MX Player kept saying "Unsupported Android Version" and quitting.
A bit of search online, and I found a beta build which seems to work fine: https://sites.google.com/site/mxvpen/translation/test-build
The Pro version doesn't work. Apparently it's crashing on the license check, so for now I'll stick with the AD version which seems to work fine.
Yes. The Terms of Service/Privacy Policy applies to both Paid/Free Version of MX Player or any product made by the Developer.
Yeah MX Player never works after a major update. They have the app hard-coded to support the Android versions they choose.
Here's a link to the Beta version which is supposed to include support for the M preview.
Maybe that's the reason it was changed to only work with MX Player then. If it requires headers to be put in the http request for the video to play at all, then it cannot work with a generic Intent as before as there is no standard way to pass headers. Unless using MX Player which supports a custom "headers" extra in its API: https://sites.google.com/site/mxvpen/api
Too bad they are not sending a generic VIEW intent with the "headers" extra to let other app eventually handle it. I supposed they do not want to be bombarded with "it doesn't work with external player XXX" angry feedback...
I am not a dev so don't take my word, but I think you can launch apps and files by using "intents" through shell. I just tested it out with a few apps and it worked, have not tried launching movies with MX Player but it does have an API as well https://sites.google.com/site/mxvpen/api
Unless something's changed, the most recent version of Aptoide works perfectly fine for me; and I have never rooted my FireTV. I have the most recent FireTV OS version, and checked both options in Settings -> Developer Options; enable-debugging and unknown-sources. I used adbFire 1.09 on Windows to sideload aptoide5.2.0.2.apk and then added three popular stores: milaupv, mark8, and htcsense. I tested Aptoide just today by installing ES File Manager, and it installed and ran perfectly fine. It's worth pointing out that many paid apps (Mx Player Pro, etc) likely won't run properly on the Fire TV without rooting and installing certain google services; for example, I could only get the free ad-supported version of MX Player 1.7.31 (NEON) to work from https://sites.google.com/site/mxvpen - but none of the legal or pirated apk's of the pro version seemed to work at all. Since the free versions are the ones that tend to work, I'd recommend using this site to download an apk directly from Google (safer, less likely to have malware) and side load it with something like adbFire: http://apps.evozi.com
I haven't tried VLC on my HDX 7", but I've used MXPlayer on my android phones for a while and sideloaded MXPlayer on my HDX and it works perfectly for everything I've thrown at it.
You can download the APK file from the site directly, not need to get it from the Play marketplace. https://sites.google.com/site/mxvpen/download
Just get the regular free version, don't think I needed to download a codec, but it should tell you if you need one on your first run. Like njd said, get Estrongs File Explorer from the Amazon marketplace and then you will have to allow your Kindle to install from unknown sources and then you can use Estrongs to install the APK after downloading it.
It works so well on every phone/tablet I've tried it on it's totally worth the 6 bucks for the paid version with no ads, but unfortunately you can't use anything but the free version on the Kindle since you won't have the necessary Google services to validate the paid version.
SF would use only CPU while HW or HW+ will use media chipset as well. Elaborated more on FAQ > Playing section:

Press DISPLAY button on TV remote to know playback info on Sony TV.
The Devs say no https://sites.google.com/site/mxvpen/faq#TOC-Is-there-any-seasonal-discount-of-MX-Player-Pro- Apart from the Sale a few weeks back (awesome Deal btw.) I have never seen it on sale. And I don't know if the Deal a few weeks back was Google's doing or signed by the Devs, I don't know how those deal of the weeks things are handled.

Try this native app, It has worked well for me. The bad reviews appear to be people who don't understand what the app is. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01LKUVNAY/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1476527248&sr=8-1&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=IPTV+app&dpPl=1&dpID=41PhuHbWGfL&ref=plSrch
But sideload mx player first https://sites.google.com/site/mxvpen/download
Profile Autoplay Video in Clipboard:
Variable Value, %CLIP ~ .site1.com/.site2.com/.site3.com Play Video
Play Video Task
Send Intent, Action->android.intent.action.VIEW Data->%CLIP Package->com.mxtech.videoplayer.pro (use .ad for free version)
Then in chrome, for example, long press the video link, and copy link. Your video will automatically start playing so long as it is in the match list in the profile.

This is great - thanks for mentioning it. I'm able to navigate the app, the highlight is dim but still viewable, and I can select a movie for playback using the Fire TV Remote (unlike Showbox, which entirely requires a Bluetooth game controller.)
As you mention, the built-in player doesn't let me access any transport controls (play/pause, rew/ff,) though. The game controller does.
I am able to use the Fire TV remote if I choose the "custom" playback option, using Kodi (Android/ARM version, from here) or MX Player 1.7.37 (NEON) (from here.)
Thanks again, I appreciate it!
