In the future, when something similar to DeX (not DeX since it's proprietary, so not very useful, but rather something like maru) gets powerful enough to run most things one would need, the idea is to have docking stations at home, school, work, etc and just use your computer that you carry in your pocket all the time. I mean most people could probably get by with that already, if they just need a browser and an email client
if you want a laptop, get a used ibm thinkpad. those things are tanks.
otherwise if you have a tv and a keyboard, even a $40 raspberry pi will do.
If your mobile phone is android, you might be able to flash Maru OS on it and use it as a PC
Well, that's not true. Motorola also has their own desktop mode. And OnePlus. And Xiaomi. There is probably more.
I believe it's possible for smartphones to become the only computer unit in a person's life. Smartphone + lapdock for portable work and smartphone + monitor + wireless mouse/keyboard for home work. I'm looking for a ROM (or maybe a different OS from Android, like Fuchsia OS maybe?) that brings that possible future closer.
I found MaruOS a few minutes ago, for example.
I just found MaruOS. It appears to be exactly what I was looking for. They are a little small apparently. They support only Nexus phones and one Samsung's device. Hopefully they'll have a bright future.
I'm changing jobs and have to give my current phone back to my employer. Since my Nexus 5 is in relatively good shape, I don't really want to buy another phone right now.
I'm giving MaruOS a try now, mainly because it's open source and it was easy to find the official releases. It seems good so far, though a little choppy compared to stock.
If anyone has more suggestions I'd be glad to try them!
Maru states:
> The Pixel does not support HDMI so there is no need to purchase HDMI adapters. Please use a wireless adapter instead. First generation has been tested and confirmed to work at 720p with Chromecast. - https://maruos.com/docs/devices/sailfish.html#install-maru-via-twrp
It's baked in to OneUI, so no. You'd have to use one of the 3rd party "desktop" apps, or run an OS like MaruOS instead - https://maruos.com/ - although Maru only works on older Nexus and Pixel devices.

They used to support the Galaxy S9 if I'm not mistaken. Also, the Nexus 6P recently got added. I think the MHL support is pretty limiting.
I honestly couldn't tell you. I have heard of Maruos from another post here on r/lineageos, and to me that sounds the most promising. It's a Custom Rom built on Aosp but with Debian somehow built in (possibly as a chroot, but don't quote me on that) and uses xfce for its desktop environment. I've personally never tried it, but you could always take a look
Im not sure, but it works flawlessly on my nexus 5. When casted to a screen or plugged in via MHL/Slimport it boots a full debian desktop and projects it to the external display while the phone/tablet is still usable. Check out the official website https://maruos.com/
