Check out Moonlight which is based on NVIDIA's GameStream technology, but is open source and completely free. Also compatible with Android.
> Requires NVIDIA GTX 600 series or later.
> Requires an iOS device running iOS 8.0 or later.
For it to work over the internet you need to forward the correct ports on your router and know the correct IP the connection you are streaming from. Setup guide here which lists which ports needs forwarded.
A paid alternative is Splashtop which requires a subscription, though I have no idea how good it is over the internet. It should be easier to set up with just logging into your account on both devices. It's free to use over WiFi which is what I use it for.
Splashtop Personal https://www.splashtop.com/personal is free for non-commercial use over local network. And they claim that it is capable of 4K streaming at 40fps, so fairly comfortable gaming may be possible.
Splashtop Personal, no need to remember any ip/dyndns or port forward. Does high FPS with audio too which VNC doesn't do. It's very very cheap too if you use their website to subscribe rather than the app store (US$16.99/year)
If you can afford a cheaper laptop, then you can just use splashtop to play your game on it. My laptop sucks and I couldn't install any games on it natively, but I can use Splashtop to stream and play my games from my desktop.
Use Splashtop Personal or Parsec in desktop mode, or instead of launching the app itself from remotr or steam in-home streaming, launch something like explorer.exe and then minimize that and do the work you need to do. You'll have control of everything, but remotr won't close BDO when you leave.
Splashtop has a very high frame rate and is definitely usable for what you are talking about. If you get the personal version and then buy the "Access Anywhere" pack (its $17 for a year), you can access your computer over data from any network. The free edition allows remote access if the two systems are on the same network. Note that there is a mouse control issue when playing games, apparently stemming from the software emulating a touch pad as opposed to mirroring your mouse input. But they recently launched a patch to fix this found here.
I have the Business version through my work, and the framerate and quality of the video is fantastic. The sound comes across really well too, but naturally there is some input lag. Not that big of a deal in a game like WoW though.
We've had good success with Splashtop. It's even able to stream video, especially over internal networks.
The downside is we think they charge a nominal fee for the iPhone/iPad app (not sure about Android).
Yeah, Splashtop Personal; I've used it for a few years and haven't bought it. I'm pretty sure the paid version was only if you wanted connectivity from outside of your home, via the Internet.
I've heard these guys focus on low-latency, but I think they charge for some of the features. $16.99/yr for the productivity pack gaming features. Free to try though.
