Don't give up yet! Use something like recover my files. The free edition will work just fine. It will piece as many files together as it can.
I work in a PC repair place and and use it at least 5 times a month. Ask me any questions if you have any.
I don't know if this will work since you mentioned you had a Linux installation but try this, I used to use this software to recover files from wiped hard-drives. You may get lucky and recover the stuff.
But programs such as these (http://www.recovermyfiles.com) claim they can recover files even after the hard drive was formatted or windows was re-installed.
The purpose of this is not because i wan't to recover a file i deleted. I'm just wondering if there are programs out there that can detect even a bit from a deleted/overwritten file. (using Data Remanance ofcourse)
If the card is not physically damaged there is a good chance that you NOT being able to access your information is due to corruption. This might be why its missing the drive letter/ask you to format. So try the following:
Once you are able to determine that you're pictures are accessible than you can decide to purchase the software. In any case, don't format your memory card, do not write any data, or use anything else besides recovery software to read it (for the mean time). This program and others will only read from it, and shouldn't be destructive in case you are not successful and need to take it to a pro.
Edit: A question -- Were you able to read your memory card on the computer before this happened?
Or any of the other dozen file recovery programs out there. Plug your drive into a working OS (presumably your friends computer), install the program on the drive that's working, and recover the drive that isn't onto a fresh drive. It's very simple.
Once it's done, use your newly purchased drive as a backup. Please.

You can buy this software or dl the trial version and just recover the data with it and on the images you want to save click the detach icon and full screen and save it with windows snipping tool. It won’t have the best quality that way but you will at least have the images. Honestly it’s worth spending the money on it tbh in case you ever need it in the future.
Easy and simple to use. Can recover any deleted data (not the secure wiped one). Have been using for almost a decade.

If you did not recover the file names and extensions during the recovery process, I am not sure if it is possible to find their names now. Have you tried any recovery software?
I used this software to recover data off a lost drive before and it was worth the money for me. It might work for you.

All related software are pretty much the same and i think you can sort by date, don't you?
I think you could use this to navigate and recover them with your own software
Ok, my best advice would be to use a service like RecoverMyFiles. Granted, it costs some money, but its worth it. In the future, back up your hard drive regularly to a usb external hard drive. It will save a lot of headaches when shit like this happens.
This situation is truly baffling to think that clear instruction was given to literally write down or memorize the 12 words yet was not followed.
Hand-copy the twelve words found in the box to a piece of paper and store it in a safe location next time. Especially with that amount of money on the line.
As far as support i'd start my road to recovery here
I've had a lot of luck using RecoverMyFiles. Basically you select a drive and it will copy everything humanly (or technologically) possible off of the drive and save it where ever you want. If the HDD is failing the files you recover may not be intact, and it can sometimes take a long time (I've had it take up to 2 days) to complete, but its a very good tool imo.
You can try TestDisk and see if that would helps you fix the problem external hard drive. I've heard that you may need little advanced programs to get your files back if the free tools weren't able to address the problem. You can try Stellar Data Recovery or Recover My Files and see if any of them would helps you.
Good luck!!
It's been a while. I remember one paid software that recovered pictures free from SD cards. Also, RecoverMyFiles has a free version, but I haven't looked at it lately. I think the free version will show you the files that it can recover (even show the images)and then you may have to pay to recover them. (You can always screen-grab the images and at least you see if the data is recoverable or not). http://www.recovermyfiles.com/
Like anything, do a Google search and then check out the reviews.
Don't reformat. You'll have to get software like this to get your data back.
Also, you were trying to install Windows 7 on 5GB? You need at least 16GB for it as far as I know.
Personally I'd just plugged it into EnCase at work and pull everything back but as this is probably home-user based question, I have previously used this with great (read 100%) success. Just don't install it to the USB drive you are trying to recover :-p

Software may be available on some kind of torrent-site type thing should you desire a full version ;)
I have purchased both GetMyData's RecoverMyFiles and Easus Data Recovery Wizard.
Of the two, Recovermyfiles is crap! It took hours to scan my accidentally quick formatted hard drive and could not recover files that were not standard format files (jpeg, mp3, doc, txt, all the stuff a normal computer might have). Even then it was unable to recover any working files. When I recovered my files with the other program GetMyData refused to refund the purchase amount.
But Data Recovery Wizard worked brilliantly. It could quickscan for headers and easily recovered every file type. It worked easily the first time. I had my files back within 20 minutes of purchasing the program.
I recently lost 1000's of RAW files in one go on a portable hard drive, I went to http://www.recovermyfiles.com/ where you can download the software let it search and only pay for the product if it is able to find your files. It worked really well for me.
Good luck...
I recently lost 2 years worth of RAW images on a portable hard drive (shot throughout the USA, something to do with their transport to UK wiped it) I was devastated and sought help from the web at http://www.recovermyfiles.com/ it worked perfectly and recovered about 98% of the lost files. It will show you the files it can recover before you have to pay, its an excellent piece of software.
I have used this program on a number of flash cards and hard drives with good results: http://www.recovermyfiles.com/
It has a trial version that will show you what can be recovered before committing money to the full version.
Good luck!
