>A single mother and her slacker sister find an unexpected way to turn their lives around in the off-beat dramatic comedy. In order to raise the tuition to send her young son to private school the mom starts an unusual business – a biohazard removal/crime scene clean-up service.
If you don't mind subs then I Saw The Devil is a great one, your main character kind of has the traits you're looking for but acting them out in revenge.
As for English, I suggest Prisoners, good guy but how far would you go for your child.
I made this list months ago. I exported it as a .csv file and with a quick concatenate in excel, I have a list for reddit.
Ed Wood (1994)
>The mostly true story of the legendary "worst director of all time", who, with the help of his strange friends, filmed countless B-movies without ever becoming famous or successful.
All of the following are (more or less) true stories and are generally pretty good. Pretty diverse too so I hope there must be something to your taste in this list:
Moneyball
The Social Network
Catch Me If You Can
Coach Carter
Apollo 13
Unstoppable
Remember The Titans
The Dish
The Way Back
The King's Speech

October Sky
The Aviator
A Beautiful Mind
The Imitation Game
The Man Who Knew Infinity
Snowtown
The Right Stuff
Cinderella Man
Rush
Schindlers List
Saving Mr Banks
The World's Fastest Indian
That is a really difficult question. I think the only movie that comes to mind is Dumb and Dumber and its sequel. They were always losers and they certainly remain losers after the end of the movie. Still, it is a comedy and I do not know if you are looking for a more serious movie.
Possession (1981)
My Nights are More Beautiful Than Your Days
The Most Important Thing is to Love
Betty Blue (director's cut)

And if none of those help here is my watchlist of things I haven't seen but intend to
https://letterboxd.com/thesmokingpants/watchlist/
You can filter the list by avg rating, decade, genre etc....
aka Hixploitation! Although not everything under this banner is horror. Here's a decent list to browse through:
https://www.grindhousedatabase.com/index.php/Category:Hixploitation
Here's another:
From this list of apocalyptic movies the ones that are about viruses are:
Carriers
Here Alone (Zombie)
Hidden
I am Legend (Zombie-esque)
It Comes at Night (Already Mentioned)
The Last Days (Kind of)
Seeing as a lot of zombie movies are also based on this premise, here is a list of zombie-esque movies. From this list, the movies that are mainly based after the zombie apocalypse are:
28 Days Later (Already mentioned)
28 Weeks Later
Antisocial (Kind of)
Antisocial 2
The Battery
Dawn of the Dead
Dead Within
Extinction
The Girl With All the Gifts
Mutants - French movie, the English subtitles are awful so I definitely do not recommend unless you can speak French
Open Grave
Pandemic
Sick, Survive The Night
State of Emergency
Wyrmwood
Inside Llewyn Davis, About Time, Fruitvale Station, The Spectacular Now, The Way Way Back, Dallas Buyers Club. Here's my ranking if you're interested.
The Fifth Element is a really good movie, and maybe it only isn't dystopian :)
I also remembered The Island, it is a nice movie.
Gattaca is a great movie. The idea of gene manipulation is a concept we might very soon be confronted with.
You should try ‘Children of Men’ (Alfonso Cuaron, 2006).
I use ExpressVPN, I get that sometimes with US and UK servers, but usually changing the city works fine. NordVPN is good too.
You can test for a month and ask for your money back if you're not pleased. But I don't have issues at all
Here's a grab bag of some stuff I've got rated highly on my Letterbox'd that may or may not be up your alley. Not necessarily obscure or anything; but if you've missed any of these they'll be worth checking out.
Three Colours Trilogy (Blue, White and Red)
Memories of Murder
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
M
Persona
Blue Velvet (and the rest of Lynch's works)
Incendies
The Lives of Others
Oldboy
Children of Men
Enter the Void
Requiem for a Dream
Nightcrawler
Also chiming in with /u/SteveSonOfJobs in that setting yourself up with Letterboxd is a good way to help find more stuff. Don't worry about having to go through all of your movie history in one go; just take a few hours (until you're bored) to browse through all the films on the site, sorted by popularity to mark them as watched; and mark up the rest as you go and find lists/users matching your taste and interests.
