Not Pray, as in "hope for a safe return".
Prey, as in "it's being hunted".
Once activated it automatically uploads pictures and geolocation data (video upon manual request) to a remote server on a timer.
If the device is destroyed any data uploaded is still accessible through the website.
> I saw it, clear as day. Never doubted that the government could be spying on me ever since.
That's not some crazy backdoor hacking shit. The school system installed remotely accessible security software on their computers.
For the future: Prey Project and Find My Mac. Also, you guys don't backup anything in Dropbox?
EDIT: any ETA on that LA makeup show, by the way?
Sorry dude I really hope you find it. I know this must really suck losing what you feel is your entire life on your laptop. When you get your next laptop install prey project its a free lojack system for laptops.

Prey. You sign up at preyproject.com, install a small program on your computer that runs in the background, and if your computer gets stolen, you can track it, lock it, sound an alarm, that sort of thing. If your computer gets recovered, you can prove that it's yours because Prey logs the serial numbers automatically. You can have up to three devices on a free account, I've got it for my laptop and my phone.
This is after the fact, but installing Prey would be helpful in aiding another event like this. If you set up a guest account, the thief can unwittingly enable Prey to gather WiFi location data and even webcam shots.
Too bad you couldn't use it at this stage of the theft :(
EDIT: www.preyproject.com, not www.prey.com
Right, you should have seen the look on my hoity-toity aunts face when she heard I bought a house in Muskegon Heights. Our road just got repaved, the house is in pretty good shape, just basically needed the bathroom redone and the neighbors were relax and nice as any i've ever met. 12k I am really happy. I did have someone come into my house while I was taking a nap last week when I left the door unlocked. They stole my macbook, but thanks to Prey I got it back from a dude who claims he bought it from 'some black dude' for $50. Man yesterday was a crazy eventful day tracking it down.
I know this doesn't help you now, but in the future you should install Prey on all your portable devices. It has many awesome features for tracking a stolen device and finding the thief. Even without GPS enabled, as long as the computer connects to the internet, it will be able to track the location to within half a block.
The laptop is small enough to keep in a backpack or briefcase, the user will be instructed to keep it with him at all times. Will that actually happen? Eh I dunno.
I'll look into a locking device. Movement alarm is more than we need right now, plus I think it would be more of a hindrance to someone not used to dealing with one. Maybe for future trips.
I'll probably install Prey, thank you for reminding me of that.
Use Prey. Does pretty good. Also, relevant Tumblr for inspiration.
edit: also, you might run into people from the police saying "oh we can't do jack shit about it trololol". Do what the guy behind the Tumblr blog mentioned earlier did and try to make it really popular. Media attention works too. Then, the police will go after it.
For your next laptop: Prey Project
I lost a laptop myself, last summer. I got one bite from my craigslist and newspaper ads, which was some jerk trying to scam me.
As for this one, since you passed the serial along to the police they'll have a tough time pawning it in the state. Thus, it's probably gone. Claim it against your renter's insurance (you DO have renter's coverage, right?) and hold a grudge against your roommate.
