all." Cause that's bull, I just did ctrlF for The entirety of Alice In Wonderland and it's not in there.
What’re you guys up to this weekend? I woke up really early this morning (~630) and wasn’t able to go back to sleep. So I’ve been working on some album reviews while it’s still rainy outside. I’m also trying to figure out what I’m doing, I have no plans until Sunday afternoon.
Also, seen any good movies lately? I checked out both Jackie Brown and Fruitvale Station this past week and they were both fantastic. Fruitvale Station felt heavy-handed but it was still incredibly sad and touching, imo. If you wanna talk movies or whatever, I just set up a letterbox!
Made as a tribute to murdered MP Jo Cox. Holy shit the lyrics gain a whole new meaning :( That last image is just heartbreaking all over again
I was looking up famous RYM accounts because I wanted to see if any celebrities.musicians had an account but I couldn't find any. However I did find what I think is the worst account on RYM.
FYI album art is definitely by brian degraw from gang gang dance his instagram
edit: sorry i should have said, by "definitely" i mean "definitely looks like to me", didnt see this confirmed anywhere
I just read a really good book called The Devil All The Time I finished it in 24 hours it was that good. It's about messed up people/families/small towns- it's very dark, almost a horror novel but there's nothing "supernatural" about it. It's kind of Southern Gothic- If you like Cormac Mccarthy, Flannery O'Connor, Faulker etc you'll enjoy it. I'm trying to read the guy's other stuff ASAP.
Trailer for his new album, sounds really good. I love Immunity but still need to listen to his other stuff. Seems like the album is out on May 4th going by this
Hey, Y’all it’s me, that guy who keeps writing reviews for albums for some reason. I have once again listened to all 90 albums that were nominated and put them in order in a Rate Your Music list. I tried to explain to the best of my ability what I do and don’t like about each album, but feel free to ask me to elaborate on why I placed an album in the wrong spot. I hope someone finds these lists interesting, but in any case, I’ve really enjoyed going through all these albums. There are a lot of great albums in here folks.
Hi, I ranked my top 50 albums from 1993 awhile back in honor of it being 25 years since. I'm working on 1998 for 20 years now.
On a somewhat related note, I appreciated the album of the year 1998 series this sub put on last month, even though it kind of petered out and didn't get as much attention as it should've. Anything that gives attention to music made more than a decade ago on this sub is what i'm here for.
RYM reached it's goal! Yay Sonemic is coming!
I spent all of yesterday organizing tags on my RYM, then i came to the realization that maybe sonemic would completely rework it. I feel like i might have wasted my time... At least it looks really good, and it's organized right now...
On that note, post your RYM account, and then recommend something to the responders! here's mine: https://rateyourmusic.com/~thomasstc
it has several user-submitted reviews for every album you could think of, ranging from positive to negative. You can also upvote and downvote reviews to make the better ones stick out
also the image servers are down today so usually it looks cooler, but check it out if you haven't
Title according to the Good Ol' Shazam, also somewhat confirmed by this cached AllMusic page
Hey guys I self published a book of poetry that's on amazon if you guys want to check it out. Super excited to have something out there in he world.
Very influenced by patti smith, the beat poets, william blake, and david byrne. Let me know what you think if you do take a look!

