I ordered with 1 day shipping, which originally said Nov 4th delivery. I got the same email (as did my friend who ordered one), so I called Amazon. The CSR was very nice and looked up the information and said this was just a general update on the product, and that they were still getting them out on the 3rd, delivery on the 4th. I hope she is right. Maybe someone else could call and confirm that what I was told was right?

I'm in the same situation as you (first tablet), and I agree with all your points. I'm still running stock AOSP.
I was not happy with the memory leak in 5.0, the constant redraws, etc. but with 5.1.1 it seems to be mostly gone.
I also replaced Chrome with Mercury Browser as it seems there's no way for Chrome to keep tabs in memory when you switch between them... it's just ridiculous. Mercury works just fine.
And in fact I'm so happy with it, I purchased this keyboard... I'm so satisfied with it. It integrates perfectly well with the Nexus 9, all shortcuts work seamlessly (CTRL+C - CTRL+V, ALT-TAB to switch between apps, shift + arrows to select text...). I'm surprised at how much of Android can be navigated just using the arrow keys! Miles better than the iPad Air I tested it on this weekend.
I use it a lot for work email, book reading (play books is AWESOME) and watching TV series, as well as web browsing, chatting in Telegram, etc.
I'm really happy with it, and indeed the UI is much, much better than other tablets I've tried (Samsung Galaxy Tabs, iPads, etc.). I keep trying any tablet that falls on my hands (especially at stores, etc.) but I certainly wouldn't swap it for any other right now.
MX Player kept saying "Unsupported Android Version" and quitting.
A bit of search online, and I found a beta build which seems to work fine: https://sites.google.com/site/mxvpen/translation/test-build
The Pro version doesn't work. Apparently it's crashing on the license check, so for now I'll stick with the AD version which seems to work fine.
Hmmm, I see what you mean. From what I know, I have to do the same thing as you to use cloud storage; download from website then go from downloads folder to Google Drive.
I don't know much about IFTT or Tasker, but maybe try posting on those subreddits and somebody might be able to give you a script that will do it. /r/tasker and /r/ifttt
I'll try to dig around the internet, see if there's an easy way to that sort of thing. But you might have some luck at those subreddits compared to what I find (if I manage to find anything).
Edit: A search brought up this application: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ttxapps.drivesync&hl=en Maybe give that a shot.
Have a look at MightyText, or mysms. They both do exactly this.
If your rooted you might test the app "Second Screen" and see if it improves things for you.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.farmerbb.secondscreen.free&hl=en-GB
SecondScreen is an application designed for power users that frequently connect their Android devices to external displays. It works with your existing screen mirroring solution to give you the best experience possible. With SecondScreen, you can change your device's resolution and density to fit your TV or monitor, enable always-on desktop mode in Chrome, and even turn your device's backlight off, among several other features.

I tried safe mode and it worked great all day. So today I opened it up in normal mode (the problem came back) and I deleted apps until the BT stopped turning itself off. It turned out to be AVG Cleaner and Battery Booster. I had that app installed for almost 2 years but only last month did this start happenning. after I uninstalled it my N9 BT is back to normal.
It worked!
I bought TwoMon USB on Google Play (deal at 3.99$, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.devguru.eltwomonusb) and installed the client on MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2015, MacOS Sierra)
Experience: - way faster then Splashtop Wired XDisplay (free version) and other via WiFi - a little bit of lag sometimes on videos and some apps, still very acceptable - frame rate decent - auto-connect works perfect - having a secondary portable monitor is amazing!
I was a big fan of Lecture Notes. It costs a few bucks, but definitely worth it in my opinion. You'll need the main app plus a free add on to import PDFs. The developers were very responsive whenever I ran into any issues, and the app is super customisable. There's also a trial edition, so you can mess around before paying for it.
Do you charge it in sunlight, or while you are using it so it gets super hot? I've ballooned a few batteries on phones over the years doing this, and I use GSAM so I get a warning if my device overheats. Saves my current phone routinely when I'm charging, running GPS and streaming music as I drive and forget I should turn on the AC in my car to keep it cool.
Try Agent https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tryagent or Trigger https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jwsoft.nfcactionlauncher
Agent is easier to use, just tell it which calendars. Lots of other settings also, like days of the week and time ranges (so it doesn't mute your tablet when you actually want it need to hear it).
Trigger requires a lot more steps to get to the solution, but it can do more.
I'd probably get the simple cover and a separate mobile Bluetooth keyboard. After searching Amazon for about a minute I found this:
iWerkz Universal Foldable Bluetooth Keyboard, Black/White (44652BW)
Take my advice with a pinch of salt but Dirty Unicorn is excellent. The salt part comes in when Android N got released and I switched to stock because I wanted to try it out. It's not very good and made it laggy but I don't use it enough/too lazy to switch it back (I have a laptop and Desktop too).
hmm, i think i missed a link. Here are some others to help you:
TWRP for the N9: https://twrp.me/htc/htcnexus9.html
LOS for Flounder/Nexus9: https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/flounder/ (FYI you'll need to be flashing an UNofficial build, as the N9 is not officially maintained)
You can follow the instructions here to install TWRP.
