Buy this book, it is amazing from start to finish, especially if you know a bit of 20th century history (or know someone who does). The Onion upped their game for this book.

create a political system that says everyone's flaws or virtue comes from their membership of a specific social group.
Say that history is formed principally of a battle between these groups.
Act surprised when the situation devolves into factions accusing each other of being part of the wrong group and trying to stamp each other out.
The fact we still treat communism like a light hearted joke "Aww, well it was a good idea that just went a bit awry", rather than the sickening doctrine it is, just shows how little we learn from history.

No, there she was looking at everyday life of people interned in mental institutions. Her action was dedicated to their problems.
>I have just returned from a trip to Europe. Across Europe, there was not a single word of respect for Trump. The constant refrain was extreme puzzlement and deep consternation. How did America fall so far so fast? What do we need to do to survive? > The US has probably never before had a delusional President, one who speaks gibberish, insults those around him including his closest associates, and baffles the world. By instinct, we strive to make sense of Trump's nonsense, implicitly assuming some hidden strategy. There is none.
Instead of politician, Boris Johnson could make a great university professor
He wrote a superb biography of Winston Churchill and a great political history of The Roman Empire.
I'm sure the students would love him
From the top of my head:
There is a lot more, but I’m on mobile now — I also can’t link to RT.
> Hitler had to send troops to Greece to finish what the Italians could not.
The Greeks fought like absolute demons in World War II. The historical narrative on that is garbage. They're basically right up there with the Finns in terms of punching above their weight.

Currently the cheapest rail fare from Manchester to London today is £52 one way.
The cheapest Ryan Air return ticket from Manchester to Barcelona today is £23.
Huh. I was wondering why this looked familiar: I took that photo in Berlin, during the QtCon 2016.
Good to see u/jbkempf and VLC getting some love outside the Free Software bubble. I had the opportunity of talking to him live and he told me how they have to fight off patent trolls and aggressive copyright lawyers all the time. He also told me a fun story about the beginning of the project.
Just be ruthless, ascend to the top, and strip the democratic system all the while consolidating power! Might make you feel better.
I truly wonder how many people suspect the coup was just a false flag narrative to justify more power. The Shock Doctrine all over again.
I think a lot of the posters here are missing the point. This is about leadership of the broader EU project that goes beyond nationalism. People in Europe naturally look towards Germany as the strongest economy and one of the largest countries as a leader, especially given that the UK is not interested and France is in an apparent permanent existential crisis.
However, what this crisis is demonstrating is that Germany is not prepared to put the interest of the broader EU project above its own national interests. This is their right of course, but from my point of view it does seem to run counter to the idea of an EU superpower.
Furthermore, the narrative from the Germans and Nordics, some Easterns, seem more about blaming Greece than about the broader EU project. Sure, Greece fucked up and they need reforms, but its petty to keep humiliating an entire nation by playing the blame game. I honestly hoped Germany or France would have had the bigger picture in mind and showed more statesmanship. Surely, the EU wants Greece to stay in the EU and conduct reforms that a) don't create undue suffering and poverty and b) return the economy to positive growth so that it can pay back the loans.
I don't necessarily blame Germany for its approach, but it doesn't exactly fill me with confidence about their leadership in the EU.
Yes, the deep state....
I learned a lot about the deep state by reading Steven Segal's Way of the Shadow Wolves.
Truly enlightening...
The explanation is simple: pay-per-play, the press is just as corrupt as the politicians. The publications receive money (usually officially for "ads") in exchange for allowing "guests" to write editorials.
This is not just the British press (The Guardian, The Telegraph, The Daily Mail, etc.) who attack Romania's fight against corruption, but parts of the American press as well.
For instance, a couple of years ago, New York Times published an editorial titled "Romania’s Anti-Corruption Mania":
> BUCHAREST, Romania — With its wide, tree-lined boulevards and Belle Époque buildings, this city was once known as Little Paris. Today, Romania’s capital feels more reminiscent of the French Revolution as it is roiled by a legal reign of terror. [...] Romania’s anti-corruption campaign has rapidly metastasized into an illiberal crusade. The public’s insatiable appetite for justice only exacerbates the threat to the country’s democratic future. > > Romania’s democratic development would be better served by a public process whereby past misdeeds were acknowledged, documented and then forgiven.
France still has quite a few issues to deal with. It's net debt is way too high. It needs to do a much better job on employment.
But by and large, I have always chuckled when I've read Western neoliberals attacking France and demanding that they go through somekind of Thatcher-ite revulsion, even if the IMF(!) of all people have thrown cold water on the agenda.
Let's not forget that the French worker is one of the most productive in the entire OECD, significantly more so than the British one.
It also has lower poverty, a much better current account deficit etc. Sure, the French economy needs its reforms like any other, but it is fundamentally a sound, diversified and modern economy.

