Now that I'm on a computer: looks like there's Text Editor Anywhere if you're on Windows that does it for Chrome and pretty much anything else, which is pretty neat. For other OSes, TextAid will do it in Chrome. Because of the security setup in Chrome, you have to run a small webserver for it to communicate through, but I've used it or a similar thing in the past, and it's pretty slick.
> The only major downside is that it forces you to type "_" if you navigate with your keyboard by typing the first few letters of a folder to select it.
Check out Listary. It's an extension to Windows Explorer that lets you type portions and fuzzily match folder/file names. I never have a Windows installation without it.
Directory Opus - I wouldn't want to use Windows without it. Highly customizable in look and feel and so many convenient options!
I also recommend Listary. Not a file explorer but a nice search tool and even better program starter. Best search tool IMO is Everything, which is free but really deserving of a price tag.
For Windows users, http://www.listary.com/text-editor-anywhere lets you use whatever text editor you like to fill out those forms, and has the side effect that everything you enter is saved in a file, so you can probably recover it after a failed page/crashed browser.
This features especially:

The menu is opened with double left click on an empty space (works in file manager and desktop).
I used to use Launchy, then swtiched to the Start Menu, now using Listary. http://www.listary.com/
Hain looks interesting, how's the speed and memory usage? It's probably a non-issue these days but seems like Electron is heavy for something like this.
Try Find and Run Robot. Is a free, pretty capable launcher in active development.
I use Listary which designates itself as a search utility but it can also launch programs. I love it, paid for the pro version but the free version is very good as well.
Can confirm, the Linux search is way better! in KDE you can also press ALT+SPACE to open the search window. https://gfycat.com/healthyevergreenbufflehead
I am still forced to use windows where I work and I can recommend a similar tool:
Listary (not free but worth it!)
Everything (free, ultra fast desktop search engine, similar to linuxs locate)
I use launchy, alt+space and write 1-3 characters, enter and any program that I use 99% of the time is open.
http://www.launchy.net/ Cons: Development stopped last time I heard
http://www.listary.com/ Haven't tried this but been suggested as a successor for Launchy
You can thank me later.
Edit: while I'm at it, install PeaZip (7zip with a nicer interface), Malwarebytes, VLC, Avast, WinDirStat, Sumatra PDF, and Paint.NET.
Also http://www.listary.com/ is the best thing ever.
There's also Listary.
Idk if Everything has a similar feature (since it's been a while from the last time I used it) but you can double-tab ctrl to open up a search bar. Basically makes the mouse obsolete.
I get similar results... Though this may largely be because I don't use discord and therefore don't have it installed. If I install it it shows up immediately after install.
Start->Search functions primarily through the Search Index, which should be configured and running. Worth checking that. You should be able to see it using "Indexing Options" ... Depending on how your search is working that might be hard to find. You can start it directly with Windows Key+R and the command:
rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL srchadmin.dll
The default index also only searches in certain locations for (presumably) performance reasons. By default this includes folders like the start menu and documents folders. It doesn't include program files folder(s), however, or say other disk drives. If you are using a "Portable" program or if you deleted the shortcut for a program in the start menu then it won't very likely won't appear in Start->Search. You can add areas you want to be included in results. I added a few folders on my Data drives for example.
if everything looks in order, you can use The advanced button to access additional settings. The rebuild option might help there.
Personally I've found that Windows Search usually works but for those times it doesn't or doesn't fit what I want to do, I have alternatives installed. Specifically, I often fallback to Voidtools Everything particularly when searching for very specific files or files I know part of the name of. Windows Search is useless for that even if the location is indexed. "Listary" is another program which seeks to effectively replace Start->Search itself as an App Launcher which could be worth a look.
I use listary all the time which has some really cool features including an instant file/app search you can invoke by pressing the ctrl key twice.
Also finally got into https://www.gpsoft.com.au nearly 2 years ago which has some great features over traditional explorer.
Spotlight is one of the best things about mac. Discovered Listary the other day which is basically Spotlight's equivalent for Windows. I can finally fucking find stuff in Windows 10 now, it's the best
Not quite what you are describing. https://www.stardock.com/products/fences/ can be set to folders and their contents.
Also https://www.voidtools.com/ "Everything" can be used with a hotkey. Not sure about a dock.
http://www.listary.com/ is another alternative.
This game looks sweet! It looks like monster hunter + wow + maybe dark souls difficulty added in there? Please correct me if I'm wrong, only know about the game from this post.
My comment is about awesome software I like to suggest to anyone willing to take a look.
Hate windows search? Want to be able to open/search your PC almost instantly? Take a look here: http://www.listary.com/
I am not affiliated with this company at all, I just really find the tool useful. I also change the activation key to ctrl+ space so it's like a Mac spotlight search.
Thanks for the give away!
Can't access that link, but thanks for letting me know. This is a little niche, but if you could hint in the general direction of where I can find a download for Listary 5 Pro (http://www.listary.com/) I would really appreciate it! :P
The only place I've managed to find it so far is tehparadox, and some other user said that particular upload was a virus. Thanks.
I started using Listary (http://www.listary.com/) and will never look back. It's so god damn fast and searches for files, application etc in all directories which is incredible.
Native Windows search is so bad and it pisses me off every day.
I use listary, and it kinda has a feature for that actually, unfortunatly only when you get the pro version.
I kinda see it working, but not most of the time. The directory structure gives context to the files. A file in the views folder is most likely a view. So you don't need to name every file "viewX.js" or something to give the file itself context.
Notepad++ is great – I still use it – but you should really commit to trying Vim if you like useful shortcuts. This is a good intro to why it's shortcuts are worlds beyond almost every other editor:
Honestly, it's painful to type without Vi(m) commands. I even have Text Editor Anywhere setup so I could even type this with Vim.
I use Listary, It's so awesome for fast navigating around your PC. CTRL+G opens the last folder you used, so just enter the folder you wanna save a file to once and press CTRL+G everytime you wanna go there fast or just add it to favorites and Right-click to open a menu with favorites and all your recent used folders and files. Example
There's also Grammarly Lite - Smart Spellchecker
Just a thought, you could always use something like It's All Text! or if you're on Windows, Text Editor Anywhere - Edit Text Anywhere with Your ... that allow editing and thus spell checking etc., with your favourite editor
I used to be attached to tree style tab! Actually I had a hard time leaving firefox myself, and used tons of plugins, but most were related to web development. When FF got really buggy and Chrome was twice as fast, I jumped ship. Then I discovered chrome's developer tools were better as well.
Got all of these from a minute or two googling. If they aren't quite what you need, there are many other possibilities. Search for FF extension name chrome