Early days yet, but I've started making a list of apocalyptic / Pandemic movies that is based on my own preferences and recommendations from this sub. Hopefully you might find something you like in it.
Seeing as you mentioned "I am Legend" I'll also link my list for Zombie(esqe) movies. For the "I am Legend" feel I would recommend the following from the list*:
*In no particular order (I'm still to figure out how to do bullet points in reddit)
Dark City kind of has this, a more advanced society using humans.
The Adjustment Bureau has a society of people guiding fate.
House Of Flying Daggers is a Drama/Romance/Action movie.
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is also a great movie.
I have a list of recommended World War II movies here that should give a really diverse overview of the war.
I'm not as knowledgeable about World War I, but I can recommend these:
and I haven't seen these but they're more recent:
Hello, I'm a bot! The movie you linked is called Working Girl, here's some Trailers
this might be helpful:
In the 1980s, policies of perestroika and glasnost saw a loosening of the censorship of earlier eras. A genre known as "chernukha" (from the Russian word for "gore"), including films such as Little Vera, portrayed the harsh realities of Soviet life. Notable films of this period include:
http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1G2-3404100240.html
I've only seen Come and See, but it's a World War II movie (one of the best)
The Man Who Knew Infinity (2015)
About the Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. Though he had almost no formal training in pure mathematics, he made substantial contributions including solutions to mathematical problems considered to be unsolvable. Ramanujan initially developed his own mathematical research in isolation, had the the extraordinary work recognized by University of Cambridge where he continued to research.
Essential viewing

And to just pick a few
Vertigo
Lawrence of Arabia
Blue Velvet
HaraKiri
Sunset Blvd
Mulholland Drive
Possession
Showgirls
All about eve
Possession
Paths of Glory
These are my favorites so I would obviously highly recommend them all: https://letterboxd.com/dexxbateman/list/favorite-movies/
Not on that list but would recommend:
Blue Valentine
Anomalisa (from the same writer as Eternal Sunshine)
The Killing of a Sacred Deer
Children of Men
Snowpiercer
Room
Manchester By the Sea
Annihilation
Hello, I'm a bot! The movie you linked is called The Wackness, here are some Trailers
My top 10 from 2013 (using letterboxd release years):
This is my favorite genre!
All of Charlie Kaufman's films: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Synecdoche New York, Adaptation, Being John Malkovich, Anomalisa, Human Nature
Coen brothers films, especially: A Serious Man, Barton Fink, The Big Lebowski, Raising Arizona, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs
Terrence Malick, particularly: The Tree of Life (my favorite movie of all time), The New World, Days of Heaven, The Thin Red Line
Ingmar Berman (I've only seen these two of his films): Persona, Wild Strawberries
Woody Allen, particularly: Crimes and Misdemeanors, Annie Hall
8 1/2 (1963)
Ikiru (1952)
The Master (2012)
Oslo, August 31st (2011) - another one of my all time favorites
Y Tu Mama Tambien (2001)
Scifi: Moon (2009), Zardoz (1974), Never Let Me Go (2010), Annihilation (2018), 2001 A Space Odyssey (1968)
Tokyo Story (1953)
Taxi Driver (1976)
All of Kaufman's movies vary from somewhat to extremely surreal. Persona, The Tree of Life, and 8 1/2 are also pretty trippy.
Also, here's a link to a huge list of existential movies: https://mubi.com/lists/500-existential-films
Don't be turned off by old movies, they're often way more interesting and experimental than movies try to be today.
This article has some really cool suggestions:
‘Shaun of the Dead’ (Edgar Wright, 2004)
‘Tucker and Dale VS Evil’ (Eli Craig, 2010)
‘Zombieland’ (Ruben Fleischer, 2009)
Have you ever tried any Korean ROM-COMs? They are great and really fun to watch. You can check out this list:
‘200 Pounds Beauty’ (Yong-hwa Kim, 2006)
‘100 Days of Mr. Arrogant’ (Dong-yeob Shin, 2004)
‘My Little Bride’ (Ho-joon Kim, 2004)
‘How to Use Guys with Secret Tips’ (Wonsuk Lee, 2013)
The Gift
Memoir of a Murderer
Oldboy
The Place Beyond the Pines
The Prestige
Se7en
Solace
Wind River
Zodiac
EDIT: Here's a link to a website that shows you all of the mystery/thriller movies that are currently available on Hulu and Netflix in the US
Sorry that this is not a movie, but Sidney Lumet wrote a great book on the movie making process: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004089HZC/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1 . I found it very informative and just hearing how 1 guy does it and the choices he makes informed how I see how other filmmakers handle the same issues Lumet described in the book.
Maybe I don't get how imdb works, but I don't think it shows your ratings in that list? I can see them in your 'ratings' section though. Looks like you give out a lot of 5-7s but not many low scores so that's not all that offensive :)
Anyway, here's my diary. I've seen 180 this year. The worst one was Jack and Jill (unsurprisingly haha). Here's the ones I gave 10-8:
5★
The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Sunset Boulevard (1950)
Terminator 2 (1991)
4.5★
The Apartment (1960)

Straw Dogs (1971)
The Terminator (1984)
The Thin Red Line (1998)
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017)
Unforgiven (1992)
Weird, mildly obscure ones that may come up are Daisies (1968), Valerie and her Week of Wonders, Black Moon (1975), Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles.
This list mostly covers the directors you need to know, although not all the films you would need to know from the directors - https://letterboxd.com/edoardocan/list/an-entry-level-guide-to-art-house-films/ Werner Rainer Fassbinder is missing though, probably some others.
OK last attempt:
The Department Q trilogy (Keeper of Lost Causes, The Absent One and Conspiracy of Faith) may be low key enough to have flown under your radar.
Bad Ben (kind of campy but surprisingly entertaining for a one-man production)
Willow Creek (fairly entertaining found footage horror)
I also have a list on Letterboxd here: https://letterboxd.com/brolanski/list/random-lesser-known-horror-pickups/ with some random lesser known horror (picked up from a reddit thread linked in the list description). Can't vouch for the quality of any of them but may be worth investigating.
Good luck!
Good to see some love for M. I worked my way through Fritz Lang's filmography a few years back actually. It's incredible how he has essential films across 4 decades. It's also pretty interesting to see just how much film and technology moved on. It was almost like watching film history.
Here's how I ranked it if you're curious https://letterboxd.com/nslater90/list/fritz-lang-ranked/
I've really not watched much lately. It's been New Japan Pro Wrestling's Best of the Super Junior's tournament these last few weeks which has taken most of my time. I've only actually watched 6 films this month.
Insignificance (1985) was by far the best of the bunch. Albert Enstein, Marilyn Monroe, Joe DiMaggio, and Joseph Maccarthy all end up meeting one night in a hotel room over the course of one night. Sounds a bit weird when you say it out loud but the film itself makes sense, and is actually kind of sweet and simple.
Hello, I'm a bot! The movie you linked is called About Time, here are some Trailers
Great list you've got. I, also really like The Handmaiden and Your Name. 3-Iron is one of my favourite movies ever.
I'd recommend:
A Brighter Summer Day (Taiwan)
The Attorney
A Girl at My Door
Sunny
Oasis
Poetry
Christmas in August
Han Gong-Ju
I'll make sure to check out Departures.
edit: Heck, I made my own list. Check it out. https://letterboxd.com/solidaritet/list/asian-movies/by/your-rating/
If you haven't seen Saving Private Ryan then that's an obvious starting point just because of its impressive battles.
Band of Brothers is the next step, although The Big Red One condenses everything Band of Brothers does into one regular film.
Come and See is probably the most harrowing war film ever made, so if you're looking to top that you probably never will.
However, I think the greatest war film ever made (and one of the greatest films ever made period) is the ten-hour Human Condition, which is about the Japanese Manchurian campaign.
Here are some others I recommend - but I've only focused on World War II.
The Talented Mr Ripley really good movie.
Leverage is a good series, even though is more of a Robin Hood kind of style, then con.
One of the favourite intelligent comedies that I have watched is definitely A Serious Man.
There Will Be Blood haves nice cinematography and it is a good drama.
I really liked the The 13th Warrior, even though some critics / people don't like it.