Is there at least fuckign something about what russians don't lie?
This is what happens when your religious text is one half Bible, and the other half "The Art of War". Despite how much they may deny it, Islam at it's core is a religion for warriors, written by a prophet who was also a conquerer.
PSA: Use this helpful "USB condom" (it has only power pins, no data pins).
Also, a story:
Once tried to charge a phone from the USB port in the plane owned by a Chinese airline. Realized my stupidity in 1 second, quickly pulled the USB cord. The software playing movies etc. in the back-of-the-seat screen/charger crashed.
This should not happen if there is no data exchange (maybe it can if the power distribution is really bad, but this does not sound likely). The damn thing probably tried to act as an USB host, not a mere charger.
This is lovely. I am in love with the "what if?" - situation where Novgorod at least wasn't destroyed by Muscovy. The city represented such a different way of organizing for the Rus.
This is kind of a story that requires the reaction "awww...".

Well, tbh, Simonyan is not a journalist, she is propagandist, she has a reputation of being against free speech and journalism. Many of journalists working on RT do it for money, though Im not quite sure about Simonyan, she is fucked in the head. In Russia, if you are jounalist, you dont have many choices. Go work for government propaganda, get a safe( and sometimes quite big) paycheck or try to work for the remnants of independent media(which mostly operate in internet nowadays), be constantly afraid of government continous crackdown, harassment and intimidation, even having a criminal case opened if your reporting touched some important figure.
It's interesting (and not really surprising) that RT and specifically Margarita Simonyan support and actively participate the campaign against the independent news in Russia who are currently being designated foreign agents or undesirable organisation.
Sponsorblock is also amazing if you love YouTube videos but don't want to hear about Skillshare, , or NordVPN in every single video.

It's quite simple, the median salary is lower than the minimum salary of most of other Eurozone countries. Why? Well, i have no clue. This means the the wage gap is much greater than the price gap. Detailed article by meduza.io (in Russian). Long story short, it was a popular regional station in Tomsk, it operated since 1991, won record amount of TEFI television awards among Russian regional channels, and it had no financial problems. Then in 2014 the channel was just turned off air for 1.5 months (!) because of mysterious "technical problems". Then Roskomdanzor warned the channel for being off air for more than 1 month. Then in November Roskomdanzor at first prolonged it license to broadcast to 2025, and then in a few weeks revoked it, claiming it was a mistake. 3000 persons protested against shutting down of the channel (huge number for Tomsk), but fruitlessly. Aaaaannd it's gone, the channel is dead.

Let me introduce you to the concept of an Analogy
It is sometimes easier to illustrate an abstract concept by analogy with something concrete.
More r/nottheonion , post source is Eurogamer, which is an established game news site. Their source is an Italian news paper Corrieri Della Serra. Also the application actually exists JC Go.
I think you misunderstand. He is talking about the content of those cables.
The first one says that Merkel, in 2012, thought that even a haircut would not suffice to bring Greece on track.
This is in extreme contrast with the "official" position I'm reading every day in the German media.
EDIT: Here's the direct link to the cables.
Not to mention the fact that we're not just talking about a few dozen people, but about 110,000 people in the nine months after the coup being detained in the ninc e months after the coup attempt. More people have been detained since: 133,257 according to this site.
Then there are the 150,000+ that lost their job because of that purge.
No, Khrushchev did not approve Stalinist policies on a personal level, trying to undo most of them while in office in the "thaw". He wrote extensively in his memoirs about his dislike of them and the guilt he felt for not being able to do more. Don't get me wrong the man believed in the oppressive nature of the USSR(at least until Brezhnev overthrew him) but he wasn't a dictator on the level of Stalin in any way.
I would recommend https://www.amazon.com/Lenins-Tomb-Last-Soviet-Empire/dp/0679751254 for a somewhat contemporary and at the same time retrospective view other USSR and its biggest figures. Tragic and sometimes funny.