This incredibly detailed RateYourMusic list may be of some help to you, it's ordered by continent and country. Before anybody doubts the extent of this list, let me just add that it includes Nunatak, a band formed at the Rothera Research Station in Antarctica
now I've got through the Sleater-Kinney discography, and confirmed they're the greatest band to walk the earth, I decided to waste a couple of hours and rank every album track in their career (like I did for st vincent)
So here's almost every Sleater-Kinney song ranked
feel free to tell me your top 10s, how wrong I am or what have you. I may be pretty biased toward a certain album that rhymes with 'the schmoods'
I finally finished ranking all of my listens so far this year on Rate Your Music. Here is a list of things I rated 3.5 (pretty listenable score) or higher if anyone wants a list of albums to check out. Might be something for someone on the list. GET HIP!
My favorite dream pop albums:
Also, check out the RYM box set.
I can't speak for BBES, but respectful allies are usually welcome.
If you want learn more than you'll get out of a Reddit thread, I find So You Want to Talk About Race? is a great primer for people who want to understand, and are looking for a place to start.
Just finished James Acaster's book Perfect Sound Whatever and I cannot recommend it enough. Mods, can we get this man on for an AMA please?
Looks like just 1 record. Meaning not (m)any longer songs, alas.
Amazon has tracklisting:
I made a post about this the other day but I listened to this today and it was really really great - one of my best finds in a while. Really recommended.
Hey, I was hoping you guys could reccomend some movies for me to watch. I've never been all that big into films, but lately I've been watching them more often. Mainly I've been getting suggestions from this list, which pairs albums with films.
These are some of the films I've watched, listed from most to least enjoyment (though none of them were bad):
Dr. Strangelove, Apocolypse Now, Sunrise: A Song Of Two Humans, Full Metal Jacket, Synecdoche New York, 2001: A Space Odyssey
I have basically no knowledge of classic (or modern) film in general, so really any suggestions will do, though I think I'd prefer stuff with a lot of Surrealism. Or just reccomend your favorite movies.
Thanks. :)
new albums to add to the "quality hypnotic full lengths" category:
Silver Apples - Silver Apples (basically if Animal Collective was in the late 60s and original / heh jk i like anco)
Seefeel - Quique (if soon by my bloody valentine was electronic and also a full album's length)
So lately I've been listening a lot to X's <em>Los Angeles</em>. It's a great album, and I highly recommend it to anyone who would like a blend of punk and '50s rock and roll. Pretty much a defining album of LA punk, and it's a pretty short listen at under a half hour.
I'm almost on pace to reach my goal of listening to 1000 new releases in 2018 (about 83/month)! 77 so far this year, 923 to go... Here's the list if anyone wants to make any recommendations!
The ones I'm the most excited about are two upcoming Belle and Sebastian EPs, and new Django Django, Son Lux, Rhye, Superorganism, CHVRCHES and Gwenno.
But I also have a """complete""" list of a 40 or so upcoming stuff at the end of this RYM list

List of 130 albums i've listened to so far this year (along with ratings and thoughts on the majority of them, need to complete/clean up the list)
my favorites now are:
I did an RYM list of my favorite Shoegaze/Dreampop albums tbh, it's a bit incomplete and there's way more Dream Pop than Shugazi proper https://rateyourmusic.com/list/synthetitec/dreaming-dream-pop-shoegaze-ethereal-wave-space-rock-i-like/
Also did a 60s influenced pop(think Stereolab, Broadcast) list some time ago https://rateyourmusic.com/list/synthetitec/so-mellow-60s-influenced-90s-2000s-pop/
I'm gonna do a Heavy Psych list next, with stuff like Hawkwind, Les Rallize Denudes, Guru Guru, Red Krayola
What's your hottest hot take, don't hold back
Edit: that is definitely not my list I adore AnCo and several other of those bands
TIDAL is a streaming service owned by Jay-Z that recently launched after a tease from various artists on twitter, notably Kanye West.
It features a mere $20/month for patrician lossless audio quality, and $10 for pedestrian 320 kb/s filth. It also allegedly pays out more to artists in royalties
I like how easy it is to keep track of what you've listened to in a simple rating-based format, and if you can sift through a lot of the shitty reviews there are some great ones. I've noticed a lot of albums I thought were generally agreed to be great have surprisingly low aggregated ratings, but I still dig the site as a whole.
I loved when Jim James performed A New Life with The Roots on Fallon. ?uest tweeted afterwards about wanting to do a collab LP with Jim. That would be Incredible.
Not indie, but Frank Ocean performing Bad Religion on Fallon was great! I actually went to the show the day after. I was really bummed I missed that performance.
I have once again listened to, reviewed, and sorted all 90 albums nominated for this lovely year. I was falling pretty far behind after spending a decent amount of time on my reviews for 2012 so I decided that instead of continuing to get further behind I would play catch up here in 2013. So, while I still listened to every album at least twice and listened to most of them even more than that, I scaled back the reviews. As a result, a lot of the reviews are more like what I did on my 2010 list with a bunch of single sentence summations of my thoughts. According to MS word I wrote about 6000 less word this time, so it was a pretty big time saver.
So, now more than ever, feel free to ask me to elaborate on whatever. Thanks for taking a look.
360 albums down just 90 left to go.
was going through a bunch of pop singles on RYM the other day and the biggest crime on that website is Since U Been Gone averaging a 3.01
Thanks for fighting the good fight with CDs! I've got over 2000 on several bookcases in our home and absolutely love them. They still sound great, I can put 100 into my CD player at home at a time, and they still make it easy to appreciate the entire experience.
Here's the collection, minus about a dozen or so that aren't on Allmusic
I've now listened to all of 2010 at least once. I only have about 10 left that still need second and third listens. I also made a rateyourmusic list with them all in order from favorite to least favorite, but I'm afraid to post it because of how much I didn't like some of this subs classic favorites.
edit: Here is the list
Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - Before Today
The Flaming Lips - Embryonic (I'd say that this one sounds more like Cryptograms-era Deerhunter than Halcyon Digest, but it's similar, nonetheless.
Spiritualized - Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space and Let It Come Down
All of the albums above were listed as "Similar Albums" on AllMusic.
And, these aren't exactly 100% modern, but try Stereolab's Emperor Tomato Ketchup or Dots And Loops and Roxy Music's For Your Pleasure if you haven't already. They're pretty big influences on Halcyon-era Deerhunter.
This is an essential read for this album. Give it a gander as you listen along!
Also, the lyrics (some even annotated by Stickles)