"The 13th Warrior currently holds a 33% rating on Rotten Tomatoes which sums it up as "Atmospheric, great sets and costumes, but thin plot."" source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_13th_Warrior
Wild. A woman with a tragic past decides to start her new life by hiking for one thousand miles on the Pacific Crest Trail.
It's quite soothing :-)
Also soothing: http://www.pixelthoughts.co/
Well, one of the legitimately young actors is Angelina Jolie. :P
There are tons of good hacking movies like Hackers, though I am not sure if I catch what you mean by 'a similar atmosphere'. Maybe some 80's and 90's movies? :P
Real Genius (1985)
WarGames (1983)
TRON (1982)
The Lawnmower Man (1992)
Ok, this is going to be the most unnecessary recommendation ever due to the how famous these films are but: Terminator 2 and Escape from New York.
I also found this article about movies similar to The Raid.
`Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels´ (Guy Ritchie, 1998)
`Natural Born Killers´(Oliver Stone, 1999)
`Killing Zoe´ (Roger Avary, 1994)
`The Boondock Saints´ (Troy Duffy, 1999)
‘Kill Bill’ Vol. 1 & 2 (Quentin Tarantino, 2003-2004)
‘In Order of Disappearance’ (Hans Petter Moland, 2014)
‘The Limey’ (Stephen Soderbergh, 1999)
Criticker is by far the best.
I probably use it different than most in that I don't try and come up with some complicated tiered rating system. Rather I assign a score to a movie for each time I've seen it. So if I've seen a movie once I give it a "1", twice a "2", etc. The way their algorithm works it will naturally recommend movies that are in my wheelhouse.
First Strike has a snow fight ski snowboard guns deal in the opening 15-20 minutesish in it.
Love Exposure. It's a Japanese Romantic Melodrama, it's pretty long though. I think 3 or 4 hours, but I was surprised at how attached I became with the MC and how emotional I felt from the movie. It's sort of a feel good melancholy, but I highly recommend it.
My personal favorites are Terms of Endearment and Manchester by the Sea.
I made a list of tearjerkers on Trakt if you want to look through it for something you may not have seen.
In the same vein as the ones you've listed I'd say:
Sex Drive
Can't Hardly Wait
Superbad
The To Do List
Mean Girls
The Hot Chick
Harold and Kumar
Bring It On
and if you're looking for romantic comedies in general I have a long list on trakt you can browse here.
Hello, I'm a bot! The movie you linked is called Delicatessen, here's some Trailers

Those are the best happy GLBTA films I can think of. You might be interested in a list of LGBTQ movies I made.
I just got it for Christmas, but here’s the link to the poster on amazon!
It's on Amazon, and also available on Bluray. https://www.amazon.com/Last-Black-Man-San-Francisco/dp/B07S7SRBVN
But depending on where you live it may still be available in cinemas too. For example, it is not released in my country until later this month, so I might go watch it again on the big screen.
Release dates here: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4353250/releaseinfo?ref_=tt_ov_inf
The Vast of Night - Top notch indie SF film. Set in a rural NM town in the late ’50s, it follows a switchboard operator and a radio dj as they try to investigate a strange sound that is affecting the radio and telephone systems. It involves researching past events and witnesses as well as an investigation of an ongoing event. I think the balance between the two will match what you are looking for.
Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom - The other film that is always mentioned in the same breath as A Serbian Film
Come and See - Russian WWII movie from the perspective of a teenager. It's particularly horrific because the events are largely true.
Kill List - Follows a hitman who is taking his first assignment after a yearlong hiatus due to a job that went really wrong. For how unknown this film is, there are a lot of discussions about the ending.
The Vast of Night - Top notch indie SF film where the aspect ratio varies throughout the film. Set in a rural NM town in the late ’50s, it follows a switchboard operator and a radio dj as they try to investigate a strange sound that is affecting the radio and telephone systems
If youre craving some newer spider-man stuff you can't go wrong with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018). It's one of the best animated movies made in recent times
Apocalyptic:
Apocalyptic with a Sci-Fi feel:
Apocalyptic with a Zombie theme:
Most Zombie movies could be thought of as apocalyptic, but the ones I mentioned here are the more recent ones I feel have the most "apocalyptic" feel to them. Here's a list of post 2000 zombie movies, just in case there's anything else in there that takes your fancy.
Here's a list of Asian movies that I've seen and ranked from best to worst in my opinion - https://letterboxd.com/handzum/list/asian-cinema-ranked/
Might interest someone, recommendations are welcome too
It's amazing how many movies there are. I've seen plenty of movies, over 650 according to Letterboxd. But of the top 72 movies that you rated most highly, I've seen only 7.
Hello, I'm a bot! The movie you linked is called Don't Breathe, here are some Trailers
Here's a list of comedy movies I started recently. It's based on recommendations from this sub. Hopefully you might find something to meet your needs in there. Sorry there aren't any notes, I haven't had time to add them yet.
Same list on Letterboxd and here it is again on trakt :)
I've never used taste. I watch most through my media centre which at the core is Kodi with the trakt plugin to update this trakt acc and I use data form that to do updates on this Letterboxd acc.
Hello, I'm a bot! The movie you linked is called The Majestic, here are some Trailers
Technically it's a bannable offense, but I'm letting it slide because you clearly stated that you were looking to pay for it. Consider it a serious warning, though. Read through our rules in the sticky carefully.
As for finding where to watch a movie legitimately, Just Watch is what I use.
https://www.justwatch.com/us/tv-show/what-we-do-in-the-shadows
It's on the FX Now app, since it's an FX show. Maybe it will hit hulu later. Also available for purchase.
The energy vampire they introduce in the american show is like the MVP for me. So fucking hilarious.
A few of those are also in my list of favorite movies. Here's my list:
https://letterboxd.com/dexxbateman/list/favorite-movies/
Not on my list of favorites but also really loved:
Blue Valentine
Spring Breakers
The Killing of a Sacred Deer
Manchester By The Sea
The Place Beyond the Pines
Drive
Stand By Me.
But if you're curious this was my last attempt at a top 50 https://letterboxd.com/nslater90/list/top-50-updated-for-2017/detail/
Though reading back over it I already want to change the order haha
You are def going to find better samurai films. The new star treks are garbage.
Harakiri
Sword of doom
Lone Wolf and cub
Seven Samurai
Yojimbo
13 assassins
Hidden fortress
Samurai assassin
Goyokin
Ran
Some Sci fi
I have lots of ratings you can browse, my highest rated Thrillers or these are my highest rated Crime movies
Have you watched Buffy with her? I know many men who love Buffy and almost every fan would love to get someone else hooked.
I'd say check out some of Robert Downey Jr's comedies from the 90's: Only You, Heart & Souls, Chances Are. Here is a list of fantasy comedies that I feel have a bit more punch than a standard formulaic rom-com, she might like TiMER in particular because it has a Buffy alum in it: Fantasy Comedies Trakt
Hello, I'm a bot! The movie you linked is called Don't Breathe, here's some Trailers

There is a full cast read on Audible. Since the book is all correspondence or journals it lends itself very well to the audio-book. I listened to it over a couple of weekends while hiking last fall, and it scared the crap out of me.
EDIT:
Just realized i was in movie suggestions. I'm going to leave my comment and take whatever ridicule i get.
The one i watched :
Good Will hunting (1997)
Finding forrester (2000)
Primer (2004)
Little man tate (1991)
Searching for bobby fischer (1993)
> (not too sure if this is the one i have in mind). You could maybe try any of the "chess movies" (i didn't watch them though, so i can't recommend) https://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/another-list-of-20-chess-movies
Les Emotifs anonymes (2010) [featuring a Chocolate Maker Genius Woman, but it is not the focus of the movie, and it is in french as far as i know]
Not a movie, but you could also try the Columbo tv show (1971 - 1990).
A Beautiful Mind (2001) [didn't really liked it, but this is a classic]
Hey, sorry about this. I made this bot and I get the information from Can I Stream It, and they didn't list the movie as having streaming options, which is why it wasn't listed. I looked for this movie on Hulu, and you're right, it is streaming there, so I'll send an e-mail to can I stream it to see if they can fix that.
hmm, welp no biggie! I work in the media dept. of my local library and get asked for "uncommon" recommendations all the time, and my favorite site for something like this is Kids-in-mind.