Just one more case of politicians failing to understand how the internet works.
let's remember folks, Islamic anti-Semitism existed long before Israel and was this wasn't unnoticed by certain people.
They are guerilla, their only goal is to use minimum resources for maximum effect. I hate how that works out in this situation, but if you look at let's say the Vietnam war, they also used guerilla tactics to overcome superior force. Heck Sun Tzu wrote about that way of fighting in "The Art of War". We as Europeans don't feel like we're in a war, but these terrorist are at war with the west whether we like it or not.
There's no example provided on what her exact words were. If it was something like.
''Men are stupid and we would be better off with only women'''is harsh, but muh free speech counts in this case for me.
''Kill all men and we should start now'', that is pretty big incitement territory.
Mostly muh freespeech people show up because some people like to interpret criticism or general dislike as incitement. Mostly this is a grey area remark.
This case is most likely a bogus one made the the authorities to serve as an example where there is a breach against free speech, but I can't check it.
Also they already persecuted a man for mysoginist comments before as someone poster earlier, just above your comment. So it isn't out of reality to see this case on the opposite spectrum :

That thread yesterday was a real battlefield. I knew /r/Europe was targeted by right-wing extremists but I had no idea there were so many of them.
"If it's a Yes, we will say 'on we go', and if it's a No we will say 'we continue'."
"Britain is different. Of course there will be transfers of sovereignty. But would I be intelligent to draw the attention of public opinion to this fact?"
"Monetary policy is a serious issue. We should discuss this in secret, in the Eurogroup [...] I'm ready to be insulted as being insufficiently democratic, but I want to be serious [...] I am for secret, dark debates."
"We decide on something, leave it lying around and wait and see what happens. If no one kicks up a fuss, because most people don't understand what has been decided, we continue step by step until there is no turning back."
"When it becomes serious, you have to lie."

I finally found a recent(ish) copy of Alexa's Top 500 list of most visited websites. As before, I've only included European-founded or owned sites, rather than European-based sites (as otherwise over half the list would be google, amazon, ebay, etc).
Identifying site ownership was tricky in some cases. This article helped with some of the pornographic sites, but not all (for example, xHamster is registered in Cyprus for tax reason but its owners and founders are unnamed). I didn't make much effort to identify any of the many malware sites that appear in the list.
The most represented countries are Russia [12], UK [8], Germany [7], France/Spain/Sweden [4], Poland [3] and the Netherlands [2].
> English people have significantly less Irish ancestry (just 20% of their genetic make-up) on average compared to people living in Scotland (43.84%), Wales (31.99%) and Northern Ireland (48.49%). English residents do however have the highest amount of Scandinavian (9.39%) and Western European (French/German) (20.45%) ancestry.
Hmm. But English have higher %s of Scandinavian DNA than Scotland.
Scottish DNA: > Irish (43.84%), British (26.18%), Europe West (13.05%), Scandinavia (7.19%), Iberian Peninsula (2.30%), Eastern Europe (1.68%), Italy/Greece (1.63%), Finland/Northwest Russia (1.31%)
Pretty sure 26.18% > 7.19% ?
As a follow-up, I would like to post a link to their official VKontakte account, requesting anyone who has contacts with Reddit administration to get in touch with them, so that they can deal with the matter.
> The fish stinks from the head, as we say.
I was at the counter-demonstration in Leipzig. What they say is one thing, but the local organizer and main speaker is a vendor of Nazi memorabilia. Here's an article from 2009 (so, not connected to X-gida) describing what he had tried to sell:
> Zum Beispiel ein Hakenkreuz, das auf einem Sockel stand, mit Hakenkreuzen versehene Hitler-, Himmler- und Goebbels-CDs sowie als geschmackloser Höhepunkt ein Paar Originalschuhe aus dem KZ Mauthausen.
For example a swastika fixed on a pedestal, swastika decorated Hitler, Himmler and Goebbels CDs, and as a climax of tastelessness a pair of original shoes from the Mauthausen concentration camp.
Or take the Pegida founder himself. He got deported from South Africa, where he had lived under an assumed identity to dodge the jail sentence that he had been given in Germany for the 16 burglaries he was convicted of. When he got out of jail, he went on to sell cocaine. Now he holds speeches about "criminal foreigners".
Saying "we're entirely reasonable concerned citizens, not racists, promised!" just won't cut it.

