What's the legal situation for video game clones in general?
Like, could the Tetris company legally try to take down NullpoMino, a blatant Tetris clone? (It'd be utterly pointless, considering it hasn't been updated in forever and no doubt all over the Internet, but hey.)
In case anybody is wondering, the Tetris version being played here is "Nullpomino", which can be downloaded for free. Most of these 40 line records are done on the keyboard.
I also hope to never run into one of these guys in facebook Tetris
Tetris is the most stupid satisfying and euphoria inducing game in the world. When you finally get 40 lines in under a minute... under 50 seconds... 40 seconds!!! Oh my god, the rush! The first time you play invisible mode? Holy shit I can't comprehend this oh my god what's going on I have to do this again so I can get better!
Oh god, the amount of time I spent on TGM and the Tetrisconcept community when I was younger... I need to get back into this. The busy life of an adult prevented me from playing more.
NullpoMino is a good place to start if you ever want to start playing Tetris a little more than casually.
I definitely wouldn't call Tetris Friends anywhere near close, at a high level - can't buffer DAS during ARE, rotation system is different, the lock delay is enormous (though thankfully not Tetris DS-tier), no sonic drop, and most importantly, the scoring system is just fuck
My advice: play Nullpomino, Grade Mania 3 mode, Classic3 ruleset. It's a 1:1 conversion, right down to the grading system
I will answer both questions with one answer!
I would pretty much only do online arena there. For offline play, (I would practice my Sprint time a lot) I used Nullpomino, which has a lot of cool customization options.
Like /u/ZachBeeHD said, work towards getting better. This could be by working towards a better score in marathon, or you could check out other game modes if that interests you. Here's a list of possible things you could do:
Edit: Just wanted to add, great job on clearing Marathon!
Edit2: Added T-Spin disclaimer for Marathon scoring
Emulation-wise, TGM1 and TGM2 are emulated in MAME, and there's a version of TGM3 floating around the torrentsphere that's been hacked to run on ordinary PC hardware (the Taito Type X hardware that it runs on in the arcades is basically a PC).
If you're not a filthy pirate, the best fanmade clone out there is currently Nullpomino. It's got modes that recreate pretty much every version of Tetris out there (and a few other puzzle games). Specifically, for TGM, you're going to want to play the "Grade Mania" and "Speed Mania" modes with the "Classic" rulesets. More info here.
After seeing this, maybe you're thinking, "even if I don't think I'll ever be that good, Tetris looks like fun! Where can I start if I'm in the West?"
Here's a big Tetris community website: http://harddrop.com/
/r/tetris as well.
And (imo) the best and most respected Tetris clone for playing, Nullpomino: https://code.google.com/p/nullpomino/
Have fun!
I don't think you can emulate the game he's playing which is the third game in the series. You can however download nullpomino and play the Grademania modes which are pretty much the modes from the TGM games.
Everything from here is fine: https://code.google.com/p/nullpomino/
From the doc:
[Starting a server] You can run a server by simply double-clicking "netserver.bat" if you are using Windows. But the port number is fixed to 9200, which is a default one. If you want to change the port number you can use the following command: For Windows: netserver.bat [PORT NUMBER] For Linux/MacOS: ./netserver [PORT NUMBER] Optionally, there is a second argument to pass in the path of the server configuration file.
MAME supports TGM 1 and 2, but not TGM3 as far as I know. You might be able to configure NullpoMino to give a similar experience too, though I've never bothered doing so myself.
And yet fanprojects such as Nullpomino do it better. It's almost like caring about your product rather than just the potential money it could make creates better results.
Yeah, I know. It was insane to watch, and the way they changed the timer during the run was pretty funny, too. I ended up downloading NullpoMino because of it.
Yes, the game is called NullpoMino. You can change playfield dimensions with Ruleeditor.bat. However, I had to change some lines in the code to make playing on such a big playfield possible (also having 9 colors for Rainbow Dash). Downloads:
