Maybe a Finder alternative like Pathfinder may be able to do this.
A quick google gave me this list of alternate file browsers.
I’m not sure if this is what you’re thinking of but it was the first thing which came to mind: Pathfinder. If you can’t find an app to fill your need you can definitely do this as an Automator workflow, maybe not 100% what you’re looking for but it would save you having to do it manually in the future.
I used to swear by Path Finder, but a few releases back I experienced some issues with lock-ups and haven’t used it since. Might be worth installing the trial to see how it works for you, because when it worked well it was an absolute must-have in the toolbox.
Well I did some more digging and found an application that is M1 capable for Big Sure called "Path Finder" its a complete replacement for Finder and has a trial it has the CUT / Paste command built into the Gui and has alot more features from what I see. Going to give it a whirl and see if its worth purchasing

> prores doesn't play in VLC which is my preferred player.
Oh?. It play ProRes just fine, it's the inability to play multiple discrete tracks simultaneously that's the kicker.
>DNXHD is very popular, although it takes some getting used to because there are way too many formats.
I guess it's my turn to be the one to point out that DNxHR works pretty much like ProRes does at this point. Just choose HQX (422 HQ), HQ (8-bit 422HQ), SQ(422), or LB (Proxy) and be done with it.
>I'm a huge nerd who gets off (sexually?) on building his own computer.
I see you've made the blood sacrifice with the sacred I/O shield.
>OSX is a superior UI and I miss the ease with which I move files around every day.
Unf. Whenever I have to do heavy duty file management on my NAS I break out the old MBP and get to it. Explorer is OK, but it just lacks too many convenience features.
You wanna have some real fun with file management, though? Try Path Finder. It's like Finder with a cybernetic exoskeleton.
(Cocoatech’s Path Finder)[https://cocoatech.com/] is much faster to read folder content than any other complex finder like product (Finder, Forklift, QSpace). If you want even for reactivity, try Marta
Hey you know what, you actually can't do this with finder. I've tried for 15 mins and can't find a way.
https://cocoatech.com/#/ Try "PathFinder", it's a third party utility that has much richer filtering. Personally I just use command-line `find` but you don't like that option so here's a better GUI.

> Ease of use plus a lot of devices around (that was a school Mac).
And that's the reason why AirDrop exists. You don't need to plug anything and you don't even need to join devices into the same WiFi station. AirDrop works via WiFi peer-to-peer that DOES NOT NEED a WiFi station. It doesn't even need IP. Just turn on WiFi and Bluetooth and you can send file to ANY device around.
> lacking one of the most basic functions of a modern file explorer
It's personal preference so I'm not commenting on it. If "file explorer" by your definition is a window with have multiple columns for displaying file hierarchy, file list of current working directory, and file preview, get Pathfinder (https://cocoatech.com/). I myself can never understand why any people with sanity can work in that pesky layout that wastes two/third of screen space.
> Besides... Does AirDrop have the progress indicator?
Yes there is a Pie Chart progress indicator on the sender side, and notifications on the receiver side when a file is received.
My brain protests while I work and I find myself opening facebook before I realize I did. I use blocksite which is a free chrome extension and it does not let me open facebook. I can not believe my brain is so lazy. I also use Path Finder when I in my computer and not in a web browser. I often use it to free up space with the sizebrowser instead of trying to figure out what is slowing my computer down by randomly closing things and deleting things.
Agreeing with scienceselfhelp, I dig f.lux and get annoyed when I look at a regular screen late at night. Trello is useful but only if my team knows how to use it. I work with a ton of different clients and if they do not use it right for project management, it is useless. I use Adobe a ton to create content and review/ edit designs and use Path Finder to organize my computer. I got it in Setapp because I needed Clean My Mac and ended up buying Path Finder becasue I looooooove it!
Path Finder by Cocoatech. It is an oldie but goodie. I still work with a ton of files on my mac becasue I am in marketing and do a lot of content in Adobe. I can organize files easier and cut back on distractions by having only what I want open. I love going hours without looking at my web browser becasue I find myself opening facebook for absolutely no reason other than my brain is protesting work. I use canva as well but once i have downloaded the files I can sort the approved copies and dump the rest by going into the size browser function.
Actually yes, Path Finder. https://cocoatech.com/#/ No report per sea but you can use Size browser to find & delete any files that you forgot you had that are wasting space. You can see everything in a clear list before the install and then see everything afterward very clearly grouped. Ther are a ton fo features but that is what I use it most for.
This is why I use Pathfinder (https://cocoatech.com/#/). It's a bit too busy these days (but you can turn off all that business) but it fixes pretty much all of the problems with Finder. And there are many. To your question - why isn't merge an option???
The Finder is technically just a regular application, which is presumably why it gets a dot in the Dock like any other application.
That said there are some unusual things about the Finder:
There are also some Finder replacements like Pathfinder that can be configured to run without the Finder.
I would assume that it is the WindowServer process (see Activity Monitor) that draws the Desktop Picture - as this is the process that manages windows and various drawing buffers used by apps.
> It's a clone of window's explorer?!
He's just pity it's not a clone of Finder, a POS application that can't even write to FTP mounts and lacks so many other features, there's a thriving market under macOS for alternatives such as Path Finder.
I hear you.
It has improved since the single-threaded Finder, though.
Ever used Path Finder? https://cocoatech.com
Loved it in the early days of OS X, a little too pro for the average user back then, don't know how it has evolved...
Yeahhh! Those hangs are insane. That's what also driving me nuts. I think it's just APFS that's not optimized yet. .3 is in beta right now (I think Beta 2?) and it should get better by .3 and .4 and .6 should be rock solid. I'm losing my hair too I move a lot of files around. I have Finder hang on me all the time via beachball and if I force quit finder doesn't relaunch. I have to go into Terminal and relaunch it and worse restart all together.
Also I get automatically logged out all the time, which is a common issue in Sierra and High Sierra. Definitely GPU related.
In the mean time have you tried Path Finder? It's really excellent. Editors I know use it all the time.