Unfortunately, average salary means nothing. A small group of very rich people drive the averages up, like Amancio Ortega in Spain. I found a map of net medians wages, but it's outdated from 2014.

V4 plans to send troops to strengthen Libyan borders. People crying over V4 not wanting to help solve the problem are pretty uninformed. No wonder, though. For example if you share this kind of information on this sub, it gets immediately buried with downvotes.
With all atrocious Kadyrov's policies it's not as simple to fix everything as removing him. Apparently even Chechen refugees in Berlin try to compete with Kadyrov's faithful and righteous image, hunt for Chechens that try to integrate in European culture and beat them up, and even their relatives try to smuggle them back to Chechnya to kill them there.

Greece (source) and Croatia on the Balkans, and Spain/Portugal in the west. Outside of the EU, Japan is growing really fast.
It's completely absurd to call those areas colonies. They were Christian, Greek speaking people who belonged in Roman Empire, had the same culture, architecture, fought in the military and shared the same fate ultimately. There were patriarchs in Antioch, Jerusalem and Alexandria just like in Constantinopole and Rome.

Girl (13) almost drowned after kayak trip on Meuse river
A trip on the Meuse with a kayak is almost fatal for a 13-year-old girl from Maasmechelen on Saturday. The girl came with her boat in a rapid acceleration in the Meuse in Kotem, after which her kayak ended up under a fallen tree and turned over. "The girl was lying under water for a few minutes, but was pulled out of the water by passing kayakers", said by the Fire Department of Maasmechelen. The girl was taken to Maastricht hospital with a German trauma helicopter. Yesterday the girl was still lying there, although she is out of mortal danger.

As a Cypriot and neighbor to Turkey, it's always been the argument that a democratic turkey is the best turkey. Pushing them towards the EU was especially beneficial to us. But at some point we as a community will need to make the decision that Turkey is not an ally anymore and is working towards an Islamist agenda.
The only thing that may turn them around is financial ruin (which is around the corner The situation in Turkey is dire and nobody seems to be batting an eye about it. All these supposed "gullenists"are about to get murdered.

Sure, it's from Meduza, a Russian news web site:
Translation:
Passengers of the Swift train that runs between Lower Novgorod and Moscow have found an unusual sign that points to an emergency exit. Along with Cyrillic characters, it also sports a Braille text for the blind and sight-impared.
However, the problem is that the Braille text is smooth - according to the author of the photograph, it is printed on "plain paper".
It should also be noted that the sign says "Salida de emergencia" - "emergency exit" in Spanish. It could be explained by the fact that the Swift trains are adapted project of the Spanish Talgo train.
And what exactly do you expect him to cite for you? Would you like to read the entire Hungarian Media Law? If so, here you are, it's 200 pages long, so have fun with that.
But don't be surprised if you don't find a compromising passage saying "From now on, I, Viktor Orbán, declare all media to be under my direct control. Because fuck free press, muhahaha".
Because that's not how law works. It's often more about what's not there than what's there. It's about how vague the formulations are and what kind of space for different interpretations they give. It's also about the entire social climate - about the civic society, independent judges and Constitutional court - their strength or weakness is crucial when it comes to preventing controversial interpretations or misuse of law.
So to ask to quote the part of the law, where it says that media in Hungary are not free is just ignorant. Of course no one will openly put that in the law. That doesn't say anything about the actual reality though. If you really are interested in the media situation in Hungary, you can read this analysis, it sumps it up pretty nicely.
Always those darn' Germans, eh?
We have (way) more problems than a dominant Germany and immigrants in Europe, but if we keep on reasoning like you do, we'll never get to more and closer military integration and cooperation.
Cause there will always be something.
I wonder where you get your numbers from. Half of Europe sacrificed to Germany? Not in my country. And a third of Europe is Germany's cheap labour? So they have 250 million cheap people working over there?
Who knew.
What the fuck is wrong with 2018?
In some regions this will be a difference of 25°C in just a few days. Can't this just be over already, it's been going on since april. I can't remember the last time my well-being was affected this much by the weather.
There was a recent high-profile case where a Chechen official took a 17 year old as a second wife and basically nothing came out of it, aside from some outrage in liberal media.

