Have you tried third party controller mapping apps? The gamepad support on Mac is pretty garbage, but generally any non-xinput generic USB gamepad will work, as well as Playstation controllers. Sometimes you need third party mapping utilities to make it work such as this
https://joystickmapper.com/ Would be the closest equivalent. I use it for some games which wont recognize my controllers (second controller for overcooked 2).
However, ds4 support should work in the first place, and buying this app shouldn't be needed.
I found links in your comment that were not hyperlinked:
I did the honors for you.

joystick mapper osx app, i set the triggers to flag and unflag, face buttons to 1/2/3/4 stars and joystick to navigate forward and back, all with one hand. likewise, can use a number of controller/utilities to do the same, I like the joycon because it is one handed and i can lounge any which way.
Basically, the idea is to map keyboard shortcuts to bluetooth input
