I've done just this. I built a dual Xeon workstation for 3D, VR, and editing work. The thing that made me realise I was mad to wait was the fact that the Mac Pro graphics cards are user replaceable. Apple just never released updated cards to fit the 2013 Mac Pro.
Check out One Commander as a Finder-like Explorer replacement - Column views! Colour tagging! Space bar to quick-look!
This YouTube video from a Mac and PC using developer and artist nails the current state of affairs.
i am a back-switcher as well (in the creative industry)
cant say anthing about your workflow, but what i missed most witch switching back was the Finder... Windows Explorer is just shit in comarison (space bar preview, column view ect.). Until i found something similar (even better) for PC: One Commander (i just LOVE the color indicators for file age.. never use complex versioning again to find your latest files.. you can even theme it and i made a theme to emulate OSX Finders look and feel: http://imgur.com/4N8c0cb )
Microsofts Support is just stellar. I got my SB replaced twice without any hassle within days (as someone mentioned you have two options: send in your broken machine and wait for the replacement, or get a replacement up front and send in your broken machine once you have your new one and migrated all data. microsoft does not repair your SB, you just get a replacement machine). as for the hardware reliability: my first replacement was due to a early windows bug that caused the machine to wake from sleep mode and if stored in a tight sleeve and backpack it could run extremely hot and ruin the battery, so i dont really count that as a hardware failure even tho it was affected. my second book had a stuck volume rocker, also no big deal but annoying and it was also replaced promptly. i am overall very happy with my SB, it really is a solid laptop (i have maxed specs) and its a blast to be able to play some of your Steam games on it (which was always a pain on osx): Civ 5 in Touch mode with the Clipboard (the "Tablet) switched sides is pure AWESOMENESS -> http://i.imgur.com/KyVg4h8.jpg cant wait for the Civ 6 touch support patch.
dunno anything about return policies, but given that microsoft is extremely helpful i cannot imagine this to be a big deal.
For a paid piece of software I'd say Synergy, especially for people who mainly use a pc and have a laptop for some mild work now and then.
In the second place on my list, I'd have to pick Serviio. It's a neat little program that lets you stream videos, music and images from your pc to your smart TV. There are other options like the one from samsung for example but I just find Serviio to be the most functional out of them. If you don't have something like a chromecast and have a smart TV laying around, I'd really recommend you try it out. It's free for 14 days I believe.
EDIT: And as an added bonus, a free file manager called One Commander v2 for Windows. Has e nice look, closer to the new windows look and what do you know, it manages files pretty well.
Hi MercuryBolt, I am a A5 user, so I am not sure if this would help, but I use Commander One file manager to transfer files between my computer and Supernote A5. I know your OS is Android, and my A5 is Linux, but Commander One works like a charm and much easier to transfer files between my computer and Supernote devise. Maybe it can work for you? here is the link to Window version of Commander one: http://onecommander.com/
Don't know of any plugins/extensions for Windows Explorer that do this. There are alternative file browsers available. Apparently, One Commander has a mode similar to the column view known from Finder. Haven't used the program myself though.
The other option is to just accept Windows Explorer. The column view is, after all, just a different way of displaying the same information that a traditional tree view also shows.
Make sure, you have the "Navigation Pane" enabled: Windows Explorer > View > Navigation Pane I also like to have the option "Expand to open folder" enabled. It makes the Navigation Pane follow along to the folder opened in the main pane.
Together, these two options give me the same functionality that the column view in Finder offered:
In addition to that, you can expand as many folders in the navigation pane as you want. Something the column view can't do.
One Commander v1 file manager has video and GIF playback in thumbnail http://onecommander.com/download-v1.html but you need to press small play button in the thumbnail. In one of the versions it would automatically play, but it takes as much ram and CPU as playing all those videos in media player at the same time, so it was removed. "Sampling the video" would not work as searching through frames is much more CPU/IO intensitive operation than playback. Disclaimer: I am developer of this program. I have removed that feature in V2
There are alternate file managers you can install, like these.
I haven't used the above ones, but I can tell you that One Commander is pretty good.
> Any opinions, suggestions or first hand experience to share?
I use xplorer² (a classic Explorer replacement) and SpeedCommander (a Norton Commander clone). XYplorer is annoying to use in my personal opinion.
While both applications seem pricey, the developers (both seem to be a one-man company) are very responsive and try their best to solve upcoming issues. Directory Opus seems to be able to do just anything, but it has always been too much for me. (And it is almost twice as expensive IIRC.)
If you prefer weird user interfaces, you might also want to give the One Commander a ride.
The only one I know is the OneCommander (initially bitCommander). I guess the main problem is that "Miller Columns" are of NeXTStep heritage, so "naturally" tightly bound to OS X and WindowMaker.
edit: I saw that you already know this one. Doesn't it have a single-window mode? - It is still in the development phase and things change quickly. You might want to consider just suggesting this feature.
For me Total Commander is the best (functionality and customization). Don't let the website or UI put you off :) There are also free, but very capable alternatives, like FreeCommander.
Also, take One commander on a test drive.

But coming from a mac you might like One commander.
