So, would your everyday map before the change have looked a bit more like this map? I suppose no continents really line up on the globe as such, but if you burl this globe around, does it still seem wrong no matter what?
Look at distance between Greenland and Iceland. More realistic: http://www.meteoearth.com/#/,-16.71,67.95,4.21,4,1,1,0,0,0,time=1429365204 . The distance between them is of the same size as the Iceland itself.
Interestingly Norway (or a country directly west of Sweden) is colored light blue but no data exists for it in the full survey linked to by the article.
If that's from darksky.net I don't think they actually take precipitation data for the whole world - just the bits where people actually use that website. (I might be wrong though). Anyway, the map on that site looks like that (rain only in the UK and USA) at any time - a week or so ago I was also surprised because I thought it is only raining in London...
I think the precipitation map on http://www.meteoearth.com looks more probable. https://www.accuweather.com/en/world/satellite shows only clouds cover, but you can assume some of those over east Asia are rain clouds too.
EDIT: If you do insist on darksky.net then compare their precipitation radar to precipitation forecast - the latter definitely uses a global data source and there is a huge disproportion of where the rain appears.
I know it’s winter and all that but the world looks more cloudy more often to me.

Bear in mind the centre of this country is a large desert, Majority of the population live on the east coast. I'll also drop my favourite weather website here for you as well. Its the google maps of weather. you can really see the globe live. Fascinating to see the patterns across the globe. http://www.meteoearth.com/
Yeah its Summer in Australia, unfortunate that this comes right when New South Wales is in drought, and the fires are still going. Wanted to share a cool website with you all. Its really the google earth of the weather. You can check on patterns or trends live. http://www.meteoearth.com/
