In what way do you want this other player to be better? Video quality? Power efficiency? Simpler/advanced options? Ease of use?
Personally my favorite video player is MPC-BE You can get it here http://sourceforge.net/projects/mpcbe/ I use that with Madvr video renderer
The most obvious choice would be to go for either MPC-HC or MPC-BE. MPC-BE is a fork of MPC-HC with some additional features and bug fixes, but both are considered to be pretty great and superior to VLC (they use much less RAM too).
Otherwise you have PotPlayer which I've not tested out myself, but some users swear to it.
I personally prefer MPC-HC over other media players due to it being quick, fairly simple to use and light on system resources. Plus, it plays all file formats that I can throw at it.
I'll admit that MPC-HC might not be much of a looker (since it inherits the UI from its now discontinued parent, MPC). But with MPC being open source, there's a variant of it out there called MPC-BE which is easier on the eyes (picture).
Its another fork of MPC. I tried both HC and BE and I found I liked BE more. Might be personal preference, but I found BE to perform better and I like its options. Link
MPC-BE is kind of all in a single package like VLC with a nice skin thrown on it and some improvements (such as a seek hover thumbnail like on YouTube), and that's what I use. But maybe it's actually very shady and I shouldn't. Works for me though.
It's also the only way besides Windows Media Player (of all things) to make my trusty Asus 1201N play HD at 60 FPS without stuttering. Fan sounds like it's about to take off and start flying but that's some efficient hardware decoding going on that no other player seems to be able to do.
I use Media Player Classic - Black Edition I went through an 'alternatives to VLC' thread, and this was recommended in particular for its audio quality when its set up to use the MPC-BE audio renderer.
Side by side there was a subtle but discernible difference between it and VLC, the sound just had a lot better sense of space to it imo. Try it compared to your usual anyway, I love it now.
If you have a spare few hours its worth configuring to use as your video player too, there's some crazy awesome upscaling options when you use it with madvr. Here is a wiki guide I used as a start.
Just saw OP uses Mac-could always dual-boot if nothing on there appeals?
>Media Player Classic
http://sourceforge.net/projects/mpcbe/ It's a video player.
>Matroska Video Container
http://www.matroska.org/ Think of it as a way to store multiple audio, video, and text streams in one file. Similar to an MP4.
>Bluray
http://www.blu-ray.com/ Pretty much the best physical home release media format ever.
>AV network reciever
This is a type of device that takes media from one storage location, deencode or transcodes it, and sends it to a display and speakers.
I'd like to recommend a lightweight, free and open-source media player by the name of MPC-HC which plays alomost every media format under the sun. It may look a lot less fancy than other media players because MPC-HC prioritises functionality over form.
Though if you'd like something that is a bit more aesthetically pleasing, there's MPC-BE which is a fork of MPC-HC.
I'd suggest that you stay away from codec packs though, to save yourself from possible troubles that may crop up in the future.
Cheers.
Well that doesn't sound right. What is the extension of this file you're trying to play? and how big is it?
I use MPC-BE because VLC is ugly. Doesn't need any codec packs. http://sourceforge.net/projects/mpcbe/