After typing the reboot command, hold volume down and power key to enter HBOOT, then select RECOVERY to boot TWRP. In TWRP, go to Wipe -> Format Data, this will remove the encryption on data partition. Then go to Advanced Wipe and wipe all partitions (I suggest wiping all data when flashing a new rom).
After wiping data, connect your device to a computer, copy rom and gapps package to internal storage. In TWRP, select Install, install rom then gapps and reboot device. Now you've done installing a custom rom on your device.
To unlock your tablet, after entering fastboot mode, connect the device to a computer (with proper driver and Android SDK Platform tools installed), open Command Prompt and enter fastboot oem unlock
to unlock. NOTE: This will wipe all your data on the device.
ps. I'm using LineageOS 14.1, it runs great on Nexus 9, you may give it a try.
SUPCASE. I own this one and it's super rugged. I removed the screen protector and got a glass one instead. It's awesome:
https://www.amazon.com/SUPCASE-Full-body-Protection-Unicorn-Protector/dp/B00ONRSSF0
It's not a folio, but I have the microsoft bluetooth foldable keyboard and it's awesome. Very thin and small form factor, easy to carry around with your tablet.
https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Universal-Foldable-Keyboard-Android/dp/B00UBGU4PY
On the subject of smart covers, I have a Roocase Origami that's awesome. It looks like they're clearing stock though, so grab one if you want one soon.
I've had the Roocase Origami since I got it okay Christmas and aside from the color representation being off, it's perfect (it's purple instead of lilac, but not a huge deal). It stands up in portrait and landscape, which works well for me. Some of the reviews say it increases light bleed. I only have a tiny bit at the bottom left corner to begin with, and don't notice a difference whether the case is on or off.
I have only used Skinomi's screen protect for Nexus 9: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NAGSG9I
I don't know if I would say I recommend it. It works well but installation wasn't the easiest thing in the world. But then again from my research that seems to be the case for most, if not all screen protectors for Nexus 9. I generally use Zagg's InvisibleShield screen protectors because they are easy to install, or at the very least I can bring my device and pay $5-10 for a pro to do it for me within minutes. But unfortunately they didn't make one for Nexus 9.
Mine doesn't have the noticeably hollow back, but even if it did, I wouldn't notice due to the case I use.
Speaking of which, you can't go wrong with this case. I love it.
I use a usb drive and one of these Usb to mini usb adapters to watch movies
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00585CLSQ I've used it for the nexus 7, in portrait orientation. It should fit the 9 just fine as well, though you may need to swap to landscape to do so. It comes with two sets of arms, four long and four short, the arm is bendy enough to move when you want it to but stable enough to not be a problem. Have not tested with the 9, but I think it should fit portrait with the long arms, and would definitely fit landscape with the short.
I bought the Roocase Origami in December and I love it. It has a magic cover style that you can use in both portrait and landscape and has a case that covers the sides and back as well. The only flaws are that the colors are darker than pictured (I ordered the "Orchid" cold and it's a dark purple), and the matte coating/color on the corners rubs off to white after awhile. (A few reviews state that the case increases light bleed; I have not found this to be true, personally. I only have a tiny bit in the lower left corner that I don't notice unless I look for it, and don't notice it worsening in the case.)
I am using a sleeve by ceocase... It fits a little snug but I am very happy with it as I don't really need my tablet to be upright.. It looks great.. Keeps the profile of the tablet very thin.. And is made from good enough materials.. Here is a link to it.. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OL6H8AO/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_xf-wvb1JDS9MF
I am liking this case It keeps the device nice and thing. The propping mechanize works very well. It uses the magnets in the device so when you close / open the case the screen automatic turns on and off.
I can't tell you how well it will hold up I have only had it for about two months.
I've got this :
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E4RWLDY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
which is pretty good. nice oleophobic coating, feels almost as good as the naked screen, and the cutouts are pretty well placed. it doesn't fit quite as well (the overall size isn't quite as accurate) as ones i've used on my N5, but i'm rather happy with it, especially for the price, and considering its a much larger piece of glass
edit: sorry didn't realize how long that took me to answer :/
That's about the same way that mine is, except my light bleed is slightly less. Hopefully you'll enjoy it as much as I enjoy mine! (BTW, the indigo Moko Ultra Slim Smart Case is absolutely beautiful with it: http://www.amazon.com/Google-Nexus-Case-Lightweight-Smart-shell/dp/B00J2QUWTW)
Nexus 9 Case, SUPCASE Google Nexus 9 Case Heavy Duty Full-body Protection [Unicorn Beetle PRO] Case Cover with Built-in Screen Protector for HTC Nexus 9 (2014 Release), Black/Black
The Roocase Origami case is only $30. It seems pretty sturdy and hasn't created any problems for me.
If you're looking for a keyboard and you don't want to pay for the folio cover, this is a cheaper option. http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Bluetooth-Multi-Device-Smartphones-920-006342/dp/B00MUTWLW4/ref=sr_1_58?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1420863184&sr=1-58
I like that it has the slot to prop up the tablet, and you can use it with 2 other Bluetooth devices. I have a Nexus6, and it's cool to use this keyboard with the phone as well as with my tablet.
I hate cases so I got a sleeve from amazon for only $20 with expedited shipping.
Just wanted to update: Amazon brought its $50 cut back. I'm purchasing mine now while I can. I'm also a PhD student looking to do the same things with mine (reading and note taking)... let me know if you end up finding an annotation application/method that works best for you.
I have this one. Similar and available in the states. I really like it.
I need it for running Garmin Pilot primarily. Everything else I use it for is extra, mostly time wasting. The 8" screen would be a good size. I'm on Project Fi for now, and it's saving me a ton of money at about $30/mo for 2 devices, but I'm on Wifi most of the time. I need access to LTE, but I don't use much data... for the time being.
Anyone else have this problem? I have been using my tablet daily for over a year now. It's as old as they get, I preordered this tablet the first day it was pre-orderable.
I factory reset the tablet 2 days ago becuase I couldn't stand the problem anymore, but that didn't solve the problem. It can go a few hours working perfectly sometimes working and then it will just have a spasm of turning itself off while I'm in the middle of using it. I use it every day to play music at my cafe. At least I used to. It never turns itself on.
When it doesn't turn off it works perfectly. So I don't think it's hardware. Has anyone else had this problem? Can third party signals remotely turn off the N9 bluetooth? This is getting ridiculous.
I looked for an app that locks the BT on. But apparently that doens't exist. At least I couldn't find it.
[update: It was the app AVG Cleaner and Battery Booster. BT worked in safe mode so I deleted apps until it worked in normal mode.]
Kodi and Instagram throw app native library errors on startup but seem to work without any problem.
SystemPanel only displays itself in the running apps list.
Edit: The best thing about this version of Android is the app optimization after an update goes by so much faster than before.
Edit 2: Soundcloud does the same as Kodi/Instagram
Sorry for the late response. The clock is an app/widget called Chronus. The wallpaper I happened to find online a while back (can't remember where). I can send it to you if you like.
I gave this version ElementalX-N9-4.01.zip a try and didn't get the warning! Didn't have to format data!
See the xda thread of the updated info: - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63191280&postcount=1030
Is the EX Kernel Manager app worth the download and what are the IAP's in the app for?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=flar2.exkernelmanager
If you're rooted you can use Titanium Backup.
If not, you can try Helium, I'm not sure it would cover your use case but it seems like the best option.
I use Action Launcher 3, which has the ability to change the color of the search bar.
For the music I use the stock Google Play Music widget and Jacks Music widget. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jackthakar.musicwidget&hl=no
Not sure what you mean by "wirelessly sync"?
If you have an Android phone and the Google+ backup is enabled, all your pictures are already showing up in the Photos app in your Nexus 9 as you can see.
Other than that, you already synced everything up when you entered your Google account in the setup phase. Your Google account and services are always synced across all your Android devices.
If you mean accessing the filesystem in your tablet from your PC, you can do that as well through WiFi or using the USB cable. For Wi-Fi almost every file manager will have the option, but you'll probably enjoy something like AirDroid.
There's an app that I've used to get it working
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dancingpixelstudios.sixaxiscontroller
I've never really used it for anything more than remote play so YMMV
You have to be rooted in order to work but theoretically it should work with any android device. There's a compatibility checker you can download and it'll let you know if it'll work before you take the plunge
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dancingpixelstudios.sixaxiscompatibilitychecker
Test it out before buying
Have you run any diagnostics or hardware scans? Try using Elixir 2 (or another app that can detect hardware) to scan the available hardware. It may be that the camera has become disconnected from the mainboard.
What makes me suspect that the hardware has become disconnected: The Nexus 9's camera is wedged pretty tightly into the rear plastic housing. In the iFixit teardown, the technician pulled off the camera by accident. Reconnecting the camera would require removing the mainboard which is a lot of work. Whoever sold it to you might have done their own teardown.
> You can also use Adobe Acrobat Reader for PDFs if you want.
Acrobat isn't available for Android, but Adobe Reader is.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.adobe.reader
I just use Google Drive myself.