This Robin Pecknold, Daniel Rossen, Neil Morgan cover of Corduroy by pearl jam.
Not sure if it’s considered a deep cut but it’s one of my favorite live covers. https://vk.com/video1085018_167530433
If you want to try more indie albums, here's my rym list for this year. See if anything takes your fancy! (also it's worth noting that I take a rating of 7 to mean great, so I'd highly recommend anything that's 7 or above!)
Does anybody else keep an up-to-date list of their favorite albums of the year? I have one on RateYourMusic that I like to use, but I'm wondering how other people keep album lists for the year, and what other websites they use
In light of Pitchfork's list, I made my own Best Shoegaze list
I added in some of the influencer artists (JAMC, Cocteau Twins, etc.) too. I'll add commentary later, but I'm mostly satisfied with this order.
edit: youtube play list
Not really. All of his stuff was reissued by David Byrne's Lauka Bop label. You can buy it on Amazon

If we're talking about bad Beach Boys/Beach Boys adjacent album covers, Mike Love's 2017 album, Unleash The Love is certainly.... an album cover. It really needs to be seen to be believed.
Yves Tumor - Safe in the Hands of Love
Daughters - You Won't Get What You Want
Car Seat Headrest - Twin Fantasy
Kids See Ghosts - Kids See Ghosts
The Voidz - Virtue
SOPHIE - Oil of Every Pearls Un-Insides
Julia Holter - Aviary

Mid Air Thief - Crumbling
Ichiko Aoba - qp
Found a cool list on RYM of album and film companions/combinations, thought you guys might enjoy too. It's great because it incorporates a lot of artsy and experimental but also mainstream albums/films.
In case anyone didn't see it in the 2011 announcement thread a coupe of weeks ago I listened to all 90 albums several times, gave them a short review, and put them all in order from best to not as best. Here is the full list. I tend to give things a lower numarical value than most people, and for the most part the numbers just make the list easier to organize. But for this list a '5/10' generally represents 'average', so anything above that is a positive review. I just chose to limit my yeses to the albums I thought were really great, and not just all the ones I enjoyed, which were most of them.
i'm not very knowledgable on the genre, but I'd like to point you to one of my favorite RYM lists.
A new album from Polaris came out today, a duo which includes the former bassist from Fishmans. It's pretty pleasant stuff.
Lots of Japanese albums, lots of Young Thug and Ski Mask the Slump God.
to no one's surprise, i LOVED the new Beach House. DID NOT LIKE the new arctic monkeys - opening track is a hit though.
So far I’ve listened to Parquet Courts and Courtney Barnett today. Both were solid, but need a few more plays to determine my true feelings about them. Initial reaction is that they have redeeming qualities, but probably won’t end up topping their past work for me.
Forgot how good a mixtape 1999 is. If you haven’t listened in a while, check it back out. Insane joey was only 15 or 16 when he dropped it.
Ambient guys n gals: do yourself a favor and check out the new album Life, Death and the Perpetual Wound from Ministry of Interior Spaces (aka /u/god_is_ender). Really good stuff that I’ve continued to replay throughout the week.
Don't have much time for a write up beyond that - but feel free to track my Japanese album ratings >>> <strong>HERE</strong>
I set myself the challenge of listening to at least 1 album a day descending down RYM's best of all time charts (though I usually manage to do 4-5 a day) I really wanna be expand my taste and be aware of all the essential classics
I'm on page 2 now, listening to Dummy atm
But, it doesn't have to exclusively be from that list. I also check out anything else that catches my attention. Been listening to Melody's Echo Chamber and a lot of Death Grips as well.