So, if you're Muslim, you'll probably be fine. Just make sure you have connections with local Muslims.
you make it sound as if I personally take some EU funds. And you have a really condescending attitude. "You take our money, we helped you, so you must listen as we tell you". From my perspective (I am Czech), it was Germany and Russia who fucked my country up 80 years ago. One side Nazis killing slavic people because they were untermenschen, on the other side fucking USSR. If it were not for these two countries, communism would not have decimated eastern Europe. You need some history lessons

and nowadays we see history repeating itself. Gemany is no more nazistic and imperialistic, but it is spineless and enabling another fascist Regime, which is current Russia. Russia is again threatening other countries
T_D fellows can't use Google Maps? Or weather.com?

Those 2 locations are an hour by car from each other. Weather was literally the same according to weather.com. And you have the audacity to talk about facts.:D
Well given everything you cite is actually borrowed material from the north-european folklore (this mostly), it's hard to call racism on Tolkien frankly.
Also, he despised the Nazis, that tried to capitalise on his german ancestry : http://www.openculture.com/2014/04/j-r-r-tolkien-snubs-a-german-publisher.html
At least the Blender Foundation block is an unrelated issue. They refused to turn on monetization & ads on the channel since it is non-profit. Youtube has not given a proper response.

There is Novoslovinskij jazyk, artificial language intended to be used by Slavs. Everyone can understand it in theory. http://groups.google.com/group/novoslovienskij and https://sites.google.com/site/novoslovienskij/demonstracia-grammatiky-ns-jazyka
I wonder how much fear or lack of trust to pollsters influence self selection of Russians willing to answer on political questions. There is no way to guess what opinions they have but from 10% up to 50% of Russians refuse to participate in polls depending on topic. I failed to find proper numbers to compare how often people refuse on different topics and in different countries, most numbers are about phone interviews and include people unavailable or thinking a pollster is a salesman (which must not be a problem with in person polling), while most polls done by WTSIOM or Levada are done in person either at respondents' apartments or using van based polling stations.
Forced to fight, maybe. Forced to kill civilians in cold blood? No. No German soldier was punished for refusing. Very few even expressed qualms about it.

Damned by their own words.
Well coming from the president who blatantly protected Apple from a court decision made in favor of its Korean direct competitor Samsung I'm not sure he should be so quick to accuse Europe of protectionism ...
> Why is it they only ever seem to hit women and children and medics and journalists?
Because all reports come from Hamas, and Hamas has to gain more from making the loss of life of women and children public. Hamas doesn't dress itself as active combatants while they're operating, making it really difficult to differentiate combatant from civilian. Especially since female suicide bombers have been used by Hamas before (yes it is an old article but it is one of the most prominent ones, she was the eighth female suicide bomber since 2002), with the one I mentioned even having wanted that since the age of 13.
About medics and journalists, not sure.
But for example a while back Hamas first released that 62 innocent people were killed during a day of protest, people immediately jumped on the hate Israel train for killing that many civilians, then Hamas later on released a statement claiming 50 of those 62 as Hamas members, no-one was outraged that Hamas lied so blatantly. Still 12 of them were innocent, but having an 80.6% success ratio on hitting enemy combatants is still far higher of a civilian to combatant ratio than Hamas will ever achieve with their rocket strikes on civilian residential zones.

Point is that France has already been forcing it's way and is unlikely to be able to push for more and that they're running border control for themselves just as much as they are for the UK. Put that aside, it's a French problem first and foremost and they should be handling it more than anyone else. They expect Italy/Spain/Greece/Morocco to do the same with their migrant crisis and they should be held to the same standard.