It can look up a movie for you and gives a quick synopsis, rating, and various parameters of rating based on gore, sex, and profanity, and they do everything from kids movies to adult movies.
I mean like from something as tame as Finding Nemo up to "torture porn" like Hostel.
Fair warning, iirc it's a nonprofit run by a faith based group, but their ratings and reviews are very objective, and they don't review based on spiritual content, again that's iirc.
Im probably going to get downvoted for this but what the hell.

You said you only have access to NetFlix and have a tight budget, so try this:

my pick for the first 10 results I got would be BOYHOOD. Its a singular film that was made over 12 years. You actually get to see the actors age as they get physically older during the course of that period - like really age- not SFX or makeup. Its really something. Quite long though at nearly 3 hours, I think?

Further down the list, Dallas Buyers Club is a good film, as is Spotlight, which is an interesting snapshot of history, but quite serious. I loved Wind River, and I thought Black Panther was a very capable super hero pic with broad appeal. Of those, I would say Black Panther would probably be the most failsafe for most viewers if you have not already seen it :) Ex Machina is an excellent Sci Fi, but a very serious film. If you like offbeat, slice-of-life and interesting characters, Tangerine is fantastic.
I wanted to recommend The Running Man since I can't remember any other movies with similar plot, but The Running man isn't a movie that can describe or even project what Pollock meant in They Shoot Horses Don't They?. I also can't compare Jane Fonda playing cynical Gloria, with Arnold, but I remembered that movie because of the ruthlessness between contestants.
Have you watched The Scalphunters it is also a good movie that Pollack directed.
I'm not sure, but I think some Bruce Lee movies are free style combat.
Like Fists Of Bruce Lee
I don't know why, but I first thought of Yamakasi, even though they are not as free style as you want, it is a good movie.
In that case, you should at LEAST take a look at this trailer. The movie is quite intense and not so much action-driven as the trailer might make it seem. You should see it for yourself and decide if it's something for you. I found it deeply moving and if you have anything for photography/cinematography: This movie is off the chart. It's thát well done.
Edit: Then MAYBE I should add the trailer-url.
http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/independent/cityoflifeanddeath/
Iv been trying to find strange visually stunning just all around good movies and found this super list. Certainly not all of these movies are body horror but there are definitely a lot of them on this list that would fit what your looking for, just like tons of stuff most people have never heard of. https://mubi.com/lists/366-weird-movies
Slightly off topic but check out his 1000 favorite movies.
This list is basically 1000 movie recommendations to me. I wanna eventually see every movie on the list.
I use Criticker, is that okay too? I've never heard of trakt.tv, but it looks like a similar approach to last.fm, but with movies (also, they literally call it "scrobbling").
Anyways, here's my Criticker profile
Gangs of Wasseypur It's a 5 hour and 20 minute Bollywood epic about a blood feud between gangs that spans multiple generations. Currently stands at a 95% on RT and an 8.3 on IMDB.
Edit: Also, I read the 2016 part after I had written this, but I'm gonna keep the post for visibility.
Aside from all the rad movies listed here I suggest King Boxer (and a lot of other Shaw Brother films). This was the first SB film and the first I rec to any one new to the genre. Also The Street Fighter with Sonny Chiba is top notch
Definitely check out Chungking Express. Amazing movie, I watch it a few times every year. The soundtrack, cinematography and actors are just excellent to me. Wong Kar-wai has also directed other good movies that tell a love story such as In the Mood for Love.
I have some favorite WWII films here and can recommend these for emotional sadness:
And I highly recommend Come and See.
If you want a new movie check out Hacksaw Ridge.
It's harder than it sounds. I'm doing the same thing. My original plan was only movies I hadn't seen, but then I had to watch some I already had as like a palette cleanser. Watching a lot of stinckers will do that. Also, I skip some days, and then have to make them up.
Here's my film diary for the year. Lot's of movies on that list to get you started. I also keep an Excel sheet with grades and places you can watch them, which I uploaded to Google here (my grades are how well I liked the film, not how good I think the film is). 119 so far.
Good luck!
